What a horrible experience. I will NEVER go back to Udipi. These guys need to learn some serious lessons on how to behave. more

Good vegetarian and vegan food 2/17/2008

A good choice for South Indian food in Columbus, or for anyone with dietary restrictions. The staff is friendly and knowledgable about all the dishes. The buffet is large and a good sampling of their menu. They do hold back on the spices a bit more than I'd like, and I couldn't find any real heat in anything. None the less, you will fill up here, and you won't break the bank doing it. Pros: Large buffet, friendly staff Cons: Slightly bland compared to other South Indian food more

Great vegetarian/vegan option in Columbus 9/22/2006

Udipi Cafe was a wonderful surprise. As a vegetarian and a vegan staying at the Columbus Marriott North with no car, we thought we would go hungry - but happily were wrong. It is less than 3 miles away from the hotel, a quick ride on the hotel's shuttle service. The food is quite good, the service is great and the staff understands what the word ""vegan"" means. The prices are reasonable and the restaurant is full of local Indian customers, always a good sign. Closed Tuesdays. The only negative was that the Uthappam we ordered had a lot of undercooked onions, so you may wish to keep this in mind and order accordingly. We will definitely return the next time we visit Columbus! Pros: Vegan food in Columbus! more

Good food, but know what you want 4/22/2006

A co-worker recommended Udipi. I ordered the Rasam soup and a dish that consisted of two large rice and lental crepes with a vegetable side. My wife ordered a folded over crepe with potatoe and onion filling. A sweet yogurt dip and a thicker verison of the Rasam soup came as sides. We both enjoyed the food. We snagged a takeout menu so we could look up the dishes on the internet. We dined during dinner hours so there was no buffet. A buffet would have solved the issue with not knowning what we were going to get. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is vegetarian and has a basic knowledge of indian food. The booth seating was a bit tight. Table seating was available but seemed to be for parties greater than 4. Pros: Great Vegy food, Quiet, relaxing, Moderate prices Cons: Tight booth seating, Service only adequate more

don't expect tandoori 5/25/2005

5/25/05 lunch buffet. This was my 1st experience with southern indian food. I usually eat northern indian food (tandoori) such as chicken tikka masala. Southern indian food is vegetarian, and the sauces are thinner. The best part was the ""doza"" bread. The bread is more like a paper thin crepe, with a mashed potato filling, rolled over. We enjoyed the lemon rice, which soaked up the wonderful eggplant tomato side, and the chick pea dish. Soups were good. There were many breads on the buffet which I did not care for, including a wheat farina, bland pancakes, a bland lentil doughnut, a biscuit looking item, and some wheat cracker bread. We finished our meal with indian tea mixed with milk, cardamom and ginger, which could use more spice. Overall, good. However I would have liked to see less bread items and more saucy vegetarian dishes added to the buffet. Pros: saucy vegetarian dish Cons: too many bread items more

Very good food 3/9/2005

These days, there are many Indian restaurants in Columbus most of which lack good food. Udipi is a refreshing change from the typical Indian food, being the only one of its kind in Columbus to offer South Indian food. It is not an Indian fast food version of McDonald's, it far exceeds McDonald's any day! It definately has great prices for the amount of food you get. If anyone thinks that Udipi is expensive, they must be very cheap when it comes to their pocketbooks! Pros: Good food, prices, home cookin style Cons: Atmosphere, far drive, dull service more

Fantastic & well worth the drive 1/5/2005

Udipi is by NO means expensive. Don't let that other reviewer fool you - it is quite an inexpensive meal and well worth the drive from any part of town. ( I'm coming from UA, so it's a bit of a hike.) This is my favourite Indian restaurant in town. Nothing comes close to it and, as a vegetarian - it is so fantastic to walk into this place, look at the menu and know I can eat anything from it. No ordering a chicken salad without the chicken or anything! HA HA HA The atmosphere is lacking, but the emphasis is less on the atmosphere than the food. Not to mention, the place is always packed. It is definately worth a trip if you have not yet been! Pros: inexpensive, great food, large selection more

Best South Indian Food 12/28/2004

I am Indian, although not south indian. Nevertheless, I really enjoy the food at Udipi - great dosa in particular. I have never had to wait for a table and the food is always cheap, hot, fast, and tasty. The location is a little far from me in UA but I really cannot complain. Pros: Easy parking, great food, Cheap more

FANTASTIC 5/20/2004

I LOVE THIS PLACE. Best food at great prices. The food is very tasty and offers a lot of variety. I go there a lot and I have ordered pretty much everything on the menu which I find to be fantastic. The cons of this place are the service which is too slow and indifferent. The decor also needs work which is boring. Pros: Great Food, Great Price, Great Selection more

Best South Indian Food Around! 10/15/2003

In Ohio especially it is very hard to find good south indian food, and udipi has it. Even compared with south indian food in places like Chicago, and D.C Udipi Palace holds its own. I don't know what to make of the reviewer that says Udipi is expensive, I beg you to tell me where I can find as good food for cheaper prices. Pros: Good Food, Large Quanities, Easy Parking Cons: Lassi's are pricy, Ambience needs work., Buffet needs choices more

Yum! 10/7/2003

Yummy vegetarian food right on 161. Astonishingly large breads! You won't believe your eyes at how tall they are puffed up. more

Good South Indian 2/6/2003

Good South Indian Vegetarian. Prompt and polite service. Not too spicey or too bland. more

Great, cheap Indian food 12/29/2002

Don't believe the other review -- Udipi Cafe is very inexpensive for the food. I've been twice with friends, and every time we've had more food than we could handle for very little money. We're all looking forward to going back for the New Year's Eve buffet. For poor college students, it's easily one of the best values in town. Pros: Cheap, Vegetarian Cons: Poor decor, Lots of kids -- noisy more

Can do better 11/8/2002

Good food. But I'm put off with the prices on the menu. The food at Udipi is the McDonalds of Indian food!.. It is very cheap, simple and inexpensive..there is no need to charge such outrageous prices. Another case of Indian marketing gone wrong! Pros: good buffet, Consistent, South Indian Cons: Too expensive more
