Average but friendly 9/28/2008

The reviews we read on this site are very misleading. Unless 5 stars means average, the ratings are way over the top. We came because of the proximity to an evening event we were attending and needed to have an early dinner. \r \r This is a friendly place with a comfortable atmosphere - table linens, oil candles, nice window/open air seating available. Service is efficient, attentive and fast. The food, however, is average at best. The cost for the prix fixe menu is so reasonable that perhaps average is OK. Those items are clearly the best value. The ala carte items are a bit more, so it would be fair to expect better, but the salad greens arrived limp, the avocado spotted and discolored. The pasta was drowned in an unremarkable sauce (the lamb ragu should have been really rustic and flavorful) and somewhat overcooked. A seafood linguini dish was only slightly better. The proseco at $15 a glass is a bit overpriced, but many bottle selections on the wine list are reasonable and offer good value. Think Italian diner, and realistically 2-3 stars. For $75 per person you could do better, even in NYC. Pros: Service, ambience, dessert Cons: Food is far from fine dining more
