The tech left the unit off while he was waiting for a diagnosis on the repair. Your unit was never left in pieces, other that the wires and cover to the gas valve left off the failed part.
We provided a quote to replace the failed part and offered you a estimate to replace the 27 years old gas furnace.
At no time did we mislead you or destroy the unit.
