SHOULD BE ILLEGAL 11/13/2006

Mastros is too good, as the saying goes, "it should be illegal." Mastros brings it back to the oldschool. Great service, incredible food and an ambience that makes you feel like you are being taken good care of. Take a listen over at the piano for a taste of oldies but goodies, or venture out to the balcony for a fine Cuban. The food is excellent and the service is impeccable. Just make sure you that you have reservations, and even if you do, make sure that you're prepared for the bill. Ps. Mastros isn't for everyone, so if you're considering other options in the area, you can always downgrade to a suitable Ruth Chris nearby. super swanky steakhouse 11/12/2006

best steak, best martinis and festive atmoshpere. definitely recommend mastro's for a special occasion. totally worth the $$$$. i took my husband here for his 30th, and he was in heaven. it's an older crowd, but the upstairs bar area is lively and fun. our server was awesome - friendly... but not overbearing. everything we ordered was perfect - large portions so we brought home half our meal. Pros: ambience, food... drinks more

Best place to meet a sugar daddy... 11/11/2006

Come on ladies, now I know some of you are searching for a fun evening enjoying the company of an older man with a millionaire's bank account. Done deal. Enter the piano bar at Mastro's on a weekend night. Bottles and bucekts abound the bar where spirited gentlemen sip $100/shot scotch on the rocks. Fancy an appetizer? Feast like a queen on the jumbo shrimp cocktail on dry ice, more like a seafood cauldron than edible surf. Go easy on the dragon cocktail sauce unless you want to turn burn the hell out of your mouth. Let a 50-something sweep you off your feet and share a last dance, just like Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Of course, leave it at that, unless you want to wind up dating a grandpa - this I don't recommend. Pros: Service more

SADLY THE BEST... 11/10/2006

It's unfortunate that the very best Porterhouse I've found in LA is served by this kitchen. They take the very best piece of meat and ruin it ! All a great piece of meat needs is a little salt, pepper and charbroiling. These guys heap on the spices as if they were trying to dress mutton as lamb. They totally disrepect the meat. It's also sad when people pay about $100 per person and have to sit in the noisest and overcrowded restaurant this side of New York. My whole party complained that the have NEVER been to a louder restaurant. We asked the waiter if the volume of the music (yes they have music OVER the loud crowd) could be lowered. He replied that he gets asked that every night but the management just won't listen so he has stopped. So much for having a nice romantic, memorable evening. I had to shout my whole converstaion...and that was to the person just across the table from me! Otherwise the food here is very good. Dependable, uninspired, fairly bland but decent. The service is excellent however. It's also sad that people accept such conditions by wanting to be seen as "in'! If it's your desire to eat in the atmosphere of a dance club...then this is the place for you... especially the second floor. I woudn't be adverse to going again but I won't rush back. more

10 out of 10 every single time 11/10/2006

Mastro's continues to set the standard for all steakhouses in Los Angeles, which is no small feat considering it's fairly new on the scene compared to older staples like Arnie Morton's and Ruth's Chris; and now it appears Mastro's has spawned a swell of new takes on the traditional steakhouse experience (see Cut, The Lodge, you name it). If you love flawless service, classic decor, sumptuous food, and a lively atmosphere for a date, a business dinner, or a jovial night out with friends -- Mastro's delivers time and time again. Everything we've had on the menu is extraordinary. Always a spectacular experience. Pros: Excellent Food, Service, Ambience, Live Music, Everything Cons: Expensive, but you pay for what you get more

but sometimes, you really don't want to dress up or get packed into a dark place or have to raise your voice to speak to the person next to you. or, you just feel like being surrounded by people your own age. perhaps. perhaps. if so, this isn't the place. it's good overall. some would say great. top notch service. good meats on hot plates (order one below your desired pinkness. heh.) great sides. the piano man and the extensive bars with the private rooms score it a little higher, but yet, 9 is all this place gets because i didn't like the overall feel. the recommedations on the left are spot on; however, casual isn't regular casual. it's the business type. Pros: plenty of wines. get a room if you can. Cons: loud LOUD loud. it hurts my ears. more

NEVER AGAIN! 11/8/2006

Absolutely awful experience! Steaks were average and seafood tower sent two from our party home extremely ill. Contacted restaurant to advise of illnesses and underwent an extensive interview about our meal. We were then told the general manager would review report and contact us which he never did. We contacted Joe Mascaro, Gen Mgr, who was extremely rude in handling the matter and simply told us that the illness weren't caused by our dining experience! After spending over $400 on a dinner for four I was compelled to write this very honest review. STAY AWAY! more

Great steaks, sides, martinis and atmosphere! 11/5/2006

I always enjoy coming to Mastro's - recently I was there for a BDAY dinner and, although, service was a tad on the slow side that evening, the waitress was at least courteous and sweet. Our group had for appetizers: shrimp cocktail (jumbo, fresh and sweet), stuffed mushrooms (my fav of the bunch) and crabcakes (ok, not great). We each had our own tender yummy steaks (i'm on a diet so i got the petite filet, but for those who are not, splurge and get the filet or ribeye on the bone - an extra oomphf of flavor). And for sides, we shared creamed spinach (not a fan of creamed spinach), creamed corn (sweet, but a little too creamy for me), sauteed mushrooms (nicely flavored, with garlic and herbs) and mac & cheese (really yummy and cheezy, gorgonzola I think). Good food, good company - amusing / cheezy (in a good way) lounge singer - all in all, a great place for a dinner party with friends. For special occasions - consider the seafood tower (expensive but very impressive presentation with dry ice; and very fresh). Pros: Great food, martinis; lounge singer; fun crowd Cons: Service can be slow sometimes; Valet seems expensive for BH more

The Best Steak house in LA! 11/3/2006

This restaurant was one of the first fine dinning experiences I had when I moved to LA. And it's hard to match. This place has the best of everything. Even if you are not a meat eater, the fish there is just as good. The appetizers, the entrees, desserts, wine list....all top notch. I have never had bad service at this place. It's one of my favorite restaurants, and if I really want to empress someone, this is the place to take them. The downstairs is a bit more quiet, and intimate. Upstairs is where the party is. This place is set up so you can do some networking. Love it, Love it, Love it. more
