Lay Down and Feel the Ground Rumble 8/22/2005

Commercial jets pass over Gravelly Point Park as they make their way to the runway of Ronald Reagan National Airport. Right off the GW Parkway north of Old Town Alexandria, the park looks out over the Potomac River, the airport, and several of the downtown DC monuments. There is a boat launch here as well as a bike path and plenty of 'picnic space'. My favorite is walking a little bit up the bike path, and laying on the hill to wait for the large airliners to rumble past. There's a faint noise, too, you can hear in the air after the jets reverse their engines....you just have to go check it out! more

Keep Looking Up! 8/15/2005

Remember that scene from Wayne's World where Wayne and Garth sit on the hood of their car as a commercial airliner flies just over their heads? Recreate your own version of that scene at Gravelly Point, a public park off of the GW parkway on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. With plenty of parking, a nice breeze constantly blowing off the river, and easy access by bike path as well, it's the perfect place for a picnic lunch and a totally unique DC experience. more

Crowded, but a must-see 8/10/2005

Feet from the runways of National Airport, Gravelly Point offers a perfect vantage point of takeoffs and landings. Gravelly point offers plenty of open field to lie down and watch the planes, as well as picnic areas, boating, fishing, and athletic fields. Limited parking is available, so visitors may have to park on nearby grassy areas in order to visit this oft-crowded destination. Bring a blanket, as the grass is usually littered with trash. more

Great spot for watching planes 8/5/2005

Located at the north end of Washington Reagan National Airport's main runway (and along the Potomac River), Gravelly Point offers the best view of planes taking off and landing -- just a few feet over your head (think Wayne’s World!). It's perfect for a picnic lunch! Gravelly Point just off the GW Parkway, though be warned that parking can be tough on the weekends, and the park does close at dark. more
