I've been going to Brouwer's for a long time, and always love their beer selection and atmosphere, and knowledgeable staff. I spent the walk down the hill raving about the place to my two guests from the UK today, only setting up the following shock even more. After waiting more than 20 minutes while a waiter passed our closed-menu table no less than 5 times, we proceeded to the bar to order our drinks. There, the bartender took one look at my guest's EU-issued photo ID (accepted literally the world over), before tossing it back at him exclaiming ""I can't accept this Danish cr**."" His words.\r

The rudeness of this comment was astonishing, let alone the irony coming from a ""Belgian ale house."" The comment was obviously xenophobic and offensive. To be clear, as an attorney, I can assure readers that EU-issued photo ID's are acceptable under WA State law. Further, they're accepted by every other bar we've visited in the Seattle area, and I'm assured they were accepted on my guests' three prior visits to other parts of the US. Apparently though, Brouwer's has a decidedly un-international attitude, if not policy.\r

My days of raving about Brouwers to visitors, and taking them there to sample good beer, are over. This place should post a sign at the door - ""Visitors from countries whose beer we serve are Not Welcome inside""
Pros: Great beer selection, good crowd
Cons: Rudest comment I've ever heard from bartender/waiter
