Lowry's Books

One of my all-time favorite bookstores 8/16/2005

A vacation search led us to a cabin on the lakes of the tiny town of Constantine, Michigan. The best attractions we could find were all in nearby Three Rivers: a petting zoo, the state's possibly oldest covered bridge, and this local independent bookstore. Lowry's sprawls over about three storefronts and takes liberal advantage of its basement. There's one room devoted to new books; the other two, considerably larger, are all used or marked-down stock. When we visited, half the material was being moved around. Books, dozens of books, hundreds of books, _good_ books, the kind you've always been meaning to read, were piled in cardboard boxes and in huge stacks everywhere. All the best used books were marked down to $0.50-$3. I finally finished my Heinlein collection, picked up some obscure (but fantastic) fiction, and wound up with a backpack full of books. "Oh no," said Mom, "that's going to cost a fortune" - but it was less than $25. I love this place. The selection is excellent, the people are courteous (unobtrusive, mostly), and the prices are difficult to beat. If I ever find myself in this neck of Michigan again, I will go here and stock up. Plus there's a big cardboard box marked "free books" out front. (Don't get your hopes up - it's terrible stuff. But how thoughtful!) more
