I don't know what the policy is for most auto shops, but I found it really disconcerting that they went through my glove box for no reason at all (the documents they needed to inspect my windows were handed to them -- and that's all they were there to do). They found paperwork in there from another auto shop that I had visited for a second opinion, and confronted me with this information in an accusatory fashion -- as if they not only had the explicit right to ransack my private things, but then had the audacity to get upset about what they found. It's like snooping through someone's diary and they throwing a fit because they wrote something in there about you.
I know some mechanics go into the glove box to find owner's manuals and such, but in this case there was no need. What were they looking for in there? And even after they did it, why create a scene over it? It was just awkward and unnecessary -- and it made them look bad. When I got back to my car, my glove box was hanging open and in a disheveled state -- with the paperwork in question sticking out.
Bottom line: This place has no respect for your privacy -- and feels entitled to search your vehicle unannounced and without cause. Go somewhere else.
