I had the luck to be working in Birmingham back in the 1970's, and I ate at the social grill almost every day for a couple of weeks. When you drove by the place at 8 am, you would see crates of fresh vegetables stacked on the side walk being delivered.
When you got into the lunch line, there were about 6 black ladies behind the counter who would put giant spoonloads of fresh home cooking, loading up your plate with more than you could eat. It was all fresh, hot, and damn good. The price was very reasonable, too.
After all these decades, I still remember the Social as a very special place in its day.
