Recently, a good friend was a temporary hire for this company for two different periods. Because he is a hard worker, he was encouraged to apply for full-time since there was an opening (or so he was told by the warehouse supervisor). After two interviews, another person was hired who had forklift experience (or so he was told). About a month later, my friend was again assigned to this company as a temporary hire. On the first day, he and another temp hire were called by the warehouse supervisor into his office and told since both had previously put in applications, there were a couple of openings in the company. The two men were told and lead to believe that by performing well they would be hired. Of course, this immediately set up an unnecessary competitive situation between the two men rather than a team approach to their job.
This good friend is a hard working person and regardless of what kind of ""carrot"" is dangled, his work ethic is to do the best job possible. He eventually got the other person to work as a team but not without continuing effort on his part to keep things from getting nasty. However, two weeks later, the other person did not show up for work and my friend was left to finish the job. On numerous occasions, he was told how great a job he was doing by his immediate supervisor. For two weeks, the warehouse supervisor who had called my friend into his office and given the ""rah, rah"" talk kept encouraging him and his immediate supervisor kept telling my friend ""what a great job he was doing."" The temp job ended after three weeks. According to the temp placement agency, this tactic has happened with other temps. They are told about an opening and told if they work hard, they have a good chance of being hired.
The week after his assignment was over, an ad came out in Midweek and then the Sunday paper for a number of positions with Webco. My friend called the warehouse supervisor and was told - there were ""management changes"" and maybe if he got another temp assignment he could show the new management how good a worker he was. However, there was never another temporary hire request.
What kind of hiring policy is this? What kind of biases does this company have? With the present economy, many people have been laid off or have had hours cut back. It is important to keep one's morale up to find means of earning additional income or full-time employment.
What was done to my friend (and I wonder how many others) was unprofessional, unnecessarily cruel and EVIL! Leading people on is demoralizing and dysfunctional.. The truth may hurt for awhile but lying and giving false hope to a person is an EVIL act. This is a small island and I would have expected better from a local company.
Others need to know what kind of company Webco is - If it treats people this way, what do they do to their clients? Why would anyone trust a company with these practices? What other nasty, underhanded methods does it practice? Perhaps it is time for a union to step in and protect the employees from unethical and, perhaps, illegal practices. Believe me when I say, this is not over. Personally, I think one star is more than this company deserves.
