I can’t overstate what an experience this place can be. Chef Jacques Leonardi is a wildman who specializes in fun but demands excellence in his kitchen. It’s the kind of place where anything can happen from brass bands materializing on the spot to the chef joining you at the bar for a shot, or two. Expect a long wait at this wildly popular Cajun/Creole funhouse in the Riverbend neighborhood. Large portions of traditional local dishes and inventive riffs on local standards are served at reasonable prices. Favorites include blackened redfish, deep fried softshell (Godzilla meets the Killer Tomatoes), paneed rabbit. The sides: greens, mashed potatoes and corn macque choux are also good. Tip: If you have a group of five or more, you can make a reservation. If not, put your name on the list and walk down the block for a drink at the Maple Leaf.
