Boomerangs is an interesting twist on a thrift store concept. Located in JP Centre, Boomerangs is home to the castoff items of a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood as well as stock of items that didn't sell from select Metro Boston businesses.
If you live nearby you'll want to "pop-in" to Boomerangs as you pass by just to check out what is in stock at the moment. You'll find an extraordinarily eclectic collection of CD's, kitchenwares that range from dishes and glasses to crystal and appliances, a huge assortment of used clothes and lots and lots of books. Plus, you can even find furniture, though the furniture typically is quite used... you'll find some rare finds on good pieces on the rare occaision as I have.
All in all the staff is very helpful and frequent visits will result in great finds and astounding bargains. My most recent visit last week resulted in discovering margarita glasses from Pottery Barn that someone obviously had never used and decided to dispose of... at 75 cents a stem!

If you have an older bike, say a Raleigh or a Schwinn, and you're despairing that no one knows what to do with it anymore, take it to Ferris Wheels. They'll give it the love it deserves and they'll really understand its quirks and necessities. Sure, they're up on all the cutting edge biking stuff but you won't get lost in the 20-speed shuffle here. Trustworthy, kind and efficient, plus they employ kids training to be mechanics from Bikes Not Bombs.

More
Petal and Leaf is my favorite florist. It is quite pricey for a neighborhood florist, but nothing like Winston's or anything and from time to time you can find some great deals.
I have been buying flowers at Petal and Leaf since they opened a few years ago. I am always impressed with their excellent customer service. They offer help, but will never crowd you if you just feel like looking around. The staff is very knowledgeable and even if you go in with a vague idea of what you want, they will make up a gorgeous arrangement in a matter of minutes.
The thing that I love most about Petal and Leaf is that they go the extra mile with presentation. For example, they use nice greens (nicer than your average florist) to dress up bouquets and they always tie a nice fabric ribbon around your purchase. So even if you can't spend a lot on flowers, they are nicely dressed up and your purchase is sure to exude classiness.
Sometimes their selection is a bit thin, but most of the time they have lots of great stuff to choose from: cut flowers and potted plants, old standbys like roses and tulips plus more unusual flowers.

Looking for a gift for that hard-to-please woman? Fireopal in Jamaica Plain is a terrific option. Filled with a variety of unique jewelry pieces, home decor items, and art (I'm definitely leaving some items out because there are many), Fireopal is unique because the selection is largely created by independent artisans. Many of their items come in vibrant colors, great to spice up an outfit or even a room in your house. Their prices are fair considering that they don't sell a whole lot of mass-produced items. Fireopal has become a longtime favorite for JP shoppers!

If you are a chocoholic, these are your cookies! Not for the faint of heart (literally), they're very rich. They are baked with chunks of dried fruits, dark chocolate chunks and pecans and almonds. Not super-sweet, so you can taste all of the flavors. Cookies can be ordered from their website and they will deliver or ship. Not cheap, but yum!
Pros: The Double Chocolate Pecan Cookie
Cons: The Calories

Boing is the toy store to visit in JP! It is great fun, even if you don't have kids. They have a dizzying selection of toys, games, and fun stuff for all budgets. The staff is incredibly friendly, and always has great suggestions. They know their toys!
The store itself is just amazing. It's packed with toys, and everywhere you turn there is something new. There are a lot of quality toys here...not a lot of junky toys. There really is something for all price levels; you can spend $5 or $500.
It's a fun store to bring your kids, as they are very welcoming and have a lot of demo toys out. They area very patient and kind staff too! I love this store.

More
This is a fun place to browse. Not at all the breadth of a superstore bookstore, but what's fun is the selection. Emphasis on African-American lit. and on local authors. There are also numerous gift and home decorative items -- again, an emphasis on Pan-African arts and crafts. They sell some music, and some unexpected things. Near the bus stop -- why not stop in and check it out.
The only bookstore in this part of JP. Again, not the place to go to get the latest release or when you are in need of a particular title -- they may have it, but they are not guaranteed to. It's more a place to discover books you haven't known about, and also to browse around to look at interesting craft items.
