Malasadas and other treats available here 8/19/2005

A friend of a friend recommended Agnes for their malasadas -- claimed that they were THE best on the island. I finally had the chance to swing by there one day while running errands. The shop itself is cozy and quaint, bright and immaculate. The perfect place to hang out and read the paper, sip a beverage and have a scone. Or cinnamon roll. Or whatever else catches your eye (and nose). Their selection is amazing and it's all right in front of you. I felt like a kid in a candy store. Of course, I was there on a mission and not to be deterred by all the other delicious treats, I ordered six malasadas (ummm, I was there with a friend and we were going to share -- I swear!). Now I'm usually not at all discriminating when it comes to anything sweet. But I have to say I was a little disappointed in the malasadas. I don't know what it was but I'm sure it's because I had tasted another bakery's version and inevitably compared the two. My friend pointed out that the malasadas here had a "lemony" taste. I thought they weren't as fluffy and soft as the other one. Not to say they weren't good -- they were still consumed with vigor. I ate two and a half as a matter of fact. The only other thing I have to say about Agnes is their service. The staff is wonderful but service can be a little slow. This is understandable though -- you want malasadas to be hot and fresh. It's a popular place, too, so the lines are expected to be long. Not my favorite bakery but I'll still stop in from time to time. more
