Poor treatment of customers!! I wouldn't go back there! 2/6/2012

Very poor treatment of customers. Firstly the food took a really long time to arrive and to top that they forced us to leave the restaurant in a hurry cause it was nearing their closing time. Extremely disrespectful! They forced us pay the checks while we were eating so they could drive us out immediately after. more

Horrible food 6/16/2010

I went to this restaurant after reading the reviews on citysearch. I found following issues, 1. It was 90+ outside and the place was extremely hot. Not sure if they were running AC at all. There were only 2 or 3 fans running covering the whole area 2. Food was horrible. The coconut chutney smelled bad. Parathas were stale. I didn't find sounth Indian things like Dosas any better. Overall disappointing food taste. Not sure if the positive reviews here are old reviews or I went on a bad day today (Wed buffet) Cons: Too hot place, bad food more

give it a try! 4/13/2010

We really enjoy this place!! If you are looking to please everyone in your party you need to try it. I often try new dishes and are never dissapointed. Pros: great food more

Always good 11/17/2009

We've been eating at Udupi since 2002 and always enjoy it. Just ate there 2 nights ago; two of us dined lavishly for only $38 pre-tip. Service is usually excellent, though when they are crowded, service can lag. And some of the tables are a bit close together if the restaurant is really packed. Those are the only downsides; the food is always wonderful and I'm delighted that the owners have kept the quality up over the years. We've never once had a bad meal there. Pros: Wonderful food Cons: few more

A nice change 11/12/2009

As someone who used to be vegan and vegetarian at various points it was refreshing to be able to pick anything off the buffet without having to worry (especially if you're new to Indian food). When they are busy sometimes you don't get your glass refilled as much and sometimes when you ask questions there is some language barrier. I enjoy eating here and have mentioned it to vegetarians I know who live farther away than I (its a bit of a drive) that it is worth the trip if you like mildly spicy Indian food. My husband does not have a hard time finding things to eat either (he's always been a meat eater). Pros: All vegetarian, buffet usually has a lot of choices Cons: Sometimes language barrier and sometimes service more

Such variety and so delicious 8/21/2009

huge buffet, nice assortment of food. Pros: excellent vegetarian selection more

Most wonderful Indian food ever!!! 7/9/2009

One can only wonder at the range of opinions shown for this great restaurant...It seems that actual Indian people recognize and delight in the food! To me that says it all...I love this place and thier food is great. The service has always been polite and attentive.. I have gone there like,20 times with NO complaint...I did not drop in just one time to try to impress out of town snobs, I do not have a waitstaff persecution complex and I am not ""scared and confused"" by a plate of food that isn't from KFC. I have to ask all detractors...is it ignorance or are you being paid to slam this establishment? Blatant advertising for another location is pretty transparent...and have many of you ever really encountered a place that is consistently bad as these seemingly paid-off bad reviews are trying to make it seem? "" I walked in the door and a rude dark skinned man threw 8 week old curry on my episcopalian wedding dress! Then he slapped my puppy and sold my grandmother!"" Blatant racism abounds.""They re-serve the food off of plates others don't finish-it's an Indian thing"" Are you kidding me? Does anyone believe this? How about this...if you can't stop being a r@cist -j3rk long enough to realize when perfect food is placed before you...go eat somewhere else and spare us the slander. if you are looking for some heavy ""theme-y"" ambiance ,sort of an Indian Medeval Times...please remember...the waitstaff are not trademarked mascots in funny suits anxiously awaiting the opportunity to give you a little belly dance...these are real human beings just as deserving of respect as anyone. If you go there with an open mind and a desire to learn about and enjoy really good food, Udupi Cafe is there for you. Pros: Perfect in every way Cons: None, whatsoever. more

Too much MSG !! 4/14/2009

Unimpressive food. Afterwards I felt very heavy, slept and woke with headaches. I think they are putting too much MSG on the food to enhance it's flavor. Mediocre Indian food. Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Frozen Indian food - heated up and served 2/24/2009

I ordered a plate of vada and they gave me the oldest and hardest vada I have ever eaten in my life. I asked the waiter about it, he went inside, came back and told that they cannot make any vada. They are serving all old and heated stuff. And the prices are expensive as well. I will never go back to that place and I suggest the same to everybody reading this review. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

I am a ""Meatatarian"" and I could eat at this vegetarian buffet every day !! 10/1/2008

I am from South India and this food is very authentic. I can eat the excellent Idli, Dosai with sambar and coconut chutney and pakoras from the buffet every day. I have brought some friends here and they are slow to changing from the usual meat curries and breads from traditional Indian restaurants. I think they should definitely serve samosas and more potato dishes on the buffet. Pros: Awesome variety that changes daily on the buffet. Try dipping the Idli in the Sambar and the Dosai in the Coconut Chutney-it's an awesome taste. more

One of the best restaurant in triangle area. 10/1/2008

Wonderful South Indian vegetarian food. more

Not good food. 9/27/2008

I went to this restaurant on 9/27/2008 for dinner with a group of friends and ordered one of their ""Royal"" south indian items. Waited for about 25 mins for the food to get ready and was NOT amazed at all. The food they serve is very ordinary and NOT fresh. This is an indian thing, really. I would NOT be amazed if they take food from unfinished plates and serve it. Bad food. I really prefer Saffron over this restaurant any time. I will NOT be going there again. more

The best Vegetarian dinner around 5/15/2008

My wife and our son (who had just returned from a trip to India) had an excellent dinner. The food was well prepared and had a wonderful flavor and the price was quite reasonable. We will definitely go back for their dinner plus will try the buffet during the week days. Pros: good food and service more

Overpriced and bland 2/8/2008

Went on a Thursday afternoon for the buffet. There was no indication anywhere of the price, which ended up being a little over $20 for 2. There was a fairly limited selection of poorly seasoned, unimaginative food. It was bland, even for a western palate, bring on the spice!!! I will not be going back. Pros: Easy to get a table Cons: overpriced, underseasoned, poorly executed cooking more

Worst Food ever eaten 2/4/2008

Our friends from DC were visiting us, and we wanted them to have a nice authentic South Indian food. I had heard about quality food being served at this restaurant, so after a whole day of fun we visited the restaurant on a Saturday evening. There was about 20-25 min wait before we could get in, and once seated the waiter was gone. He came back after 10 min and took our order and we asked him to make the food little spicy.\r To our amazement we found that all the food was sprinkled with red chili powder and black pepper. The food was so horrible that we had to argue with the waiter, but he responded that the spicy food is like this. That was a horrible experience. I think that the food is already been prepared and kept and they just warm it up and bring it out to the customers and if someone asks for little bit change in the main course they just add something on the top and bring it out. I wont recommend anybody going there. The food was horrible as was their service. The price was also too much comparing to all other cuisines around the area. Pros: There are none Cons: Everything more

Vegan/Vegetarian Indian Food! No Goat! 8/31/2007

All vegetarian restaurant, not everything is vegan, but there are no eggs used, only dairy.\r \r Excellent buffet on Sunday morning/afternoon. Dishes are well marked. The waiters will know what on the menu is vegan if you ask.\r Pros: Vegetarian/Vegan Options more

Fantastic Indian food! 7/24/2007

My friends and I went to this resaturant on a late Saturday afternoon and it was fantastic! I'm not sure why other people are complaining about the service, but the entire staff was so friendly and extremely attentive to our table. Our appetizers and entrees came out very quickly and the wait staff was quick to refill water and take away any empty plates. When we were there, there were several groups of Indian people, so that there tells you the food is going to be great. The owner also stopped by our table and had a chat with us. We loved this restaurant and can't wait to go back! It's definitely worth the drive from Carrboro. Pros: The food and service. Cons: Better sign from the road, as it's a bit tucked away in a strip plaza more

Best Udipi Restaurant so far. The buffet is excellent and service good 7/4/2007

We visited the restaurant and we pleasantly surprised by the ambiance. The service was friendly and courteous. We had a buffet and the selection of food was great. Best of all, the food is priced quite well. I would highly recommend this place to others..... more

Very Expensive and freezer vegetarian food, Bad Customer Service 6/18/2007

It is too pricey for very poor quality and ordinary food. The lunch Buffet they do not hesitate to serve same thing for Dinner plate in the evening (YES this true if u do not believe me test it). Lot of stuff like Sambar, Chutney and Vegetable entrees are prepared and kept for 4-5 days in the freezer/refrigerator. All they do is reheat and serve. I am seeing this place for last 2 years their prices have increased so much becuase they do not have much competition in this area for south indian food. They have very Bad customer service. They do not refill the water in time until you interrupt and ask them. They have very less manpower to serve all the tables.\r \r Cons: Expensive, Not a fresh food , Poor customer service more

This play is good for you.\r \r I never go here if it is not Buffet. wast of money if you are going Alacarte.\r Thsa place charges like $10( week day , with tip) and $15( week end) for a buffet.\r \r For god sake this is vegetarian food ? how much does 1 pound of any vegetable cost ( max $4/lb)\r how huge are the profit margin ???\r \r he even charges more when it is easter ? good friday ( day to fast ) ? long week ends ?
