Best

I enjoyed my dining experience there. I believe the food is excellent whether you are on a regular diet or...

Worst

Took forever to get food. But once arrived it was tasty.

Good Food 9/2/2010

I love the food at this place, I started off with hibachi entrees and one day i decided to try the sushi to see what it was like. From that moment on I was in love. I always get two orders, they are that good. I also bring my friends around all the time, after exams we would go get sushi and other things from the menu. We all love it. It really is one of the best Japanese restaurants I've been to. more

Love it love it love it. My new treat myself sushi place 6/25/2010

I walked in to the place expecting the worset since I read that June 10th review. But my sister told my to trust her the place is awesome. Pros: Rolled on the spot fresh sushi. Cons: I have a little stomach more

Excellent Sushi 6/18/2010

My daughter introduced me to this restaurant about a year ago and since the initial introduction we have been regulars. The sushi is delicious, reasonably priced and filling. The restaurant is convenient to the local grocer which makes it easy to order dinner and pick up a few last minutes items for the household. Pros: Location and price Cons: extended wait times more

Hairs in our food! Outrage! 6/10/2010

In both of our separate take out dishes, THERE WERE HAIRS FROM THE COOK! It made me lose my appetite and was completely unprofessional! They should at least wear hairnets to keep the strays at bay. We both ordered a simple hibachi chicken meal, but after a 40 min+ wait (FOR TAKEOUT), we finally got home to find that instead of CHICKEN they gave us STEAK, which I can't even eat! The air conditioning was obviously not on, even though it was a sweltering summer day, and the servers did not even apologize for the wait. They were distracted putting soggy watery veggies into our meals. The zucchini was wiggly and unappetizing. I DO NOT RECOMMEND and I am very angry at the whole experience. My stomach hurts now, because the food tasted so bad and because the sauce was so watered down. Cons: hairs in foods, soggy vegetables, wrong order, long wait more

Sushi Craving Satisfied 3/17/2010

Tanaka's Grill & Sushi under new management is a neighborhood gem! I love the convenience, timely service and most of all the :::fresh-quality-super reasonably priced-delish::: sushi. Its become a weekly treat :) The made to order appetizers and hibachi entrees look and smell tasty too. Keep up the great work & you'll have a loyal customer. Pros: Good fresh inexpensive sushi close to home Cons: Closed on Sundays more

New owners... and I love the new food! 2/8/2010

New owners... and I love the new food! I'd easily rate Tanaka's 4.5 out of 5 stars overall! Highly recommended! Here are my thoughts and experience details with Tanaka's: I live right near Tanaka's and tried it when they first opened a few years ago, under their old ownership... I was not happy. It wasn't so bad that it made me sick or anything, but it just did not have any flavor... at all. I would purposefully drive past it and go farther down the street to Toyama's, Sushi 101 or Ishi's (note: Toyama's was my favorite for Hibachi/Teriyaki meals and Sushi 101 was my favorite for affordable sushi? but now I get them both from Tanaka?s). Tanaka's has new owners now and they are doing it right, starting with the food. The restaurant is still pretty basic. I would not consider the atmosphere to be ""fine dining"" but the food is now amazing and the restaurant is always very clean. I would have no problem bringing a date or my family here. I've tried almost everything on the menu and have not had a bad meal yet. And everything is pretty affordable, even on the smallest budget. The hibachi/teriyaki meals are priced similarly to Toyama's and Ishi's, and based on the last time I went for Sushi, Tanaka's is slightly less expensive than Sushi 101. On a side note? I recommend trying the Hibachi Bowl. I have them add extra veggies and mushrooms, but it is probably my favorite thing on the menu. And when they say it can feed two, it really means it can feed two a few times. I normally split it into portions and get 4 meals out of it. Love it! If you are a fan of Toyama and Ishi's, you should love this place. I actually prefer Tanaka's teriyaki and hibachi meals over the others. I think this is because it comes out so fresh and you're not eating rice that was made that morning (or maybe a few days ago). Friends I've taken there also mentioned that the freshly made rice made a big difference in the taste of the meal. Though I'm not 100% sold that Tanaka's sauce is better than the others, it is equally as good. I did notice that you taste the mayo portion of the sauce more than the spice portion, but it was still very good. They sell their sauce by the bottle if you like it enough to take some home... I did. Their sushi is amazing, and I love that I can get a hibachi combo with a sushi roll on the side to snack on (one of my biggest beefs with Toyama's... no sushi). The ingredients taste fresh and full of flavor, and the chef can properly roll and plate the dish in case there are any guys out there trying to impress a date. Since I found out about the new owners I have been eating here at least once a week, and highly recommend it to anyone that likes GOOD affordable Japanese. It is great for lunch or dinner. Just make note that they are currently closed on Sundays (bummer for the lunch after church craving for sushi). The staff is always wonderful and polite. They are even willing to alter the menu items to accommodate your taste and healthiness options (something very important to me). After you order, you may not have your plate in front of you in under a minute like some other places, but when you get it you can taste that it was made fresh and just came off the grill. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Pros: Close to home and very good combos or sushi Cons: Closed on Sundays more

New Owners 1/3/2010

I have been going here for about 6 years and always thought it was one of the best kept secrets in Charlotte. It's been a while since I have visited, and was surprised when I saw new management. Pros: good tasting food Cons: New Management/Dirty Resturant/Employee's more

LOVE IT! 12/6/2009

Since Tanaka's has new ownership, the food quality is outstanding. The sushi is always fresh, the hibachi is great, and the prices are very reasonable. Its my favorite take out place in the HIghland Creek Area. Pros: Great Prices, Fast Service, and Great Quality of Food. more

Mediocre food .. Lousy Service 12/1/2009

I have been to this restaurant twice and both times I have waited 1 hour for them to prepare a take out order. The sushi chef was too busy talking to someone else to even bother preparing my order for the first 30 minutes. The price is adequete for the quality, but the cleanliness, wait time, and poor service far out weigh it. Stay away!! Cons: 1 hour preparation time for take out. more

Great Food at Great Prices 11/11/2009

Since changing ownership this place has really come together. The food is the same if not better than the ""sit down"" high dollar Japanese restaurants but for a fraction of the price. Their new Sushi chef is top notch always coming up with new rolls. They even have TVs now...making it a great place for lunch or to stop by and have a quick meal before heading home for the night. Pros: Best Sushi in Town more

awesome sushi on the cheap! 10/29/2009

The subtleties of flavor are amazing for such a humble place. This is one of my favorite new ""finds."" I tried this place awhile back & was not impressed, but I find all that has changed as of late....not sure if there is new management/chefs, or if they just got their act together, but this place has food that would normally be found in only the top-notch sushi places. The flavors are fresh & delicate, not heavy or cloying in any way. And the fact that it's cheap just adds to the draw! The only downside is how slow they are--I would go more often if I could count on faster service. The sampler platter is too huge even for 2 people, and all for less than $15!! Can't be beat! (and I'm a major foodie!) Pros: great food, kids menu (thank you!), good prices Cons: SLOW! ambience is just so-so. more

Good Sushi 10/23/2009

The food was great. I went with my wife and although there wasnt a lot of people there, I enjoyed the atmosphere and most of all the sushi. For the price I would choose their sushi over many known sushi places. Look forward to coming back. Pros: Sushi more

The best place to eat sushi 10/23/2009

I remember going to Tanaka before management and I liked it because of the price and sushi, but with the new management, I love it even more. The food is fresher, atmosphere is calmer and it is an all-around great place to come to. Highly recommended. Pros: Sushi Cons: There are none more

New Managment....Big Surprise....Great Foods!! 10/11/2009

Never thought a neighborhood's Japanese restaurant will provided the 5 stars services and foods .... Tanaka's Grill....They DID!! Pros: Best Sushi Ever!! more

Great Food and Customer Service ! 10/6/2009

Tanaka's is a great restaurant! The staff is very friendly, the food is excellent, the overall experience is great. Tanaka's is a place I like to take my friends too, everyone enjoys the food. The sushi is great, and the sushi chef is very personable and a true master at what he does. Pros: Best sushi in town! more

New Owner = New Direction 10/6/2009

Tanakas is a local delight! The new team in place is taking this small neighborhood spot in a whole new direction! The initial greeting from Rosario the waitress and cashier is always friendly! Then the chefs take over, Botz on Sushi and Javier on the Hibachi grill. The food is always served fresh and hot! Pros: Great Sushi and Hot Food Too!!! more

Great food at reasonable prices 10/6/2009

The employees at the establishment greeted me curtiously and helped me make a desicion on the food i wanted. The amount of food i recived for the price i paid was fantastic. Pros: Best noodles and chicken ive had more

Better then a restaurant 7/30/2009

Love the food and the quality. People are great and treat you like they have know you for years. The way customer service use to be when the guy behind the counter know your name. The place has more of a personal fell instead of a commercial vibe. Which adds the the enjoyment of the food. And b/c of that it has become a twice a week dinner place for me and my family. Pros: Best Sushi in all of Charlotte Cons: Haven't found one flaw yet. more

Tanaka's Sushi and Grill - Good food and good prices! 9/18/2008

I have lived in Highland Creek for 15 years and have seen this location be several different restaurants. When it because Tanaka's I was skeptical. However, after trying their sushi I was pleased. Since then I have picked up A LOT of sushi from there. They do have tables to eat-in as well. I have had their stir-fry and fried rice. I have never had a bad experience so I have to rate it 5 stars! Pros: Prices and food quality more

Residential Japanese-but delicious 5/21/2008

Like the other reviewer- this place is typically empty when I go. However, for the low prices, the food is great. The hibachi order to go are great as long as you get home within about 10 minutes. For people in the Highland Creek area- it's perfect. It is located in the Bi-Lo shopping center in Prosperity Church Road (off of DeArmon/Johston-Oehler Road Stop light). Pros: Fast, Cheap, Good food Cons: Doesn't appear to have a lot of business...but it may do well after work and on weekends more
