On Saturday Sept 22nd 2007, I visited the Yardhouse to have a few drinks and celebrate a friends birthday. During the course of the evening, apparently the management had some trouble with an Indian(east Indian) patron, and decided to cut him off from purchasing any more alcohol. However the punitive action didnt end there. The management also summarily cut off any person in the restaurant who was Indian or looked Indian from purchasing any alcohol. The rationale being that we would buy beer and pass it off to those who were cut off. I am an Indian and had no affiliation with the trouble makers, however because of my ethnic makeup, I was also denied service. My girlfriend who is caucausian however, was served freely and without hinderance. I dont believe the yardhouse condones this type of behaviour, however they have a terrible problem in their backyard, in the form of a manager who may have race issues. Upon talking to the staff, who were very apologetic, I came to find out that the majority of the staff despise the manager, and were in agreement with my assesment of the situation. If you are black, hispanic, asian, be warned, you may find a 60s era jim crow experience if you choose to patronize the Yardhouse in Long Beach.
