If you're looking for something different to read, check out Food for Thought 10/13/2005

I usually only stop in when I need a textbook, but once I'm in the store I love looking around. For a small store they have a large selection of books, many by local authors. It's a co-op, so their prices are reasonable and their staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I love looking though the bargin books. I can't tell you how many I've gotten from there, and loved. Like much of Amherst, the store exhibits that laid back feeling that is common in most of downtown. Definitely worth a stop by. more

don't bend the pages 8/15/2005

a book collective in the amazing college town of Amherst, food for thought is a great place to catch up on the latest reads, or find something new at someone else's suggestion. I like to visit whenever I find myself falling into the trap of reading the same type of book over and over, and try to discover a new author or genre. more

When I think of this store, I think of smart counterculture folks plotting their revolutions. I think their best selection is in books about cultural issues and current politics, but they also sell 'zines and smaller magazines. They also have a small selection of good recent children's books. The staff doesn't seem to be very enthusiastic, but you can take as long as you want to browse yourself. more

Just like their name says, it'll make you think 8/9/2005

This bookstore is mostly for college students. They tend to carry predominantly books for courses, and topics that students are interested in. It is a co-op store, so all the staff has a vested interest in seeing it do well. They do carry a few of the popular books and other items such as note cards, but most of their stock consists of items meant to broden your mind. Non conventional books are all over the place and many are worthwhile as the staff weeds out the fluff books. more

Food for thought is a good place to buy your books in this area. Because the five colleges around contribute enormously to their business, it is mostly catered to them. However this store does not inflate the prices unlike others. I would not recommend going in the beginning of September if you can help it, the lines are horrible. more
