I hadn't been to Las Vegas in many years but I was surprised when the Sahara Hotel showed up on most search engines as one of the least expensive hotels in Las Vegas. For many, many years... the Sahara was the IN hotel on the strip.
Upon arrival, it didn't take too long to realize why it cost so much less than the other properties. The exterior is still in splendid condition and reflects Las Vegas in its former glory days. The interior, however, is badly in need of a refurb.
The room carried a musty cigarette smoke-smell and there were numerous carpet burns. The bathtub drain was an all-day affair. The high-speed internet, although available, was grossly overpriced at $12 per day. Housekeeping was, at best, sporadic. One day the bedspread was left on the floor, one day no towels, one day the trash hadn't been dumped, etc. In addition, a room service breakfast tray was lieing outside the room across the hall the entire 9 days we were in the hotel.
The location, although on the strip, was just a little too far North of the rest of the properties to make walking between them possible. There is a monorail from the Sahara to the other properties but this can get a bit pricy, also.
The Casino was also badly in need of management. If you want a drink, just plan to walk to the bar. The waitresses, few and far between, almost seem to avoid actually taking drink orders. Security in the casino itself was so subtle I wasn't able to see any visable guards and the "patrons" wandering through the casino looked as though many of them might be actually living in the casino on a bench.
Speaking of casinos, the hotel has several towers of rooms and one of them has a guard at the elevator entrances checking room keys. I presume this is a security measure but was puzzled that it was only being practiced at one tower. I guess the other towers must be crime-free.
In general, if you are looking for a low-priced hotel in Las Vegas and on the strip, the Sahara works. Just don't expect too much when you arrive. A change of management (Hotel GM and Housekeeping) would definately be beneficial to this great hotel.
