Decent food - but pricey! 7/6/2008

The food is good. The portions are small so you will want to keep a menu at the table. On our last visit, the service was lacking. They were not attentive. I would understand if it was busy, but there were only 2 tables. My water was empty for about 15 minutes. The rice did not arrive with the meat (we ordered it in the beginning). It was tiring to remind them of basic things we needed for our meal (plates of our meat were forgotten, we did not have utensils, & asking to get our water refilled). It wasn't like this the other times, so I think we just got some crummy servers. Our meals usually average at $140-$150 (meat, shrimp, drinks, & rice). more

Best happy hour 6/12/2008

Love this place for happy hour. $2 draft beers and half off the specialty meat. WHat goes better with beer than salty grilled meat. more

THE WORST GYU KAKU EVEERRRRR 3/29/2008

THE WORST GYU KAKU EVEERRRRR...My Girlfriends and I are VERY frequent/regulars at the Gyu Kaku in Pasadena on Green st. but i came to this huntington branch for my friends birthday one night and wow...it honestly made me think twice about coming back to ANY Gyu Kaku period....First off..the atmosphere was awkward and too quiet. Secondly, the servers were terrible looking/sloppy and disrespectful. They accused our group (who ended up spending a thousand dollars there) that one of our friends vomitted on their front door just because we were the largest table to order drinks...impossible because none of us left the seat except for the bathroom and no one was sick...the server JACO SHOULD BE FIRED...VERY RUDE AND CONDESCENDING...GRADE: F Pros: You cook your OWN food so you kno the terrible servers arent helping the chefs Cons: Everything...Servers are disrespectful and boring. more

It's not Japanese! 3/27/2008

This place has the worst service ever. The food is mediocre, service is sooooo slow and I am offended they call it Japanese BBQ. The workers are not Japanese but non-asians would never know. The greeting in Japanese they give at the door doesn't even make sense!! The management is awful. If you are looking for a truly wonderful Japanese BBQ restaurant, go to Anjin in Costa Mesa. Go early because there is always a minimum of a hour wait. The short rib soup is to die for, quality and marinate on the meat is A++ and the restaurant is actually Japanese owned (hard to find these days!). more

Worst quality meat I've ever seen at a ""Japanese"" BBQ 2/17/2008

I have been to Gyu-kaku in Japan and was expecting the same quality, but I was sadly mistaken. Compared to other Japanese BBQ in Orange County, Gyu-kaku was by far the worst. I will say that Gyu-kaku's atmosphere in Orange County is great- dark and intimate, but the dark lighting is just there to cover their old and browning meat. When I told the waiter the meat was brown, he said, ""that's the way some of them are."" And to add insult to injury, the sake over priced and small quantity (served in a shot glass). My advice to anyone thinking of going to Gyu-kaku in Huntington Beach for the first time, Don't. Why Waste your money and time when there are so many REAL Japanese BBQ places in Orange County: tsuruhashi, Hondaya/ Kappo Honda or Anjin. You may have to wait at this places, depending on the time and day of the week, but they well worth the wait to get in- prices are within reason and with any true Japanese Restaurant, you get quality!!!! more

Excellent 8/5/2007

I've only been once, but it was excellent. Another couple recommended the place to us, and they took us out there for dinner once. Pros: The food is amazing, great date atmosphere Cons: Expensive, and a little pretentious more

Great place! 7/17/2007

It was a lot of fun to cook the meats on the grill. more

I enjoyed it!! 6/27/2007

This place is so different. I enjoyed that fact that you can BBQ your own food and don't end up smelling. Great place to take out of towners new to this experience. more

amazing food that you will never get tired of! 2/8/2007

this place is nothing but good food and good people. i've gone a couple times, once on a date, once for a birthday and another time just because. every time i've gone in, my experience was nothing less than superb. the staff at gyu kaku seems so fun and they're always willing to help. the food is great! especially since you can mix and match the marinades, i never felt limited to a strict menu. the restaurant itself has got a modern ""asian"" inspired feel, and light house and techno songs play in the background to keep the atmosphere upbeat. you'll find a mix of young adults, families and even elderly couples. this place is great for dates and family and friend get togethers. its a must try! Pros: food is amazing and their happy hour is out of this world Cons: validated parking, but the structure behind it is free more

COOL 2/7/2007

First of all, the food is delicious. Besides that, the restaurant has a very nice ambience and is definitely a nice place to take a date on a friday or saturday night. Great selection of sake and Japanese beer. Servers are very friendly and helpful too. cool place, cool concept, GOOD FOOD. Pros: Food, Ambience, Service Cons: not open for lunch more

There's a party in my mouth 2/5/2007

Best food ever...... and the service is amazing. I've been twice his month and I want more more more more Pros: Ambience, Food Cons: Parking more

Not at the top of my list 2/3/2007

This restaurant seems to be for people who have never heard of grilling your own meat in front of you before. ""Normal"" bbq restaurants have portions that are actually fulfilling, not the dinky little dishes that come out at this restaurant. The taste is mediocre and the food is way overpriced. Do not go if you want to have a good dining experience. Cons: Overpriced, less than average food more

Great Experience, Amazing Food, Excellent Cust. Service. 2/3/2007

My first thought about this restaurant was, ""Why would I go out to dinner to cook my own food?!"" But this place is amazing. They have the best quality cuts of meats, fresh veggies, a huge list of premium sake and cocktails, and an amazing staff. Our server was very knowldgeable and helpful. They will give good recommendations and thoroughly explain the dishes and how to cook the meats. The meats come marinaded (my favorite is Basil and Miso) and in bite size pieces so that they cook fast on the grill. Definately try it out, they also have course menus for beginners. It comes with all the house favorites, try the Samuri!!! That's what we got and it was definately enough food for two. And cooking for yourself is the best part because you can cook everything to your liking. EAT HERE!!! Pros: Romantic, Fun, Fine-Casual Cons: Not good for children. more
