AMAZING SUSHI!!!!! 6/15/2010

This is the best sushi I have ever had. It melts right in your mouth and the fish is super fresh. I love the spicy tuna roll & crazy crab? roll. The rolls are really large also and 2 will fill you up! I don't know how people got bad service here, i feel like the staff just speaks english as a 2nd language and may come across in a different way. This sushi is amazing you HAVE TO TRY IT!!!!!!! I live on long island and every time I go to the city I think of yama! Pros: Fresh fish, nice decor, amazing sushi! more

BEST SUSHI!!!!! FRESH FISH!!! AMAZING QAULITY!!! 5/29/2008

I lived in NY for most of my life, I went to YAMA on Irving and 17th since it first opened - after I moved to Los Angeles I was sad to see that I could never find sushi as good as YAMA in LA. I was so happy when they opened YAMA 49 as my mom lives on the Upper East Side - it comes in second to the Iriving Place location but it is still amazing. I look forward to coming here every time I come back to NY to visit my family. \r To the people who wrote the staff was rude, first of all - you dont go to YAMA for the person sitting you at a table you go for the fish! Second most of the waiters speak English but as a second language - there is a cultural difference - they dont sit at the table at chat with you, they take your order and bring your food. YOU GO HERE FOR THE AMAZING SUSHI!!! \r I have been to this location on every day of the week they are open and I have never had one piece of fish that did not melt in my mouth - they have the freshest fish I have ever eaten so I was shocked to read that people thought they got old fish - perhaps they do not know what fresh fish is. YAMA has a cult following for a reason - get over the fact they wont hold your hand and chat you up - they are there to serve you not give you hugs - go to YAMA for FRESH AMAZING SUSHI!! \r I have gone with my pregnant sister many times and they always made sure we were sat a table she was comfortable at, and made sure she had food she could eat. I just came home for the birth and the first thing she asked for after the hospital was YAMA sushi. SO BELIEVE THE AMAZING REVIEWS THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!! Pros: FRESH fish, imaginative rolls, great prices Cons: They have not opened one in Los Angeles more

Terrible Maitre D' yells back at us 3/30/2008

I was shocked to find how many ppl had complained about the maitre D'. On the week days the woman there is ok. But Saturday night it was this Chinese man and not the manager. We walked in and he said he could seat us at the bar. We noticed an empty table at the back and asked about it. That's when he became aggressive and defensive saying he was doing the best he could with customers coming in and he was managing the seating as best as he could. We were taken aback as we had merely inquired about the empty table and we were customers who were coming in. One thing if the tables were reserved. We sat at the sushi bar and 5 mins later another couple walked in and he prompty sat them at the tables in the dining room which we had inquired about. Pros: Rude Maitre D, lack of waiters, sub par sushi more

Terrible Service 3/1/2008

The Maitre'd (A not so nice man) is the rudest impolite men I had ever encountered in this business. The Sushi is below average. Will never spend a dime in that place. more

Do Not Waste Your Time In This Place!! Rude Manager and Staff!! 2/16/2008

Maitre'd had attittude and had a fake smile. Manager acted like he does not care if customers dined in his establishment. Servers were unpolite. We had a negative experience with the service. We felt like they did not care whether or not customers came back. Sushi was below average. The fish was not fresh. We would not go back. Do not waste your time at this place. There are other sushi places in NYC. We were very disappointed with both the food and the service. Cons: Arrogant Manager, Wait Staff Rude more

Horrible Service!!! Bring Immodium!! We Would Not Go Back! 2/16/2008

* Maitre' d was terrible. She would not sit my friend who was 8 months pregnant in a more comfortable table. Our request was not unreasonable given her condition. One would think that they would be more humane and consider this request. Manager was even worse. We thought he would understand but was not sympathetic. He was arrogant and said you are free to leave if you would not like to sit in the assigned table. \r * Server was rude. She was not smiling the whole time. We felt like she was doing us a favor when we requested for our water glasses to be filled. \r * Sushi was nothing to drive home about. Beware of the hype. It was very average. Worst, we all had to take immodium after the dinner due to discomfort. after eating their sushi. Cons: Service, Food more

rude rude rude horrible service, 7/16/2007

Great food, bad delivery 5/2/2007

The sushi here is great but I wouldn't recommend ordering out. After waiting for over an hour for my food the delivery man didn't have enough change. Ridiculous. Stick with eating at the restaurant. more

more trendy than yama(irving place) 11/20/2006

they serve same food as yama down on irving, but atmosphere is totally different, this tries to be more trendy and fancier, where as irving is a sushi joint in an underground small space. i liked this yama on 49th st but not as much as the irving one. however u dont have to wait at yama 49 like u do on irving. food is similar, large good portions Pros: food more

Huge pieces of good quality fish. 10/22/2006

Yama is a very attractive restaurant, and much more spacious than its downtown counterpart. It is, however, more expensive. That said the Sushi for two is a very good deal for $52. It is a huge plate with 18 pieces of Sushi an 3 rolls. The pieces of fish on the Sushi are perhaps the biggest I've ever seen - about twice as big as those at other restaurants. What's more, the quality of the fish on the regular menu is surprisingly good. The one downside, however, is that the chef put far too mach wasabi underneath the fish. The miso soup, which comes with the meal, is quite good. I will definitely be returning and can't wait to try to Omakase. Pros: Fresh fish Cons: Too much wasabi more

large & fresh rolls 10/8/2006

i came here with 5 others on saturday night. i heard that the place is usually packed, but it wasnt full when we got there at 7:30pm (maybe because it was columbus day weekend). the interior of the place is sleek, modern, with heavy, sharp cornered, dark wood tables and long dark bench seating. theres a sushi counter in the front as well.\r \r we started out with 6 of their special yama rolls (~$13 each). i dont remember the names of any of them. the fish was all very fresh and the rolls were huuuge. it came out all on one big share plate. some of the rolls were riceless and carb-friendly, and others substituted paper thin cucumber slices for the seaweed. most of them were combinations of 2 or 3 types of fish (mostly yellowtail, salmon, & toro). we were pretty full by the time we had finished the rolls, but made room for a few appetizer dishes. this included some very chewy calamari served with a tempura dipping sauce and some edamame (with tough husks on the beans). the appetizers werent nearly as impressive as the rolls and since they were roughly the same price, i think that ill just stick entirely to the sushi next time. Pros: large rolls, relatively inexpensive, fresh fish Cons: unfriendly service more

City NO1 sushi chef ? 9/20/2006

From my experience, I can definitely tell that the Sushi chef in Yma49 is one of the best in the city. I ordered ""Omakase"" $60 per person and had a greate greate sushi which is not typical yama style (large fish) but real Japanese ""Edo-Mae"" style (really smaller). Fresh fish & chefs technique made me so satisfied. more

sleek, convenient, but no longer a bargain 8/21/2006

Yama's sushi is definitely a cut above ""good,"" but it used to be that they didn't cost much more than the average sushi joint. On 49th street, it does. Granted the space is very nice and the service is good, but Yama 49 is no bargain; you pay for what you get. And it's a small peeve, but they still haven't figured out how to properly make a spicy tuna roll (theirs is a regular tuna roll with a few tablespoons of goopy mayo poured over the top). more

Sleekest Yama yet 7/30/2006

Seated promptly, greeted by all sushi staff, wait staff and manager. Seaweed salad a bit dry, shumai delicious, tuna tataki excellent, edemame a bit overcooked. All sushi, as expected, fantastic. What a treat to have a Yama in midtown. Room done exquisitely. Sleek and gorgeous from front to back. Pros: Food, Setting, Service more

Flagship of Yama 7/12/2006

I am a regular patron of the Yama franchise in NYC. The prices are reasonable and the portions are sizeable. However, the foremost draw is reliability of satisfaction. I generally find their sushi fresh and velvety. The 49th street location provides the authentic toothsome Yama quality, but also presents a sleek new space with much attention to layout and design, delivering a more elegant dining experience. Pros: Beautiful space, Excellent sushi Cons: Crowded more

Great neighbourhood restaurant! 5/24/2006

Yama49 has opened just 6 weeks ago. I took my friend to this new opened restaurant for lunch. Since there are so many Japanese restaurants in midtown, I did not have high expectations. But, I found the food was very good, the potion was huge, ambiance was very nice and service was impecable! Also, very reasonable for this quality and portion. I will definitly come back here quite often. Pros: food, decore, atmospehere more
