Excellent addition to Astoria's lodging options! 9/25/2005

Since the renovation and reopening of the Hotel Elliott, it's been obvious that there is a demand for higher-end, boutique lodging choices in Astoria. The Cannery Pier is now open to help fulfill that niche. The scenic beauty of the hotel is unparalleled. It sits on a pier that extends over 500 feet into the Columbia River and affords amazing, expansive views of the river, the Astoria bridge, the ocean and the ship traffic. All 46 rooms face the river, so every room has a great view. All rooms also have small balconies. It would be nice to have larger balconies with chairs. The rooms are spacious and all include fireplaces. King rooms have couches as well and rooms with two queens have a couple nice sitting chairs. There are also several one-bedroom suites and one two-bedroom penthouse. Summer rates start at $199, which is quite reasonable for the amenities and location. The finishes and furniture throughout are nice (although I do think they should've gone with a real wood floor in the main lobby), the guest room bathrooms are especially well-done. The aesthetic is somewhere between rustic and Scandinavian modern - sound like an odd mix, but it's well-executed, comfortable and reminiscent of the location's history as a cannery (note the building is entirely new - the cannery simply used to be located on the same pier) and a nod to the Scandinavian flavor of Astoria. The historical pictures and displays by the Clatsop County Historical Society are an especially pleasant touch. Common areas are inviting and the open beaming in the multi-story lobby is lovely. Service is attentive and quick. It's a nice touch to have a Columbia River Day Spa location on site. There are a few things that still need to be attended to - paving the entire approach to the hotel is number one on that list - but the hotel has just opened and is still working out the minor kinks. All in all this is a great property that I would highly recommend. A wonderful addition to Astoria and a sign of things to come. more
