Worst

It?s sad that I have to write this. This used to be one of my favorite places to get pastrami. However I think they have forgotten how to make it and how to be friendly to their c...

superb 1/16/2006

The pastrami dip literally melts in your mouth. Although the restaurant gives a hole-in-the-wall feel, everytime I've been there, the restaurant is packed. If you order out, they pack your food really nicely. They also pack delicious pickles and jalapenos. It's not exactly the healthiest place to go to but you won't be disappointed if you go there. Pros: food, to-go service Cons: parking, crowded more

Good enough for what it is 1/2/2006

Johnnie's is very good but not great. Don't get me wrong, I am very fond of the pastrami sandwiches there, and also think the hot dogs and burgers are great. However, it's pricey compared to similar ""institutions"" like Tommy's, the Hat and Pink's, and the portions are nothing special. Unless you think a regular Whopper is an unimaginable amount of food you will not have to split a sandwich here. Overall definitely a cut above chain fast food places, not as good as real deli pastrami places like Langer's and Canter's, but well worth going to if you live on the Westside Pros: Tasty, retro feel Cons: Crowded, inconvenient more

Gotta Have It 7/10/2005

Johnnies meat is fatty and a bit chewy, but the flavor and seasoning is unique. Combine that with the dip ( ask for extra or get some on the side) and their fresh baked soft french rolls and you have a one of a kind experience worth craving for. (For the record- Langers is THE Best Ever Pastrami- but the location is the worst!). Their corned beef is very lean but not quite as tasty with the spices missing. Also...dont overlook the hot dogs at Johnnies. They are big Vienna Beef guys and they do something kind of strange. They actually deep fry the hot dogs for about a minute , then they put them on the char broiler. Dont ask me why. They have a great ""cookout"" flavor bar none. Johnnies should be on everyones list of gotta try places. For most, you will be hooked. Pros: Food, Fast service, retro atmosphere Cons: waits at lunch more

2nd Generation Johnny's Fan 7/10/2005

My parents went on one of their first dates at Johnny's and 17 years ago I took my girlfirend (then to become wife) on our first date to Johnny's. It's the best food in the area. more

I wont be back 5/20/2005

If you want a plate of fat then eat there. There was some traces of meat in the Pastrami but mostly FAT. Just nasty, wtf!! Cons: nasty more

double dip!!! 1/28/2005

This sandwich is unreal,When you ask for your pastrami sandwich double dipped it will come to your table as a huge mouth watering delight. When you pick it up to take a bite you will notice that the bread of your sandwich is sponged wet from the juice of the pastrami.the pastrami sandwich is so big that my husband and i share one with a side order of chili fries. When you first seat they bring you pickles that are to die for.The place is small and you feel like your in a past era. Each table has its own mini jukebox.I love this place. I dont care what others say,I know you wont find another pastrami this way again. more

Former Vegetarian Dives In 11/5/2004

I was a vegetarian for 17 years and when I began to eat meat again, I never thought I'd see the day that I'd stoop to eating a hot dog--given their dubious reputation even among avid carnivores. So it is with great relish (uh, sorry) that I type the words ""the best HOT DOG I've ever had in my life!"" Better than the Dodger Dogs, cause they are grilled to perfection. Mmmmm. more

Excellent chili-cheese fries 7/6/2004

The hamburgers, the pastrami, the French dip--they're all good, but give me the chili-cheese fries at Johnnie's. They may not be good for me, but they sure are good. I haven't found any I like as well. Pros: value, authentic atmosphere more

Awesome Pastrami 5/22/2004

I'm almost 40 and my parentswere eating at Johnnies when they were just kids. I have been eating at Johnnies as long as I can remember. The food is great. I moved to ATL in 1987 and have to make trips back as often as possible for a fix of Johnnies and Tito's(next door) We freeze Enough Patrami sandwiches to last. I wish I could find decent Pastrami in ATL. It would be alot cheaper than a plane ticket!!!!! Pros: Biggest Pastrami, Good Fries, Best pickles Cons: , Price has gone up, but that OK more

A Great Joint 1/4/2004

Places like Johnnie's are so rare nowadays. The foodie hot spots will come and go but Johnnie's will always be there for you. Many transplanted Angelenos I know make Johnnie's their first trip from the airport, even before visiting their moms! The pastrami as you would have guessed is good but the real gem here is their french dip. You will remember their pickles long after your meal, they are so good. Pros: French Dip, Pickles, Pastrami more

The BEST!! 8/15/2002

I have been eating at Johnnies since 1968 and have yet to find a better tasting pastrami sandwich than Johnnies ... The bread, the pickles, the service and the friendly people that work there ... You just can't beat it in all of Southern California more

heart attack on a french roll... 8/8/2002

This retro culver city joint hasn't changed much in the last 30 or so years, whether it's the tabeltop jukeboxes or the outdoor fireplaces they light up at night. Bottom line, this is a fab place for giant, tasty, but not-so lean pastrami dips, as well as a trip back in time. An LA landmark. more

WTF Charging for extra pickles on a Take Out Order what a RIPOFF 8/7/2002

I HAVE A 4 YEAR OLD REVIEW ALSO..I've been going to Johnnies for over 20 years. I tapered my visits when they started to charge for Extra pickles on Take Out orders. For the price on their Pastramies they should include a JAR of pickles. They were supposed to have a 50th I believe anniversary and ROLLBACK the prices LIKE CANTER'S Deli did on Fairfax but one of the principal owners fell ill. I'm sorry you got sick but THE reason your were around for this long is because of your CUSTOMERS. I thought it was selfish of them to cancel the Anniversary which also made me take another look at Johnnies. SOMEONE IS SELFISH AND GREEDY.They could still have their Customer appreciation but by the way things look when I go there they've lost quite a few customers. There use to be a choice between Johnnies Pastramis or Titos Tacos on the Corner of Washington and Sepulveda. AS you see Titos is the clear winner. 2 Pastramis,1 fry, 2 sodas $30.00 not including tip. For the price its close to a RIPOFF . DON'T EAT THEIR TACOS OR HOT DOGS YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED AND PROBABLY TICKED OFF WHEN YOU GET THE BILL FOR THAT GARBAGE. Pros: Landmark Survivor Cons: Expensive more
