Sushi Bar without the Sushi (Lunch) 9/3/2006

My friend took me to this sushi place because she told me it was good. We came to the restaurant around lunch time. We were seated promptly and were given a menu. We sat at the bar because, in my opinion, it's the best way to see how well the sushi is made behind the bar where the chefs are. Glancing around, there wasn't anything special about the surroundings. You have your typical Japanese paintings, flowers, and lanterns. Even though I was planning to just eat from the sushi bar, I glanced at the menu to see what the restaurant had to offer. They had a variety of plates, soups, and dishes, but nothing out of the ordinary. What did catch my eye were the prices. They were above average prices for food that look pretty average. My best bet was probably because the restaurant was located near the AMC theater and near big businesses like Yahoo why they charged more. I ordered hot tea and an order of California Rolls (I wonder if I go to another state, would they still be called California rolls?). The bar has the typical stream of water with boats going around in circle endlessly with color plates to determine their value of sushi they carry. As I wait for my order, I notice something odd. There wasn't much sushi on the boats going around the bar. The chefs were in a frenzy trying to fulfill their orders that I guess they didn't have time to fill up the bar again. I pretty much had to order the sushi I wanted instead of waiting for it to pass me by on the boats, which pretty much defeats the purpose of sitting at the bar to begin with. The sushi they made for us was decent. The rice was moist and the salmon and tuna was satisfying. Other than that, there's nothing really special to report on the taste. All and all, it was an okay place for lunch, but I wouldn't really go back to it. The food, people, and atmosphere were typical, but the price was the big turn off for me. I know a better place for sushi that's cheaper and still delivers great taste. more

Yoyo Sushi Bar (lunch) 8/18/2005

Overall, the quality of the food was good. My client and I ordered noodle soup dishes along with a couple sushi plates. The noodle soup was good and the noodles were fresh and light. The soup camp burning hot. Nice touch as at least you can wait for the heat to dissipate vs. getting luke warm soup and having to woof it down before it goes cold. The spider roll I ordered was large and costly ($9). My client's sushi roll (forgot what it was, some sort unagi roll) was good and more moderately priced for the size. more
