Wonderful pastries 3/23/2006

Some Crust Bakery has incredible pastries and other baked goods - a rarity in Southern California, as far as I'm concerned. It is a really cute little place, with a nice atmosphere, especially for Saturday morning breakfasts. I am particularly fond of their scones and tea at breakfast and their cookies any time. My husband thinks they have really good coffee as well. Prices are reasonable, and it is rarely crowded on weekday mornings although there may be a wait on weekends. more

Very nice people with very good baked items 8/21/2005

I used to shy away from bakeries that weren’t French or Asian, because those were the type that I had been accustomed to going to and always got good results from. However, the food that was available at Some Crust Bakery was amazing and I was very glad that I gave this place a shot. There was a wide variety of foods that I could purchase, and even on top of that, some of the people that helped make those foods let me in on some tips on improving my baking ability. It was very much appreciated! more

Oooooh so Yummy! 8/19/2005

Some Crust Bakery in Downtown Claremont is one of the best local hang outs we have. They not only have the best pastry in town but excellent coffee. You always see their cookies at the local school bake sales. I think there currant scones and bear claws are my favorite. They have recently added a tea room so if you can’t find a table on the sidewalk look inside. more

Fine baked goods & great coffee with a conscience 8/15/2005

Claremont's appealing little downtown strip is a delightful place to wander on a weekend morning or a weeknight, lined with restaurants that mostly prize comfortable standard dishes and a warm ambience. One place on Yale Ave. that transcends this formula by adding great baked goods & drinks is Some Crust. The croissants are among the best I've ever had in the US and the almond cookies have a delightfully complex, nutty flavor in the flour. Everything is always beyond fresh. I haven't had the pleasure of tasting their cakes yet, but they look stunning. If you want one for a special occasion, call well ahead to reserve - they often sell out. The coffee is delicious (and strong), and most or all is fair trade and organic, which means that you can sip and enjoy, happy in the knowledge that the farmers who grew it got a fair price and weren't subject to nasty pesticides. (Google "coffee fair trade poverty" and check www.organicconsumers.org/starbucks/ if you're wondering what I'm talking about.) The servers are always friendly and competent, despite the frequent crowds. And it's very kid-friendly, with a couple of small, colorful chairs at a little table, which our 2-year-old loves (high chairs available too). Any drawbacks? There's not much seating -- it would be great to have more outdoor seating in particular, but the layout of Yale Ave (and neighboring Harvard Ave) privileges parking over sidewalk seating, which to my mind is a shame. The baked goods are not cheap, although reasonable and no more expensive than Starbucks, and I think the coffee is a little cheaper (and did I mention more ethical?). And it's often crowded - it's no secret how great this place is! more

For a fulfilled life, come here for breakfast every day. 8/12/2005

This small cafe on the main street running through Claremont's downtown area is a great place to go if you want a rich cup o' joe and the lightest, flakiest, and most incredible pastries in the Inland Empire. Later in the day, make another trip to have one of their famous cookies--any flavor will do, though Peanut Butter is a well-loved favorite. If the cafe gets crowded, there is extra seating in the anteroom, where you can watch the people walk by as they go about their lives on the busy streets of Claremont. A very relaxing--and scrumptious--experience. more
