Great breakfast tacos, but get them to go and skip the rest of the menu. 12/1/2008

I'll have to strongly disagree with the reviewer who labeled El Chef "authentic". While I'm sure there are bland and cheap eateries in parts of Mexico, I don't think these qualities qualify an establishment as authentic. We live really close and I was hoping to find a new favorite, but all we found was weak salsa, horrible queso, generally bad food and worse atmosphere. Oh, I can't forget to mention that they charge extra for additional (beyond the first) bowls of chips and salsa. Really, just skip it. more

Authentic Mexican food! 3/28/2008

We moved to the neighborhood last year and have eaten at El Chef several times. We have never had a bad experience with the food or service, and prices are great too. I would recommend, if you really are in the mood for authentic mexican food, then El Chef is the place to go. Their cripy tacos are to die for! I have had crispy tacos at other places around town and these put all the others to shame. The cheese enchilada dinners are great also.... Oh the creamy cheese inside and sauce over the top of the enchiladas...humm... I think I have just gone to heaven. Do yourself a favor and give this little family owned business a try, I guarantee you will be back! Pros: Authentic all the way around Cons: none more

Great Mexican Food in Round Rock 12/21/2007

We live in The Woods subdivision off Sam Bass Road and this has become our favorite mex food place for take out. I work in downtown Austin and eat a LOT of mexican food at the places in the downtown, east austin and south austin areas. Some of my other favorites are El Borrego de Oro, Taqueria Jalisco and Arandas so my tastes are more authentic Mexican. This place doesn't disappoint. They use large slices of grilled vegetables, delicious sauces and give you generous portions. Highly recommended. Pros: Close to my home and great Mex food! Actually this place is on par with some of my farther away favs. Cons: Their hours are weird. Family run business so it doesn't surprise me. I don't really mind when the food is this great. more
