Favorite Italian 4/15/2008

Trattoria Marcella has great food, a nice atmosphere, and excellent service. It's a favorite place of mine to take out of town guests (even Europeans!). Pros: Great Food Cons: A little busy more

still the best Italian anywhere 5/8/2007

I travel all over the country and it is always a pleasure to come back to Trattoria Marcella .All the rave reviews have merit . Since 1995 these guys continue to please. more

Best Risotto in Town! 10/10/2006

I found out about this restaurant one night after house sitting and fell in love! The Seafood Risotto is their best feature, although it is pricey for STL Dining. I did later go with my family as a group with kids and they were very accommodating. If you don't feel like being waited on, you can always place your order to go! Pros: Risotto, Italian Food Cons: Pric, Parking more

My favorite restaurant in the WORLD! 10/6/2006

Steve and Jamie have kept their wonderful family-friendly place on the top of the St. Louis list of dining adventures since opening night over 11 years ago. Yes, some places are fancier, and many are more expensive, but if you want truly wonderful food, excellent service, and a great wine list, don't bother traveling around the world. Just go to Trattoria Marcella regularly. You won't get bored, just try one of the ever-changing array of specials based on Steve's creative imagination and Italian country experience. more

Second time back 12/18/2005

What a meal have been there twice so far and the food and service was great. I had the same server each time and his suggestions were right on. We had a fish special the last time ,simple preperation done perfectly and the stuffed artichoke was not to be missed both times . As far as Italian they are right on. Why try the new chains, so far Trattoria gives it at a better price and better food. How did I miss this place for so long? Pros: food, service, wine Cons: crowded more

Decent food but they expect a 30% tip 8/2/2005

Been to this restaurant 3 times. Food is decent, service is mediocre but yet their crew expect tips to be near 30%. This isn't a 5 star restaurant. Anyone that wants to burn money and show off to their date how much money they can throw away then go for it because I won't be going there anymore. BTW, I wouldn't even recommend this place for a date because the tables are so close together you can smell the perfume or cologne next to you! Pros: Food Cons: Service, Long wait for table, Expect big tip more

Best Italian in St. Louis 6/30/2005

Trattoria Marcella has quickly become my husband and my favorite restaurant. This is not any ordinary italian. This is old world style authentic italian, not the italian-american food you get on the hill. The menu has changed recently and it is even better than before. Try the new ziti, it is fabulous. Pros: reasonably priced more

Gone down 1/7/2005

This restaurant used to be the favorite for us but since expansion and menu change it is our feeling it no longer meets its reputation. In addition, the service during our last visit (which I admit was awhile ago now) was poor. more

City Hype 8/5/2004

Sometimes these reviews reflect a ""city bias"" and this one fits into that category. It's my job as a suburban snob to bring things into perspective. TM is a very good but not great restaurant. It's food is very innovative and the service is good, but can be a little too familiar. The menu is somewhat limited and perhaps a bit too ""light"" for more hearty eaters. This would be a great place to take a first date. The food is very tasty and well prepared, but it's not a top 10 nationally nor locally. My wife did enjoy it more than I did. Pros: Good food, friendly staff Cons: , menu is small more

Outstanding pasta, appetizers, and desserts. Impeccable service. Will create an individual dih to accomodate your tastes. Pros: Delicious dishes, outstanding service, creative more

Truly the BEST!!!! 2/27/2004

We have gone several times and look forward to the next time! Fantastic service and food. Risotto with lobster and shrimp was lacking shrimp this time, but taste was excellent! Recommend stuffed atichoke and calamari over fried spinach to start off! Even Calamari haters will want more. Pros: service, creative cuisine, the BEST in ST.L Cons: , must have reservation more

The Best in St. Louis 2/9/2004

This dining experience is not to be missed. Often, if a table is not available we will dine at the bar and have never had anything but a glorioous experience. This is one of the few restraurants in St. Louis where I do not know, when I sit down, what I will order. It is always a difficult decision, but a joyful one. Pros: Excellent Fare, Gracious Service, Joyous Customers more

A Must Visit 8/8/2003

Trattoria Marcella is hands down the best ""bang for the buck"" for a wide range of Italian dishes. However, one should note that TM's dishes don't fall into the St. Louis ""Spaghetti, Mostaccioli and other red sauce pasta dishes"" Italian style that many STL restaurants use. Instead, TM uses a wide range of fresh ingredients to create a diverse and wide ranging choice of dishes, with no main entree costing more than 15 - 18 dollars (specials can be more). The wine list is large, but not so large as to be imposing, and the range of wine prices go from the utterly affordable to the utterly frivolous. The service is wonderful - attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant is a bit small, so it's pretty intimate for all in the dining area. However, the close quarters doesn't take anything away from the experience. Pros: Inexpensive, Diverse dishes, great service Cons: parking can be hard more

restaurant 2/15/2003

one of my favorite places to go, but it was better before they expanded Pros: reasonably priced, casual dress, unique dishes Cons: crowded, loud, always booked more

High rating well earned 11/17/2002

We arrived at 5PM (opening time) on a Saturday without reservations and couldn't get a table. However, you can order at the bar, which we did. We ordered the fried spinach and calamari appetizer. A bed of fried spinach topped with fried calamari covered with shaved parmesan and asiago cheese. A lemon wedge on the side to drizzle on. Most excellent! The appetizer menu contained bruschetta, crostini, a cioppini-style dish, roasted mushrooms, a raw beef and arugula salad, and a couple of others. I ordered the chicken speidini. Breaded chicken medallions covered in a lemon garlic butter with capers, a bit of red onion and a few other things on top of a mound a mashed potatoes. Some excellent and amazingly thin asparagus on top. Wonderful! Bill was around $20 per person (without wine). I want to write a lot more but out of space. Pros: Wonderful food, Attentive service, Reasonable prices Cons: Limited parking, Smoking allowed more

Simply the best. 11/13/2002

Trattoria Marcella is just about everything an Italian restaurant should be. It maintains to keep the feel of a humble neighborhood eatery. But from the moment you walk in, you can tell these people take the food and dining experiences they sell very seriously. The food is, quite simply, second to none. I had the lasagne and my wife had the famous lobster risotto and they were both bursting with multi-layered flavor. We finished with some creme brule for dessert which was very good. The wine list is very good as well. The service is very attentive and professional. And the prices are very reasonable as compared to most upscale Italian eateries. Trattoria Marcella deserves the accolades it has received. I look very forward to my next visit and anybody visiting St. Louis should put in on their list. It just should not be missed. more

St. Louis Secret 10/26/2002

This is possibly the best Resturant in the St. Louis area. Difficult to get weekend reservations, suggest calling 3-4 weeks ahead, but is well worth it. During the summer the cold soups are outstanding. more

Maybe they had a bad night 9/17/2002

I went on my birthday and the Risotto tasted like rubber bands and my date's chicken cannelloni was extremely salty. There was a baby at the table next to us, which was about 16 inches away. The service and wait staff was exceptional, but they must have been training a new cook. Pros: Service, atmosphere Cons: Overated food, small dining area, tables too close more

Incredible 8/28/2002

So good words can't do it justice. Even the coffee is perfect -- exactly the right temp for consumption. more

Not the same old Italian food! 8/8/2002

Although you will rarely be able to dine here without a reservation, it's worth a little planning. The food is very well-prepared and not the same old Italian food covered with ""gravy"". Pros: Food quality, Knowledgeable waiters Cons: Small, Noisy, Expensive more
