Fresh food 6/22/2006

Caputo's is a pretty small and crowded store. They have fresh fruit and vegetables here along with international food and ingredients. Their prices are always low and that's probably why their are always so many people here. All their registers are open but their always seem to be long lines here. more

Fresh Market 5/4/2006

Cheap and fresh fruits and vegetables are hard to find in this area. But if you go to Caputo's you will not need to look any further. Caputo's is not some fancy grocery store with intercom systems and "fresh value" cards. Its just a basic store, filled with lots and lots of fruits and vegetables that are fresh and inexpensive. So, you're not paying for that fresh valued keychain hanging off of your keys or for those fancy cards in your wallet, you're just paying for some good and fresh produce. They also carry a variety of dry goods and dairy products at great prices. more

The Freshest Place for Fresh Produce 4/25/2006

What has disappeared from the American fabric these days is the old mom and pop grocery store. Those stores that were always a little cramped and jammed full of products on shelves that were always dangerously close to collapse. Yes, it lacked some flash and bang but you knew that the product was fresh, the meat was tender and excellent and the products were stocked with a kind of tender-loving care you could only find in a place integral to a neighborhood. Such a place still exists in and around Chicago. The one nearest me is located on Lake Street in Hanover Park and is called Caputo's Fresh Market. Be warned. You should only go to this store during daytime hours, preferrably during the week. Going on the weekend? Be prepared to walk a long way and for the store to be so crowded that getting the over-sized carts down the aisles requires a kind of degree in physics. Still, the first thing that will greet your eyes is the humongous produce department. It is this that Caputo's is famous. Every kind of vegetable and fruit you could ever want and a few you have probably never heard of is available. This is where you had better learn a few self-defense moves however because this is the place where people clambor over each other to grab the freshest tomato and apple. The selection maybe what brings you in but it's the prices that will keep you back. I have gone in there and bought half a pound of tomatoes, a bag of grapes and four apples and paid less than $5. Of course, the prices vary based on season and the market, but generally, you can't go wrong. Caputo's also has a legendary dairy and meat section, but I have never tried ordering from there. Generally the lines are so long I would probably have to bring a tent and camping gear just to get half a pound of ham. So, if you can stand the crowds and don't mind an occasional elbow while reaching for a head of lettuce, you can't go wrong with Caputo's selection, freshness or prices. more

The Place for Fruits & Veggies 8/16/2005

I have been going to the Caputo's in Hanover Park for the last 4 to 5 years and have not found a better bargain for fruits and vegetables anywhere in the area. These discount fruit and vegetable markets have come in vogue lately because they offer a wider selection of produce and at much better places. Having been to several of these in the vicinity, I can safely say that Caputo's wins hands down. They seem to being doing better than the rest also because they have opened a couple more branches in the area. While some stores may have one or two items on sale, Caputo's wins overall. more

Fresh Foods 8/9/2005

Caputo's is one of the best supermarkets in this area. I don't go here all the time because it is kind of out of the way for me, but if I am having a dinner party or want to cook something special, I always get my ingredients from here because I know they will be FRESH! From produce to meats and cheeses, the quality of the food here is much better than you will find at national chain stores. The difference is noticeable, so try it for yourself! more
