Best

Exquisite, original, complex yet not-too-complex Italian that pleases all the senses and finds undiscovered ones to seduce. The Cappuccino of Chestnuts, Wild Pheasant, and Chanter...

Worst

The only thing Italian about this restaurant is the name ""fiamma"" or flame. The wine list is large but ridiculously overpriced, and just because truffles are an Italian delicac...

Almost perfect! 7/18/2007

I took a good friend here for his birthday. When i confirmed the reservation, the guy I spoke with was very friendly and assured me they would do a little desert birthday surprise for my friend. I even called and reminded them again, and they said they would make sure there was a note of it and the waiter would bring out something for his birthday for desert. The place beautiful, loved it. Everyone from the host to the waiter, bartender, etc, was very friendly and attentive. We did have to wait about 25 min, even with a reservation, but no problem with the cute lounge they have.\r The meal was delicious. Mozz., tom, basil app was fabulous, pasta with shrimp and lobster was great (a little too al dente for me, but still yummy) and the sea bass and steaks dishes were delicious, well prepared, and good sizes. THey even give you a little box of chocolate after dinner. EXCEPT, after all that reminding and assurance, no one did anything for my friend's birthday :( I was dissappointed at this, but all in all, an great experience and I would love to return. Pros: Delicious food, wonderful staff, great looking place, chocolates :) Cons: false promises re: birthday desert :( little pricey.., wait with reserv's more

Where's the fire? SLOW DOWN!!! (Rating: 1.5) 6/16/2007

Perhaps it was the location of our table, but the entire experience was a circus. \r \r On three separate occasions, waiters (who seemed like harried bus-boys), dropped trays of food on the dining floor. Were they so behind on orders (we did wait a LONG time for dinner) that they needed to sprint? Sitting in the aisle, I was constantly jostled by their staff as they flew by. And, the wine pour station was literally at our table...that's silly. \r \r The lamb was decent, but our black bass cold. Definitely not worth the prices. And all very salty. \r \r To punctuate the end of an awful night, they spilled the ""complimentary"" desert accents (yes, everyone gets them...). We paid the bill while watching pools of sorbet shakes congeal on our white table.\r \r Stick to Blue Water Grill if you are looking for a BR Guest locale. Otherwise, plenty other 5-stars in NYC to choose from. Pros: Nice decor, and a good bartender on the first floor Cons: Everything else more

Excellent food and service. 4/22/2007

We walked in for a very late lunch fearing that we'd be rushed out. (Nothing could be further from the truth.) The staff was amazing. They went above and beyond the call of duty to make us feel relaxed and pampered. The hostess even gave us her card, so we could get reservations at another restaurant. The food was just as outstanding as the service. The presentation and combination of flavors were amazing. Don't skip dessert! We honestly loved every course of the meal. This is a restaurant we will keep on our short list in NY. Pros: Food and Service Cons: Make sure you know the address. We almost missed it. more

The garganelli is to die for! 4/12/2007

I was taken to this restaurant for the first time on Valentine's Day and I still have cravings for the garganelli! It was cooked to perfection and the portion, albeit smaller than what I was used to, was actually perfect and I finished the entire plate. My date ordered the taglioni and he thought it was absolutely delicious. We also ordered the octopus appetizer (polipo) and thought it was disgusting. I couldn't even finish one bite. The capezano (scallops), on the other hand, were quite good. There were two things I didn't like about the restaurant: 1- we were seated VERY closely to another couple. So much so that I could hear every word of their conversation! We were sitting so close I felt like they were part of our table. Even to get to my seat, the hostess had to move the table aside so I could squeeze through and then moved it back. 2 - The coat check was in complete chaos. Apparently, all the coats are taken to the second floor and since we were dining on the first floor, we had to stand around the cramped entry space while a woman went upstairs to look for our coats! That whole front area was crowded full of people waiting for theirs. There was so little room that we were forced to stand on the stairs, which didn't help much with the stream of people coming DOWN the stairs. However, the coat check woman was quite apologetic about it, and she even helped me into my coat instead of simply handing it to me. Also, our waiter at dinner was a bit curt, not very friendly at all. But the restaurant definitely made up for it with complimentary petit fours and a small gift bags of chocolate! Would definitely go back just for the garganelli! Pros: Perfectly cooked pasta, nice ambience, friendly hostess/coat check person Cons: Tables were too closely packed in, coat check was in complete disarray more

Big RIP OFF 3/26/2007

At first it looks like a really wonderful place. The staff couldnt be any nicer as long as you keep ordering $18.00 wines by the glass. This is obscene. You are not told that the wine is 18.00 per glass. The bread is lousy which should be an indication right there about whats to come. Then they put down some lame cannelini bean dip on your table, which is gratis but is lackluster and bland. The appetizers were horrific and the entrees were even worse. The lamb was fatty and there was hardly any meat on the bone. The salad was small and didnt even have a single tomato in it. The desserts were not good . When we stopped ordering wine , then the waitress Ilona A. stopped coming to our table. She was so nice at the beginning and then once we ceased from ordering the overpriced libations she could care less about us. I really would stay away from this place. One can find a really good Italian dinner anywhere else in Manhattan. This is not Italian food and whatever it is , the quality is substandard with huge price-tags which are totally unwarranted. Cons: Many more

Everything great except the food 3/9/2007

Just returned from a dinner there with my girlfriend. The building is impressive, the ambiance and service is great... but I came to enjoy delicious food, and that was missing. Very average pasta and a dessert that just lacked spark. Nothing terrible, but not a place I would return to, especially not with these prices! Pros: Ambience, service Cons: Food, value more

rip off 2/5/2007

seriously why do people go back....the food is good at best ....the wine list marked up 8 to 900 percent...true diners should know this...save your money ...there are a few other great spots in the area to get top notch italian.. try Dani just north of spring on hudson...blows it away Pros: pastas are good Cons: wine list service the bill more

WAY overpriced 2/1/2007

I was thoroghly disappointed. A friend and I popped by to have a glass of wine at the bar, which was fine, but then we decided to split some pasta. It was cold and mediocre. Then came the bill -- over $90 for 4 glasses of wine and 1 pasta dish (amount included 20% tip - the bartender who served us was great).\r Pros: Friendly staff Cons: overpriced, food was WAY below average - sub par more

Treated Like Royalty 12/25/2006

I had a wonderful meal on Christmas Eve I doubt that I would go back as a regular diner. Working in the restaurant industry I was able to get 'hooked up"". Though the food was solid, nothing was spectuacular, and nothing that made me say ""WOW"". The standouts were definately the foie gras app with persimmon and cippolini onions. The rich foie with glazed persimmon was contrasted very well with crispy cipollini onions. The scallop, although cooked very well, was underseasoned and was served a bit too cold for my taste. The three of us diners shared three pasta courses. The standout was the garganelli. The pasta was, for my taste, very well cooked. A guest with me described it as ""buoyant"". It bounced back in your mouth as you chewed. The rich cream sauce was balanced my the salty prosciutto and gamey quail. The gnocchi was nice as well. Served with porcinis (a fave of mine) and braised oxtail, it seemed a bit salty and would have benefited from a bit more gremolata. The gnocchis themselves were very made, not gummy, and light. The black trumpet and artichoke risotto was mediocre. There was not a whole lot of love put into it. The flavor was lacking and it was not as creamy as risotto should be. We again shared two main courses of halibut and duck. The duck had a very nice duck-y flavor but for my taste was a bit overcooked. The garnish or swiss chard, chestnuts and pomegranete honey was very tastey, very wintery. The halibut was moist and flavorful but was perhaps cooked a bit too hard and the crust on the outside was almost tough. The cauliflower, porchinis and and sunchoke puree all worked very well together. We recieved four desserts which were all nice. The chocolate and marshmallow torte was very very rich. A chocolate lovers dream. The pear in puff pastry with cheesecake and pistachio was nice as well. I enjoyed myslef but if I had to pay full price, I may have been dissapointed, though a beautiful restaurant for a date. Pros: Beautiful restaurant, decent food, great ambience, solid service. Cons: A bit pricey for whats served, food on cold plates!, bathrooms downstairs. more

Horrible experience! 12/16/2006

I flew in for a special occassion, and the staff lost my reservation. I was left on a Saturday night with no where to go - there are plenty of good restaurants in NY that lack their arrogance and stupidity! I can't beleive they don't know how to make a reservation - especially when I gave my cell number and the name of the person whose birthday we were celebrating. Pros: Nothing Cons: Arrogant staff more

Hip AND delicious - great for a date or a group dinner. 12/10/2006

Great, hip atmosphere and absolutely amazing food. Appetizers are wonderful and inventive. I recommend the scallops for the entree and the 5-cheese plate for dessert. Cocktails and wine list are right up there - have a drink upstairs before dinner. Pros: Beautifully designed, excellent service and fabulous food Cons: Very popular, so it can be a wait w/out a reservation more

Great Pasta,Decent Service 11/25/2006

I'm not pleased to right this review. It's not that I had a bad meal, it's more that it was just good and this place used to be awesome. All our apps. were served cold and the flavors were not as bright and flavorful as they used to be. Sorry guys. Pros: Great Pastas, Cons: Appetizers were cold,Average service more

Awesome 11/20/2006

Magnificent food, great ambience. However, you do pay for it. Nevertheless, would come back in a heartbeat. more

depends on the night 10/30/2006

The first time I went to Fiamma for dinner, it was a fantastic experience. We did the tasting menu with the wine pairings, and our server was wonderful. She knew all about the food and wine, and made the experience really enjoyable. I went back last Friday with my boyfriend's parents. Major mistake. Our server could not even recommend a wine off the wine list, and told us that ""he only works there when he wants to because he's been with them for so long."" He could barely get the specials out of his mouth. Needless to say, at that point I should have asked for another server but my boyfriend didn't want me to look too ""New Yorker"" in front of his parents. We sent back the wine because it tasted like they'd literally watered it down and also had to send back the lamb, which we'd ordered medium-rare and was still cold inside. I will not go back. Too bad, because it was a great experience the first time! Pros: decor and scene factor Cons: service and price more

Damn good! 10/26/2006

This place is great but don't bother to go during Restaurant week. It's too crowded with people looking to nickel and dime there. You won't get the regular menu and it's just not the same when you are in/out of the place.\r \r If you are looking to wine/dine in a nice environment, then go here... It's fantastic. Pros: Awesome food, excellent desserts, romantic... Cons: Left the restaurant overly stuffed and extremely full... more

Not on Sunday night.... 7/9/2006

While the food is superb, and the service is top-notch, I feel that my dining experience here was not of the highest caliber because I dined here on a Sunday night. I surmise that the upstairs dining room was closed, so I did not get to ride on the glass elevator! The food was delicious, and the presentation was good as well. more

I loved this restaurant 5/1/2006

This is a must if you're looking for a classy restaurant. Two floors, beautiful ambience, great food. We chose to eat upstairs. There's a bar up there with a few tables where you can start off the evening, perhaps a bottle of wine that can be taken to the table. The service was great. Our waiter was very attentive, recommending dishes, describing them beautifully and then checking on us a few times to make sure we were happy, which we were. It wasn't cheap but it was worth it for a special evening with a special someone. Pros: Ambience, Food, Service more

Highly Recommended 4/7/2006

Fiamma's food, service and wine selection are all superb. I had the short rib and it was incredible. The Octopus appetizer was also delicous. Service at Fiamma is unparalleled. The waiters are knowledgeable, courteous and friendly. I highly recommend this restaurant. Just be prepared to pay, as the menu is a bit pricey. more

Superb food, ambience, & service 3/28/2006

Everything that Fiamma has served us has been simply excellent - the quality of the food is amazing, and the dishes are inventive. The ambience is nice -- cool lighting, well decorated. The service is perfect - the servers are very knowledgeable both about the food and their great wine list. Overall it's on the pricey side, but well worth it. Pros: Food, Decor, Service Cons: Limited menu more

divine food, but impatient, mean service 3/10/2006

My husband and I came here for a special occasion - our first wedding anniversary. This place really went over the top to make us feel unwelcome. First, I had called ahead to ask if we could bring a bit of cake since it was our anniversary and wanted to do the traditional thing. NO! the woman replied. So we showed up with our reservations and even though the place stayed pretty empty throughout the night, they seated us right next to the swinging kitchen doors. When my husband asked for some recommendations on wine, the sommelier got really smug and said something like ""well ALL of our wines are smooth."" He might as well have added a ""duh"" at the end of his sentence, he said it in such a rude way. So the food was truly divine, no complaints there, but it just wasn't worth enduring the service. Pros: good food Cons: stuffy service more
