It seems that good times passed by for Zlata Praha. Place famous for its nostalgic decor and traditional food is definitely out of league they started. It screams for makeover and deodorizing. Food is inconsistent and stuff is clueless and mathematically challenged (but cooperative). Absurd is a word I have never used to describe a restaurant. This is the only word that embodies my experience at Zlata Praha. The delicious but slightly bland food, the adequate portions and the overtly old-school Czech atmosphere over emphasized for Americans first enchanted me. It was the service that left me jaded. \r When I came through the door, I told the waitress that I wanted the fruit dumplings. When it came time for dessert, I ordered. I waited 40 minutes with an empty water, before I was able to flag down the waitress. \r ?We don?t have any more,? she said, ?There are a lot of sad people.? \r When was she going to tell me?\r Then three by three the dumplings come marching out of the kitchen going to other tables. At least nine dumplings went to a table that came in after us. \r I was so livid that I just asked for my check. She tried to cheat us on the bill. It took four trips for her to recalculate the bill. \r My final bill was $11.90. I gave her a twenty, and she returned with change. She passive-aggressively gave me eight one dollar bills and ten one cent coins. For the first time, I tripped less than 15%. I gave her one of her cents back.\r My father warned me about Zlata Praha?s service, but I didn?t listen.\r ?The food is good, but the service is horrible,? he told me over the phone, before I went.\r About 15 years ago, he took my mother. The service was wretched, my father left 10%. The server chased my father and mother out of the restaurant and said that people tip 15% in New York. He asked my father for more money. \r ?You're right. Give me the five back,? my father said. \r The waiter returned the five to my father. My father put the five in his pocket.\r ?I don?t HAVE to give you anything!? he said. Then he and my mother walked off. Zlata Praha is a great place to fill up on all the great Czech beers that you can't find in the supermarket. If you like hearty food (and don't mind the cholesterol), you won't be disappointed - especially with a great selection of appetizers (try the sausages, salami, potato pancakes). The prices are more than reasonable (certainly by Manhattan standards) and if you go hungry, it's only because you shied away from the Czech traditional meals (you can always request extra dumplings). We've heard some good reviews of this place and decided to drop by on a Thursday night. The place was empty which we should have taken as a sign, but we decided to try it anyway. The food turned out to be bland and the dumplings were just horrible. Meat dishes had too much sauce. The only good thing about this place was availability of various Czech beers on tap. If we end up going there again, we'll stay at their bar for the beer and avoid the food. Pros: great ber selection Cons: bland food, slow service more

I'm not exactly sure how much food the previous reviewer needs to be satisfied but skimpy portions are not a complaint you'll have when you eat at this place. The decor is OK - clean and occasionally campy. The servers are casual but still quite attentive. The food is the real stand-out - plentiful and flavorful. My friend and I both took home enough food for one more meal. The prices are incredibly reasonable especially compared with Manhattan prices - complete dinners and beers for two came to about $45 with tax and tip. I was pleasantly surprised by the cucumber salad and the Szegedni goulash (is that the right spelling??) was fantastic. The beer is excellent (esp. for those who know that Coors is not really a beer). Food is good and the bar has this nice Cheers feeling about it. Make sure you check the outside seats in the courtyard - we liked them a lot. more

attitudinal waitresses. skimpy portions. outrageous prices. That's Zlaha Praha. It's a good thing they're the only Czech resto in town; if they were competing in a bigger league (i.e. Chinese or Italian) these guys would have gone out of business months ago. more

For pub grub it was very flavourful. The ham rolls with horseradish cream were nice - the potatoes cakes with ham and apple sauce were flavourful from the drippings they were cooked in. The duck was well prepared, the red cabbage sweet and the dumplings moist, light and airy - perfect for mopping up the sauce from the duck. Tried a pilsner on tap - I'm not a beer drinker anymore. No Moravin reds or white - but the Hungarian Bull's Blood was robust. Will go back this fall to try their Hungarian salamis and goulash.... more
