Best Restaurant in Laguna Beach 5/9/2009

My husband and I went to dinner at Sorrento last night and Had THE BEST Dinner!! He had the Salmon and LOVED it. I had the Halibut which was also Fabulous. Our Server Rene was so attentive and went out of his way to serve us. ALso we went early and they have amazing Happy Hour prices. I will definatley be back soon!! Our meal was very resonable as well I noticed Monday night they offer half off entrees. We will be back for sure soon!! Also if you want something romantic ask to sit in a booth upsatirs. I never knew they had seating up stairs. It was very nice!! Pros: Servcie, Food, Atmosphere, Drinks more

Extremely Impressed 10/20/2008

A few years ago I dinned at Sorrento and left feeling content but not estatic about the place. I gave it a second chance this past weekend and was completely impressed with the restaurant, service, food and wine. The menu was different then I remember and for the better. I ordered a pork chop that was as big as my head and it was amazing. It had squash and this fig sauce on top that was so mouth watering. My date had the seabass which was just as great. I guess they got a new chef who has redone the menu and everything looks and smells divine. \r Also the wine list was very impressive. Lots of recognizable names, but lots of other boutique wines as well. The server recommened several wines by the glass to pair with our dinner and they were outstanding. Our server was also great; very professional, knowledgable and sincere. We sat upstairs so we could people watch (and check out what everyone else was ordering). \r I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. Great place to have dinner with a group of friends or have an intimate date. We will be back for sure. Pros: Amazing menu, great wine list Cons: Street parking more

Below Expectations 1/18/2008

For several years i had worked at a local establishment where we regularly recommended this restaurant to our guests (who were from out of town). I was dissapointed when i tried it myself with a date on Christmas Eve (2007). On a scale of 1-10, i would rate the atmosphere-6, food-5, and service-9...more detail below\r \r As stated in other reviews, part of the attraction is supposed to be the romantic ambiance. However, i was bothered at the noise factor, even though i reserved a more private seating upstairs. It's a bit distracting when having a conversation and not really romantic. Also, while the lighting is dim, as to be expected and preferred, the decor seems somewhat outdated or old fashion. Not really a modern feeling, atleast upstairs (to be fair).\r \r My date ordered the Filet mignon w/ shrimp, which i also sampled for myself. Even while being the most expensive meal on the menu, both the meat & shrimp, and even the mashed potatoes, were really quite bland. I had the BBQ glazed pork chop w/potatoes and, i hate to say it, but it just was not very good or tasty. Both plates included the meat (decent size) in the center of plate on top of 1 to 2 cups of mashed potatoes. It did look beautiful and all the choices sound great, but i would not recommend either dish due to lack of flavor or needing better preparation. By itself, i found the portion size of each dish to require an additional side order to really have a complete meal.\r \r The service from our waiter and the wine recommendation was the only postive i took away. I would have liked to have spoken to the manager but i did not want to make a scene in front of my guest which would have taken away from our special Christmas gift exchanging during the meal. Plus, how does one rescue a meal that we thought just tasted blah? Overall, with 1 appetizer, 2 drinks, and 2 plates, i spent about $140. I really think you can get higher quality food, and atmosphere, for the same amount of $$. more

The Mumford is Awsome! 8/21/2007

well aside from the fact that they were out of my first two choices of Wine the overall experience was great. Food was cooked to spec, apps were great, desert was skipable but not bad by any means. Highly recommend requested The Mumford as your waiter he's awsome! Ask to sit upstairs if you want some quiet but if you like noise and a scene downstairs is solid for that. WAY BETTER THAN ALOT OF OTHER ""FAMOUS"" RESTAURANTS IN LAGUNA. Prices are beyond fair, something for everyone (including an overly pickey annoying veggiegal like my sister). I have nothing really bad to say about the restaurant except that they were out of the two wines I wanted but in exchange they picked up 2 bottles of water, 1 desert and 1 app. PS - HOW IS THE PLACE RATED MY EXPENSIVE THAN FIVE FEET? SOMEONE CHECK THAT....dinner at Five Feet for 5 people was $425.00 (and we didn't have wine) while at Sorrento it was $275.00 (with a GOOD bottle) Pros: Food and Service Cons: Wine list needs to be updated!! <---it's like playin the lottery more
