Please disregard any whiny reviews. If you want a megaplex experience, then go there. If you want a independent, local theatre feel, the come here. Fresh popcorn, small seats, antiquated projector, all come standard. Don't see special-effect heavy movies here, like Avatar. But everything else looks fine. Also, the Tuesday/Thursday night ticket special special is well worth it. more

No stars. Dirty, tiny theater with uncomfortable seats. true story. At 6:45pm we bought tickets to the 7:15pm showingof Social Network. The woman taking tickets told us we were to early and we could not wait anywhere in the moviehouse. Even though it was cold (Sat Nov 6) we went outside, 10 feet from the ticket taker&where she could CLEARLY see us. At 6:55pm when no one else was asked to wait outside, we asked if we could go in. She said yes, and Surprise! There were 12 ppe already seated?? I spoke to a manager, ""Mel"" about it and she had no explanation and could not have cared less. But it gets better. At 7:25 when the movie (the trailers) had not started, some guy comes out and makes a pissy announcement that we all need to breathe deply, chiding us for not caring about a 10-15 min wait. Ok, they play some cool flicks. And yes, I can get over the sticky floors and disgusting crumbling staircases, tiny broken seats. But the cram crunch when one movie gets out and the next is trying to start makes everything crazy. People getting trampled. Next movie starting late. Everyone sweating ontop of each other. Ok kinda fun New York. And I'm gonna be going again, no doubt, because of the great indy movies. But put a little cash into renovation. Maybe just a decent-sized exit? Cobble Hill- One bad experience after the next. First, the theater is very small and overcrowded. The power has gone out during a film on more than one occasion. With so many nicer theaters in the neighborhood why pay $12 for a 3-D film in a theater with uncomfortable seating that is so close to the screen? Since its local, it sells out on new films very easily and you are left standing in line if you don't book ahead. Our last experience really took the cake. We ordered our tickets hours in advance for a new release (a $4 charge). When I went to pick them up they were ""not there"". The manager refused to solve the problem. When I protested her handling of the situation, she became angry, and cursed at me on multiple occasions. You would expect that is what I should have been doing! To add insult to injury this 45 minute episode lead to a $35 ticket. I wrote to the owner and told him of what had happened. He was relatively unsympathetic (even a bit snotty) but after twisting his arm a bit he offered passes to make up for the film. Though I vowed never to return, I do try and support local businesses, so I gave them another chance. Guess what? When I tried to the tickets for a comparable film, they turned us away. The owner was called and he said he did not remember us and we could not remember if the first tickets were for a 3-D film. BAM, here I come. I have been there today and spend $30 to see Avatar with my 2 kids. Then i am going to the counter and asking for the best deal on pop's and coke. ( one paper bag of pop's for $5.50 is already expensive, for the people who don't know how much mark up they make on this; it is sold about 30 times the gross price, plus a $4.00 extra on the glass of coke, wich is about the same mark up as the pop's, it is over & over & over priced ) so i did not purchase any thing.\r I go out to the deli next door to buy a bottle of water and 3 boxes of gummy bears. ( $4.10 )\r When i wanted to go back inside and watch the show with my children that F*#@(?! guy at the door tells me, you can not take the gummy bears inside, just the water!!! when i was trying to get back inside and rejoin my kids that same A#@*hole shot a terribly loud scream at me, telling me No, you only can take the water.\r Let me tell you, if we where in france, were i am from, i would have punch the guys and blew his nose away, like the good old time. I am 42 years old, and no way this F*#@(?! I just came back from a screening of Where the Wild Things Are. Theater #4. My first impression was that the screen was small and tell. And, indeed, we had to lift our heads through the whole movie. What were they thinking? What was really unbearable though was the the projected picture was too big for their screen. The picture was significantly cut at the top and sides. It was horrible. Even the titles were cut at the sides. It was worse than any amateur high-school screening I've seen. Worst cinema experience I ever had. That's not a way to watch a movie - Stay away until they fix their equipment. Pros: Close to my apt. Cons: uncomfortable seats, picture cut off significantly. more

This cinema always offers great movies and is in a great location. Loads to do in the area before or after the film. The audience is generally quiet and respectful. The prices are better than in Manhattan. more

Theatre is a quaint little local place, tucked away off of Smith Street near the F/G train. The tickets are significantly cheaper than the rest of NYC, people that work here are nice. Who could ask for more? I've been here countless times and I can't remember having any negative experience. I'd even call it a romantic spot for dinner & a movie. Yes, it's a bit antiquated, and no, it doesn't have the most comfortable seats, but this theater has one thing I haven't found within a five-mile radius: QUIET PATRONS. In 13 years, I've never had a leave a movie (or even been annoyed) because of noisy, rude patrons. Unlike at the Court Street 12, moviegoers here don't need to have a running conversation with the movie characters or advise the characters what their next move should be. If you're sensitive to the fact that you can't behave in a movie theater the same way you do in your own living room while watching a movie, then this is the theater for you! i rented this theater for an event and it was a technical nightmare from the very start. the equipment is antiquated and not taken care of, the projectionists work in an unsafe environment (i.e. exposed wires), the sound system is old and the entire theater needs to be rewired completely, the management is rude and unwilling to accommodate very basic requests. do not rent this theater. more

This is a basic nofrills movie house however the neighbors and fellow movie goers are fine adn the management is helpful and cares. They have set up special screenings just for my school as the printed time was incorrect and it would conflict withour buses. have been going to this theatre a long time and have seen it from the crappy seats to all new seats in every auditorium. sound is great and the movies they play are always the ones i want to see.. try the popcorn, definately the best in the city.. Tues and Thurs is $6 for everyone all day. HUGE deal.. a negative is that u have to wait outside before the movie is ready since they don't have a lobby for people to wait in. i just show up 15 minutes before show time and usually get let right in.. Having moved to Brooklyn from LA 6 years ago, one of the experiences I missed about L.A. were the small cinema's not connected to the ""corporate movie experience"". I love the ""in town"" experience of seeing local neighbors at the movies, fresh popcorn, and a total amiable experience. I never thought I could replicate the feeling of the Vista Theater in the Los Feliz district of L.A. until I took in a couple of features at the Cobble Hill Theater. The seats are a bit old, but the sound system is great...but the best part they attract a very mixed but great audience, chock full of people who don't chatter and use cell phones during the feature. After the movie, there are a ton of small cafes and delis to enjoy a little after movie convo. I highly recommend this theater to those who enjoya night out at the movies. This theater may not have the biggest screens, the most comfortable seats, or the best sound system, but compared to the abomination down the street is it a most welcome alternative. The screens are small and the seats are worn, but the fellow moviegoers are nice and the movie selections are always good. You get the impression that there is a live person in charge here actually cares about the place and makes a decision about which movie to play. I must admit that I don't choose Cobble Hill Cinema for movies made for sweeping cinematography and sound effects. But for movies that don't rely on technological prowess, this place is wonderful.
