Great Seafood 8/16/2011

Went here on a Sunday early evening with my family. I think we got lucky because the restaurant was really slow when we went and from my experience, this place is always bumpin! I had the ""Market Street Platter"" and it was delicious. Fresh seafood all cooked to my liking. My wife had the AW Shucks casserole which was so good it was hard to stop eating it (big portions). I played ""clean-up"" crew to her meal which left me stuffed.... Interior almost had a chain feel, not much unique atmosphere except for the raw bar in the back. I would recommend AW especially if you can get here on a slower time/day so you get the great service and food i received. more

Good Food, Decent prices 10/21/2009

This is a casual seafood place downtown with good seafood.\r The food is fresh and hot! Pros: good downtown seafood more

Awesome experience 2/29/2008

This place is awesome. Our service was great and the food was delicious. It makes sense that they have omly had 6 bad reviews in the past 4 years. The food seemed fresh, the srervice friendly, and the decor was comfoprtable. I would recommend to anyone visiting our wonderful city. One of my favorites downtown. Try the oysters from the raw bar and ask for Ivan. This guy is incredible at shucking oysters( something like 55 in three minutes) Hvae fun. Pros: Food, service, decor Cons: parking more

Worst dinning experiance of our lives!! 2/10/2008

My husband our 3 children visted A.W. Shucks or whatever its called last week on a short visit to the beach. My family has and has had for years, a home in Wild Dunes so we know the area pretty good. We went to this place with husbands family years ago, it wasn't very good but we figured we would give it another a chance. With out doubt I can say: this was the worst dinning experiance of our lives. My husband took one bit of his yucky food and then inspected the childrens only to find it to be nearly uncooked and foul smelling chicken strips with moldy ranch. It turns out the chicken was still party frozen and the ranch dressing was funky needless to say we immediently took the food away from the children. I talked to a lady to said she was the manager but it was clear the she could care less about the situation. I cannot believe that the city would let a place like this stay in operation, I don't know who ownes this place anymore but its a A.W ful!!! Horriable service, prices, and tourist trap decore, unsafe food, the list goes on and on. We went to wendys later and had a much better meal. Pros: ummmm......wendy's is only a short drive? Cons: food, prices, decore more

Avoid this place at all cost! 2/4/2008

This is probably the worst restaurant in Charleston SC. I grew up in this city and this place is a black mark on Charleston?s fine image. Food is totally over hyped, and this place has been going down hill for years. I urge anyone to try one of the other fine restaurants in the area! Pros: central location Cons: food, management, service and prices...this place is a black mark on our beautiful city more

AW Shucks was Shucks I should have gone to another resturant. 2/2/2008

To start, the service was slow. My margarita's only resemblance to a real margarita was the salt on the rim. Sent it back and got a Bloody Mary. My wife's ""She Crab Soup"" had a 6 inch by 1/8 inch piece of plastic in it. Sent it back and told the waitress not to replace it. The shrimp in our sandwich tasted like frozen shrimp.\r Our waitress said that she talked to the manager about the soup. After we finished, (the French fries were the best part of the meal), the waitress brought the bill. She said that the manager ""comped"" the margarita and the ""She Crab Soup"". Well, duh!!\r It would have been nice if the manager came to our table to apologize for their sorry restaurant! more

A.W. Shucks--Charleston's Most Over-Rated Seafood 6/30/2007

Poor seafood quality, high prices, small servings. Much better seafood restaurants in the area.\r B. Flowers--Atlanta, Ga. Pros: Easy to get to if you're in the historic district Cons: Poor quality-small servings-over-priced more

Should Try It Out! 4/22/2006

I enjoyed my dinner at AW Shucks, and I do not even eat sea food! No, the restaraunt is not trying to pass itself off as some time of ""fine dinning"" experience-it is just a local sea food joint that has a following of locals and returning Charleston visitors. I had the pleasure of ordering the pecan encrusted chicken two weekends in a row and I would do it again. The food is undoubtably Southern and tasty. The staff is mainly college students who are freindly and helpful. The atomsphere is like that of any downtown sea food joint-sometimes noisy and crowded, but worth waiting for. Overall, I have enjoyed my experiences at AW Sucks and plan to return again! Pros: More than sea food Cons: Parking difficult more

Gross 7/22/2005

After all the hype we ate here, and the food was awful. Will reccommend the fried green tomatoes, the water, and that's all. Pros: fried green tomatoes, air conditioning Cons: the rest of the menu, taste, limited parking more

Aw, shucks. 1/23/2004

After a great meal the night before, we were trying to find a nice restaurant to have some seafood. I will resist the temptation of calling it AW Sucks. It did not prove to be the restaurant it had been built up to be by the folks we talked to and the other reviews. The she-crab soup was okay. The steamed oysters were okay. Maybe I am just not the shrimp and grits type of customer that they are looking for, but it was somewhat of a letdown. It looked like they had a good bar and that it might be okay to hand out in the evening, but eat before you go. Pros: Accessible, Ambiance Cons: Food, Value more

My Review 3/25/2003

This restaurant was awesome. If you love seafood, the selection is tantalizing. It is definitely on my list of places to eat at when in Charleston. more

excellent! 2/5/2003

Our first night in Charleston, this is where we ate, and it was DELICIOUS! The Crab dip and She-Crab soup were excellent starters and the broiled entree was fantastic. Expensive, but worth every penny. more

SHUCKS!! WISH I WAS THERE 9/4/2002

WE GO TO CHARLESTON OFTEN AND MAKE IT A POINT TO EAT HERE AT LEAST ONCE DURING OUR STAY. YOU CAN EAT OUTSIDE BY THE OLD MARKET PLACE OR INSIDE. EITHER WAY YOU WILL STILL ENJOY SOME OF THE BEST SEAFOOD IN CHARLTESTON. LUNCH OR DINNER IT ALWAYS SEEMS TO BE PACKED...THIS TELLS YOU SOMETHING....WE ARE ALWAYS SEATED PROMPTLY WITH EXTREMELY EFFICIENT SERVICE THAT FOLLOWS....PUT IT ON YOUR LIST DURING YOUR NEXT VISIT. Cons: CONGESTED AREA more

Even Forest Would Agree 8/23/2002

This is got to be the best seafood restaurant in Charleston hands down. I love to get the stuffed shrimp and the yummy dip. Great for dates or family dining and it conviently located on the market. Pros: location, worth every penny, inside and outside di Cons: usually long wait more

Biggest Let Down Ever 6/20/2002

Upon a very long over do trip to Charleston I ask where was a great place to go and eat. A W Shucks people would say. Heading into town you see all the billboards, you see all the ads telling you ""top rated""... Well I have never been so miss informed before. The food was terrible, the service worse and over it was a bad experiance. And to top it all off the price was way to expensive for what you got! If you are looking for great seafood and great service I would NOT suggest A W Shucks to anyone! Pros: NONE, NONE, NONE Cons: Food, Service, Price more

No Jive at Shucks! 5/24/2002

A great authentic oyster bar with great atmosphere and other dishes. Extra friendly service, wonderful roasted oysters! More than reasonable prices. Pros: open air more

Great Food and Service 5/15/2002

I was recently in Charleston and luckily found this restaurant while exploring the Historical District. I would HIGHLY recommend it. Pros: quality seafood, great service, friendly staff Cons: very busy more

  • In Short
Founded in 1953 as a hamburger-and-root-beer stand, this nostalgic eatery is known for its intercom ordering system and roller-skating carhops. While servers rarely roller skate anymore, the famous made-to-order, all-beef burgers and thick malts are still menu favorites. Other signature items include Toaster sandwiches (made with thick Texas toast), extra-long chili and cheese hot dogs and hand-battered onion rings and tater tots. Desserts include chocolate, vanilla and strawberry shakes and fresh fruit slushes.
