The ones that are lucky (or is that unlucky?) end up at the John Ancrum SPCA on Leeds Avenue.
Sadly, this is not a no-kill shelter. It seems that people in Charleston are hard-pressed to get those puppies and kitties spayed and neutered, which is why SPCA is there to begin with.
However, the SPCA is nice and I've adopted so many animals from there I can't even keep track.
The facilities are what's to be expected from any SPCA, and if you go there and tell them you're interested in a dog, they'll let you go out back and play with the dogs for a while. Even if you're not looking for a dog, tell them you are so you can give these pooches a few minutes of chase-the-ball happiness in the possibly few days left of their lives.
Oh and please spay and neuter your pets, otherwise they could end up here.....and sad things happen if they're not adopted or reclaimed after 7 days....
