Nightmare night at Mastros City Hall !! 9/25/2011

We had our choice of 10 restaurants and since My wife had such an awesome time last time we dined at City Hall we brought our friends .We were seated way in the back of the restaurant in some overflow room to the SW of the main dining room . We were greeted by a waiter that was nice than a second waiter came took my wifes wine order and 20 minutes later I had to ask where the 15 dollar a glass wine was ..he apologized and finally served her . we had to ask numerous times for water and our dirty plates sat for 20 minutes before our desserts arrived. To top of the evening they had a private party just on the other side of a partition next to our table that was more like a bachelors party which got so loud at time we couldn;t even have a converstion at our table ..Very VERY rude and the management should of addressed the out of control patrons . All the people eating in our REMOTE section left within 20 minutes of the Wild party getting underway.. VERY DISSAPPOINTED !!! won't be going back ! more

First less than Excellent Experence 12/16/2008

This evening was my forth Dinner @ Mastor's City Hall Steakhouse over the past two years. I travel every week out of the Dallas area and entertain several times on every trip. This was my first dinner at Mastor's that was less than excellent. Their staff is very good and attentive unfortunately the Signature ?Bone in Filet? was not up to par; I hope this evenings dinner was an aberration and not a trend. Pros: Excellent Service Cons: Concerned about a downward trend more

Excellent food and atmosphere but beware of upselling!! 12/1/2008

The Good:\r \r I made the reservation several days in advance. Someone from the restaurant staff called me to confirm the day of and a couple of days after to make sure everything went very well. It was a nice touch. The building is fantastic. It is dimly lit and there is a candle at each table. The decorations, live music and upscale feel of the restaurant allow a unique dining experience. We sat near the back where the entrance to the kitchen is. The tables in this area are, in my opinion, too close together for real private conversation but it didn't bother me. The servers were quick to greet us and cater to our needs. The food tasted great and the portions were large. The staff made sure we had everything we needed.\r \r The Bad:\r \r We ordered a bottle of wine that we recognized was from a little known winery back home (and reasonably priced at $35 per bottle). Instead of bringing the bottle immediately to her thirsty guests, the waitress came back with a single glass of something else and proceeded to try to change our minds to order the wine she suggested. (Now when we were trying to decide earlier, she didn't have any real suggestions) Noticing she did not mention the cost of this alternative wine, I could only guess it was an arm and a leg so I respectfully declined. The stunt had me a little uncomfortable and almost made me ask for the manager. I restrained myself. The issue is: we are there to enjoy ourselves. Not to feel like dodging door-to-door salespeople. They did ask me what kind of water I wanted and from the previous review I knew to ask for tap water. Lastly, they did something every restaurant does: they brought the check when they ""thought"" we were done and then disappeared. I was ready for another bottle of wine, so much for that. In other countries, bringing the check without the guest asking for it is an absolute insult. Then she took the check before we left. That's another no-no. I will probably go back but will have to set some rules. Pros: Valet Parking Cons: upselling more

NO LONGER GOOD QUALITY 9/9/2008

I used to love this place, but ever since last January, the quality of the meat is inconsistent. Inconsistency, in a supposed top-end steakhouse is unacceptable. I used to eat there once a month until January of this year. I have always tipped well and the service has been exceptional until 2008. Mastro's (Owner of the original Cityhall) has sold the corporation last year and it has not been the same since. I would not waste my time paying for supposed top quality steak that is inconsistent. I have never had a problem with Cityhall until January of this year and I have been there over a dozen times. I won't be going back, and will not reccomend this place to anyone. Pros: Nice Design Cons: Steak is INCONSISTENT in Quality more

High pressured sales at it's finest 12/27/2007

I guess it is not enough that your dinner for ten will require a second morgage, but the waiters still want more from you.\r From the moment we walked in the hostess implored us several times to go the bar and order drinks while they were getting our table ready. It was almost like she insisted that we order drinks while we waited! \r The steaks are excellent, the ambieance is swanky, but the waiters (and hostess) must go to the best used car salesman school in the country! \r If you order one of something, they reccomend two, (which will be sent home with you a in a box) if you order a drink, they assume it is top shelf. \r They push this grain fed bone in steak on you like there will be cash and prizes awaiting them in the kitchen when they return. \r BE VERY CAREFUL when you order the seafood tower, did you know that appetizer can run up to $160.00 per person (the waiter determines what you get ) The waiter hits the jackpot and you have to go and sell your first born child on the black market. \r They automatically serve and charge you for sparkling water unless you request ""regular"" water.\r They of course will refresh your water glasses with as much sparkling water as they can pour if you don't say something. They charge $7.50 per bottle of sparkling water!!! I guess I can see why they do it. \r I notice the high pressure sales more when you take a large party there. My guess is that they know people won't question the bill in front of clients or co workers.\r My husband took some of his clients there last week. All of these events happened to him.\r If you want to spend a fortune and fell like you have been cheated all at the same time you will love this place!\r I would not take a large party here ever again.\r Be careful! Don't be afraid to say something to them or else they are going to be laughing at you all the way to the bank! Pros: live music is nice, valet parking Cons: over priced drinks and food & high pressured sales more

By Far the Best Entertainment in Town!!! 6/25/2007

People, People, People!! I have read all of the reviews and not one comment about the ""Lovely and Talented Miss Dianne Lindsay (band). Yes, I do agree that the food IS something to talk about. But, let us all agree, if the entertainment was terrible, would you go back after spending your paycheck on dinner? You would not be able to enjoy your meal if the ""background"" music was ""upsetting""! Dianne and her band, Pat and Joe, are a large part of the pie for Drinkwater's being such a big success!! Keep up the great entertainment and the delicious meals! I certainly will be back. more

One of the best steaks anywhere, great bar also 4/30/2007

The best of the three Mastro's restaurants 1/28/2007

We LOVE Drinkwater's City Hall! Now granted, we can get the very same seafood tower with stone crab, king crab, and shrimp at Mastro's or Ocean Club, along with the bone-in filets we always order. However, Drinkwater's City Hall is far, far classier than the other two restaurants. It's quiet, romantic, and the clientele tends more toward the wealthy Arcadia crowd than the phony Scottsdale crowd, meaning most of the men are in suits and ties and the overall atmosphere is very nice. Mastro's and Ocean Club, due to their locations, are unfortunately overrun by north Scottsdale's typical low-class and rude Tommy Bahama crowd. Drinkwater's, on the other hand, is pure class (this certainly is helped by the fact that both the Phoenician and Royal Palms' concierges recommend this restaurant to their affluent guests.)\r \r There's another huge reason we prefer Drinkwater's over the other two, and that's the amazing king crab gnocci side. It's just unbelievable! Delicious, melt-in-your-mouth, cheesy gnocci loaded with prime king crab meat. There's nothing like it - the lobster mashed potatoes that all three locations offer doesn't even begin to compare, so don't miss out on this side! The perfect evening: A romantic dinner at Drinkwater's in our best clothes, complete with seafood tower, steaks, and the crab gnocci. Perfect! Pros: Classier clientle than the typical Scottsdale crowd, best steaks in the world Cons: None - many people would say price, but it's worth every penny and then some more

Best Steakhouse in town, service not so top notch 1/22/2007

My boyfriend dine at City Hall Regularly. We often bring out out of town guests and his business accociates. The food is out of this world! Every appetizer, salad, entree, side, and desert I have had have been exceptional! The bone-in filet is unlike anything you will ever experience on this earth! I have also been unable to find it at any other steakhouse in the area. The lobster mashed potatoes are also a must try. The ambiance is great and the wine list and drinks are as well. The bar has a great, up-beat vibe with live music. The only downside is the service, one female server in particular. We have had her twice not and both times she was rude, slow and messed up our order...big time. But what can you do?? The food is just so good, all you can do is write a letter and hope that management will take action! Pros: Amazing food, ambiance, bar, crowd Cons: bad waitress more

Steak house worth trying 11/20/2006

Short and sweet... while the steaks and sides are well-prepared and truly unique and delicious, it's very pricey. The wait-staff is professional and exudes customer service. But, it's very pricey. more

Don't Miss the Bone-In Filet, Lobster Mashed Potatos, Gorgonzola mac'n cheese or the Seafood Tower! 11/10/2006

Traveling the world for business, I have had my share of fine dining and I can attest that Drinkwater is the best restaurant I have had the honor of dining at. The title of my post tells you my selections (I don't bother with the menu). When entertaining business associates from all over the world we always go to Drinkwater. Guests from Japan that have been advocates of Kobe beef being the best in the world, are always eager to ""get the best steak in the world"" when visiting Phoenix. For pure presentation awe, the seafood tower can't be beat. Your waiter can and will customize it for your discriminating tastes. Each and every waiter that I have had, (yes I do have a favorite) has been a true notch above their peers at other restaurants. There is one thing I have experienced at Emerils in Las Vegas that does stand above the waiters here....at a dinner for 8, each plate for each course was put on the table at the exact same instant. That one detail notwithstanding, Drinkwaters is what fine dining is all about. On any given night you are likely to see some local sports or entertainment personality feasting on the bounty at Drinkwater.\r \r I am writing the post from Shanghai China and have started craving Drinkwaters on my return to Phoenix next week......\r \r KEEP UP THE INCREDIBLE SERVICE!!!! Pros: The experience! more

Amazing Food, Great enviroment, crappy servers. 9/24/2006

City hall has by far the most amazing food and presentation of food. The enviroment is awesome. Unfortunetly if your looking for servers with any sort of personality or friendly helpful bartenders you are in the wrong place. After my third bad experience at city hall i decided its time to write. We started out at the bar and we had a brunette female bartender (avoid her) I believe she wears either two pigtails or ponytails.. she rolled her eyes when she took our order and it was even tough to just get her to greet us. Our server was mono-tone, every question we asked we got some generic basic answer. Not sure but when i go to a resturaunt and spend over $600 in food, i would really appreciate my server to be somewhat upbeat and helpful. The time before that we sat in the bar for drinks and starters...horrible service once again, the waitress sat up and seemed to be flirting with the floor manager, she forgot the bread twice and spilled our martini and turned around and charged us full price. For such good food it is a toss up for putting up with the service. Hate to say it, but someone should. Pros: food. Cons: service. more

Excellent! 2/15/2006

Drinkwater's has consistency!! It is the best steakhouse in the valley. If you are debating between which steakhouse to dine at, you must choose Drinkwater's. You will not be dissapointed. The seafood is also a succulent alternative that should be included in the first course. For a side dish, do not pass up the gorgonzola mac' and cheese...it is so good! Pros: free valet, atmosphere, food more

I am familiar with every steakhouse in Arizona. Drinkwaters is by far one of the best. The other guy talking about Grass fed beef should go to a salad bar and stop complaining. Or get out of this amazing STEAKHOUSE!! more

Amazing! 10/11/2005

This is by far my favorite steakhouse. I have been here on multiple occasions and was extememly impressed with the fantastic service, delicious food, and amazing ambience. The food has incredible flavor and the waiters are etremely professional and personable. I would highly recommend Drinkwaters for anyone who loves fine dining. Pros: Food, Ambience, Service more

The best steakhouse ever! 5/31/2005

We love this steakhouse that the Phoenician made us reservations for before we got married. Now we go there for all of our special occassions just because of the amazing atmosphere, food, and service! Pros: Wonderful food, Wonderful service, Beautiful atmosphere Cons: expensive more

Being from Texas, I know steak....... 5/9/2005

My husband and I travel quite a bit back and forth from Houston to Scottsdale. This is a great restaurant. The Mambo Caesar Salad has just the right amount of wasabi to warm the palate. The filet is always cooked to perfection. I love the ambience on the patio with the roaring fireplace and palm trees with their twinkling lights. The service is always impeccable. We will continue to return over and over again! more

Good for business dinners 3/7/2005

This is a great place to take clients or business associates, but it did not make us want to come back. The reason is stylistic; the steaks are corn fed and cooked in a very hot oven (and come out on a very hot plate). We prefer grass fed grilled steaks. That being said, if I had a business dinner where I needed to impress some clients, this is exactly where I would take them. The wine list was chosen for ""impact"", there were many designer reds from big wineries, but it lacked character. The creamed corn was very good, and the wasabi caesar had a great balance of spice. The service was also attentive and professional. Overall it was not for us, but it could be for you. Pros: decor, business dinners Cons: beef not grilled more

The Best Steak in town 7/24/2004

City Hall consistently provides the best steak in town. I spend a great deal of time in Las Vegas as well as Phoenix and none of the high end steak chains can even come close, Ruth's, Morton's, Smith & Wollensky's, Gallaghers and Flemings all come up short. Everyone I've taken to City Hall have all said that if was the best steak they have ever had. Please don't ever change a thing. more

Over all Dinner 5/12/2004

My husband and I travel to Scottsdale at least twice a year and this was our first visit to the Drinkwater. As much as we travel it was a pleasure to have a dinner that was hot for the entire meal. Also, the food was just fantastic. We will be visiting the Drinkwater on every visit. Pros: Excellent food, Excellent service, Wonderful atmosphere more
