Gombei is one of the few authentic, rustic Japanese restaurants in the area. My favorites are the flavorful stews and curries. They remind me of those country diners in out of the way towns like Ise coastal area in Japan I used to visit on business. They have many daily and seasonal specials on the chalkboard and are well worth trying.

Located in a small strip mall on Wolfe Rd, this small produce "stand" has lots of variety to satisfy most people. Their veggie selection is very good. Prices are at or below supermarket prices and are of good quality. One note is that the produce isn't the best looking (no shiny waxes or polish) but the quality is just as good and mostly better than the supermarket. As with all produce, do your research and be picky.

Bonfante Gardens is one of those attractions that combine a "low tech" city park with a hint of amusement park flair. The have lots of gardens with weird shaped trees as well as a few water rides (paddle boats, floats). They have a couple roller coasters (no upside down types) and a large greenhouse with butterflies and moths with tropical foliage. The nice thing they put in this year was the addition of a water attraction which they bill as Splash Garden. A welcome addition during the blazing summers in Gilroy. Definitely a low key "amusement park", best suited to younger families or those who just want to stroll and take in leisurely rides. One more cool thing: they have an arrangement with Great America where if you buy their VIP season pass, it includes admission (all season) to Bonfante.

We didn't want to mess with installing a new garage door or opener since we had an old house. We had a bumpout in our laundry room which prevented a roll up door from being installed. So they confirmed that it would be a tough install and recommended a "cheaper" solution by just installing a slower opening garage door opener. This was to make sure that the older wooden garage door would not be damaged if used with the newer, faster, high powered openers. It's worked well and their installation was very clean. No loose wires for the sensors or wall switch. Very happy with the opener and install. We probably could have found a better price somewhere else, but we got a better vibe from them vs. the others we talked with.

Finding a barber or hair cutter who knows how to cut Asian hair (coarse, fast growing) is hard to find. I've received many bad hair cuts from people who don't know how to deal with it. Normally, it gets cut too short in areas and it ends up sticking up. Heather does a great job in keeping my hair short but not short enough that it stands on end in areas. Her prices are very reasonable when compared to other salons. She does drop in work but I'd advise you to make an appointment as she's the owner and occasionally leaves early for the day (if not busy) or goes out of town on the weekends.

What an ordeal. We ordered a double three cushion recliner couch from Russell’s. The sales guy was really nice and was able to get us a fairly good deal on the couch, but not enough to compensate us for the hassle that ensued.
So 6 or so weeks go by and finally the couch comes in. My wife goes to pick it up in our Yukon (save $100 or so on delivery). It was covered in that heavy plastic and my wife did a quick look to see it's about the right size and right material. She gets it home, takes off the plastic and sees that it's a 2 cushion vs. the 3 cushion we ordered. So we called Russells the same day and asked if there was a mistake. They gave us the line, "you're responsible for checking BEFORE you leave the warehouse to make sure you got the right furniture" with attitude. My wife gave them an apology and asked what we should do next. They kept insisting it was our fault during the discussion about solutions and that was what got my wife mad. They ordered the wrong couch after reviewing the paperwork that came with the wrong couch. So we felt that since it was the majority of their fault by pawning off the wrong couch on us to at least order us the new couch, pick up the wrong one and deliver the new one w/o hassle or extra cost.
Nope they wouldn’t do it. They said that we’d need to pay for delivery and somehow get the couch back to them. In all this time, they kept complaining that they can’t do anything with the wrong couch (BS!) and that we’re responsible for it. To make a long post shorter, the only thing we could get would be to split the delivery cost and wait another 6-8 weeks for the couch we actually wanted. On top of that, they threatened us that the wrong couch better be in good shape or else you won’t get your new couch w/o having to pay for it. Fortunately, the couch came in and they took the wrong couch back. We were stuck (we gave away our old couch the day before the wrong couch arrived to Salvation Army) and we will NEVER shop at Russell’s again as well as spreading the lack of customer service word from their front office. If you do buy there, be 200% sure you get what you ordered and comment BEFORE you leave. If you find a scratch or something else wrong when you get home, you may be SOL.

This is one of those "low tech" type places to bring your kids. There's lots of play structures (ship, slide house, playgrounds, maze, etc.) for your energetic kids to let some steam off. Also there are a few low key rides if you get tired of running after the kids. It's also a nice place to pack in a lunch and eat on the grassy areas or near the petting zoo on picnic tables. Plan at least for a couple hours to enjoy it fully.

I've been going to Brian's for years now since I've moved to San Jose. Brian's shop offers lots of different comics as well as cards and figures. They also offer a subscription service where they pull your comics as they come every week by giving them a list of books. You can pick them up every week or even monthly. The best part is that they offer 10% off cover price even though you just walk off the street as well as a bag and board for each comic.

I've been in this shop a few times and they have a good of selection of comic related items. All of the current mainstream and a lot of not-so mainstream stuff. They also have action figures and other comic collectibles. Pricing seems to be reasonable, below guide and the staff is knowledgeable. They don't carry much of the older comics (pre 80s) would be my only issue.

We called this the "junkyard" of electronic supply stores. They have all sorts of old equipment and parts for sale and salvage. If you're at your last stand to find old parts, this is the place you'll find it if at all. We shop here regularly to find the odd part and pick up fairly inexpensive wire and connectors. It's just fun going down the aisles and finding some old scopes you used when you were in college.
