I had lived with my fiance for about a year in a Butler run property. We never heard from them, just sent them a check once a month. We lost power during the ice storm and were without for about 3 weeks with debris all over the yard and up against the house. I had called a couple of times, but had just spoken to Diane and was told I'd get a call back. When we didn't hear from them for a few weeks, my fiance had called J Butler to follow up and find out how long we would be without power for and if they had any details on when they might get someone out to clean the yard. When I came home I found her in tears. Apparently Jim thought it was appropriate to tell her "we are not responsible for natural disasters and tell your boyfriend calling every day is not going to get the trees out of your yard, good bye."
When I called and spoke to him he was busy telling me they couldn't get to the yard until Spring.(mind you there were everything from small trees to cable wires everywhere) He also proceeded to tell me my fiance was just being over dramatic and all he told her was "it wasn't there problem"
I was not happy then, but when April came and the debris was still in the yard we called again. After a week and a half of phone calls with no return call I called up and told the receptionist that we would simply have the yard cleaned, save the receipts and then deduct it from the rent. Jim immediately got on the phone and told me I didn't know who I was dealing with and if I thought thing were bad now "watch what happens" if we withhold rent.
I have never been threatened by a landlord before, but this guy was talking like he was one part lawyer, one part cop, one part Tony Soprano. We moved out the following month breaking our lease and losing our entire security deposit, and I will tell you it was entirely worth it to be away from such a person and company.
Bad Company, Bad People
