Awful Experience 11/5/2011

Eh is right. Barf is more appropriate. The night started out ok, mainly due to the 3 scorpion cocktails I drank before dinner was served, since they messed it up not once but twice! Luckily, the buzz was on, and when the crispy shrimp appetizer finally arrived, it was dry and bland. Even the dipping sauce seemed watered down. The grilled squid tasted awfully fishy, and I couldn't bare to eat more than 2 bites as I was gagging in my mouth. Luckily the vermicelli noodle bowl was just OK, but I was just happy at that time there was something in the least bit palatable. I'm not usually one to complain to a server, but this time I did, and he responded smugly that I just didn't understand the flavor. more

MSG Reaction 7/30/2008

If you have allergies, avoid the seafood claypot. I had to rush outside because of a severe MSG reaction. I should have known better than to order it in the first place as most soup bases list Monosodium glutamate as an ingedient. =( Pros: Quick Service, nice atmosphere, large selection Cons: not allergy safe more

Worst Vietnamese food 7/13/2008

I've been to dozens of Vietnamese restaurants from Virginia to New York, and this was the worst I've seen. The Bo Luc Lac (steak) was tiny over-cooked cubes of tasteless meat covered in a mucky brown sauce. The chicken lemon grass was slabs of rubber dunked in a mysteriously tasteless brown sauce - with only a slight aftertaste of lemon grass - more a memory of what it should have tasted like than an actual taste. Cons: Tasteless overcooked food more

Best spring rolls 4/19/2008

Best crispy spring rolls I have had since I was in Vietnam. When I was station there I used to go to the homes of several of the Vietnamese women's homes who worked on our compound. They would always serve these and give me a bag of 'leftovers' to bring back to the compound - very fond memories. Great menu, great food, great service, and good prices. I had the Bun Cha Gio with the Grilled Meatballs. It was very tasty. I'll be back. Pros: Spring Rolls more

good service, wonderful food a little more pricey than Washington Avenue 9/7/2007

Viet Nam is one of my favorite places. I don't know why I haven't written about it before. First, they don't take reservations, so, on Friday and Saturday, it's good to go early - around 6:30 to 7. Pros: very good food, good service, helpful Cons: a bit more expensive than Washington Avenue more

Food it is good, opinions not 7/31/2007

I have been a long time customer of the Vietnam Restaurant when I lived in Philadelphia. The food is great, the restaurant is clean, and service is quick. However, I did not appreciate it when a maitre'd commented on my top in Vietnamese thinking that I would not understand her. Her tone and attitude was rude when she said, ""Look at that little girls shirt"" to the waiters, who all gather between the bar and the registers immediately looked at my shirt. I was almost about to leave, but my guest and I had spent quite a bit of time manuervering through downtown traffic getting there. Not that I want to stop coming there, but when a cockeyed hostess speaks ignorantly about a customer behind their back, it simple makes me lose any appetite I have for the food. Not to mention, I wore nothing risque, as other women there wore things exactly like mines or even more revealing. If a special dress code to wear things that cover you from the top of your necl down in the middle of hot 90 degree weather, then it should be specified clearly or just simply don't seat me. Pros: good eats at affordable price Cons: parking is scarce, judgemental hostess who talk behind your back when they think you don't understand them in their native tongue more

Authentic fabulous Vietnamese food 4/16/2007

I love going to Vietnam. When ever I bring a friend to try Vietnamese food here they love it and always want to go back! The BBQ platter is great, although I always end up filling up before the entree comes out! The spring rolls, broken rice and (Bun) vermicelli entrees are a must try. It does get crowded so come early and parking is not the best. Don't forget to ask for Spiracha and Hoisin (sweet hot sauce and a BBQ type sauce) to spice up your dish! The staff are friendly, very quick and knowledgeable about the menu. I heard that they put in a bar on the top floor, but I have yet to check that out. The Pho is good here although, Pho 75 on Washington does offer larger portions and a larger variety, but if you want something other then that this is the place to go. Another perk is that it's easy on the wallet for the amount of food! Pros: Big Portions Great Price Delicious Cons: Can get crowded, parking more

cheapest gourmet meal 4/14/2007

so affordable and yet competitive with every great restaurant in philly...everything is delicious...great portions, friendly service, authentic more

I love this place! 12/7/2006

I have been going to vietnam for 7 years and I always get the exact same thing -- I long for it, it's THAT good. The service at Vietnam is excellent and I love the new, more modern additions to their drinks menu (though it was always fun to roder goofy cocktails like a Mai Tai or a Drunken B astard). The food is always deliscious and the prices are incredible -- if you don't have anything to drink you can have a huge meal for two and spend less than $35 TOTAL. I highly recommend it! Pros: The food is cheap and delicious Cons: The service is sometimes TOO fast - it's nice to hang out for a bit between courses more

Vietnamese food at its finest 11/20/2006

Vietnam is great Vietnamese food, even for those who don't usually eat it. Great atmosphere and good prices, I recommend the Bun! more

Good clean fun... 10/10/2006

Very reasonably priced, clean and inviting atmosphere, good portions, good service. Two can eat and enjoy a drink for under $30... not a bad deal. Pros: Very reasonably priced (don't know if I would call it "cheap") Cons: Parking. more

Great pick! 11/6/2005

This place is great! I've been here a handful of times and every time I return I fall back in love with it. The restaurant is modern, clean, and chic. The food is delicious and the menu is big so try new things! All this at a great price! more

Best Vietnamese Ever 10/5/2005

We fly to Phila from NC just to have dinner at Vietnam Restaurant. I've tried other Vietnamese restaurants around the US, and this is the best! Please appreciate what you have at 221 N. 11th St. We love the food, atmosphere, and drinks, and have yet to encounter anyone who thinks otherwise! Pros: Food, Drinks, Atmosphere more

Fantastic! 7/28/2005

Anyone who says Vietnam is sub-par is crazy. The place is huge, 4 floors, and is consistently packed. They don't take reservations, yet thousands find that it is worth the wait. Must try: the vermicelli bowls, the grilled meatballs, the Vietnamese coffee. Philadelphia residents know that this is one of the best places to go int the city! Pros: excellent service, large menu, great prices Cons: no reservations more

cold soup 6/8/2005

There's minimum you have to order when you eat at this restaurant to eat. No problem. The food was average. No problem. At least give me a hot pho or a bigger bowl when i order a large bowl (bland broth). The spring roll could use a lil work. Maybe my first experience there wasn't good. But i don't plan to come back the second time. Across the street... more

best vietnamese in philly 4/28/2005

outstanding selection for both entrees as well as appetizers. excellent place to go as a small group of friends to enjoy the expanded appetizer offerings. soups offer the real deal authentic as well as some tasty choices for those not as inclined to spicy or seafood offerings. get there early on a weekend night. it's close quarters and not as private, but the food is defintely worth every penny. Pros: taste!, selection, value Cons: tight seating, parking is tough more

always excellent 2/14/2005

I have tried many restaurants in this neighborhood, and this one is ALWAYS consistently DELICIOUS! vegetables and meat are always fresh, and the atmosphere is extraordinarily clean and minimalist. I have gone back many times, and can always find a new suprise on the extensive menu.Try the broken rice platters and the lemongrass soup. Diners from Vietnam may find the cuisine too mild, but to me, it's just perfect. I A prefer as an alternative to the standard chinese or thai restaurants. **Don't forget to check out the new 4th floor private room and bar--very cool! Pros: cuisine, staff, cleanliness Cons: parking more

Not great 11/2/2004

I am used to much better vietnamese food than this. We got the grilled shrimp appetizer and it was really good. The iced coffee I got was too weak. We got the house special mix grill noodel bowl. The only thing good was the spring roll and the meat ball. The chicken tasted old and the pork was dry. The broken rice platter with grilled beef was another let down. It was just rice and dry tasteless beef. No garnish, not much taste. Let's just say I wouldn't run back to this place. Pros: spring roll Cons: , quality, decor more

Good, but... 8/17/2004

...not great, in my opinion. Maybe it's a question of having my loyalties set, but multiple meals at both establishments have led me to favour Vietnam Palace across the street. There's nothing really ""wrong"" with the food here, though it seems to lack some of the ""zing"" I'm used to in Vietname food. Service can be a little slow, too, as this place often fills up at night and can be very packed. Not my first choice when I'm in the neighborhood. Pros: inexpensive, attractive decor more
