Fabulous Italian Food, and Fabulous Italian Hospitality 5/19/2010

Excellent food, excellent wine list - this is coming from someone who IS Italian. Great Trattoria pricing (ie, this is not a cafeteria, nor is it a fine dining establishment, but it is well priced for what it is - a standout in a neighbourhood of great Italian food). Also - the nicest, most genuine people you will ever meet - a member of our party left her handbag in a taxi and there was nothing they could not do to help - phoning taxi companies, offering free drinks, etc. This is genuine Italian hospitality, and delicious food - everything was excellent, but the pastas really stand out! Pros: Food, Service Cons: Crowded more

Here' top pasta restaurant in SF? yes if you're NOT Gourmet ! and you need to order 1 food per person ! 11/3/2008

my first SF, we found this restaurant as SF top pasta restaurant voted on San Francisco Chronicle in a guide book at Hilton Hotel room. trip=eat yammy food !!! we were really looking forward to eat super tasty pasta. I'm really picky for food, first bite is everything to me. we sit down and order drink... ask recommended pasta to waiter, as his recommend I ordered "Tortellini Boscaiola", and tried to share with my husband because I'm very small apatite, BUT he requested to order 1 entree per person !!! YES each person have to order food in this restaurant. there's no sign to notice about it in front of door and write about it small in menu. we didn't mind to order 2 plates, but this restaurant policy made us really feel bad. more

Great gnocci & sausage ravioli 9/5/2008

My Italian-American boyfriend & I went here on a whim one afternoon for a late lunch because Cafe Sport wasn't open yet. We were drawn in by the atmosphere, a glance at the menu & available sidewalk seating. I don't usually just walk in to a place like this, but we were pleasantly surprised. Started with the calamari. The marinara sauce was delectably spiced, the calamar lightly breaded, not greasy. We ordered the gnocci with gorgonzola cream sauce (me) & the sausage-stuffed raviolis with mushroom sauce (my bf). Both pastas came with a salad starter. Once we realized that the salad mixta was not dressed (a bit odd), added our own balsamic vinegar & olive oil, & lots of salt & pepper, it was quite nice. We also had bread to dip in the BV and EVOO. Pros: raviolis, gnocci, service, atmosphere Cons: bread more

take away the italian flag from this restaurant 8/22/2008

I am italian from Siena and i write for an important italian news paper called "Il Messaggero"di Roma,i use to go in the restaurants or wine bars to see how those people in the foreing countries use to lie about the italian kitchen and the mediterranean diet, well i have never seen in my life a restaurant worst then this trattoria pinocchio, from when we have came in on the 15 of august for lunch at 12,30 and the owner was sleepping on the chair outside the patio for the pasta prepared before and then just boiled again few minutes after our order and the little ants walking under our table, closer the door ,and don't forget the wines italian unkown labels at too hight or too low temperature, don't ask me about the bread, and to finish when the owner has realized that we were from italy he has said that we can also pay by cash and lower price,is this waht you can give to your citizen for italian restaurant? Pros: a lot of italian better restaurants Cons: a lot of mess! more

Terrible Food. Only went for Peroni on Tap. Good People Watching. 8/17/2008

First off, the food. Terrible. Typical NYC / SF Little Italy Tourist Trap. Don't go here for food. It is only Italian by name and by the host / wait staff that either are Italian or do a fine job pretending to be Italian. Pros: Good Peroni, People Watching. Cons: Food, Prices more

Italian staples executed perfectly 7/7/2008

Even though this place can be tourist filled, that shouldn't take anything away from the fact that the atmosphere is great, it's clean, and the food is satisfying and delicious. I came here with the family and had a huge bowl of spaghetti puttanesca, which had the anchovy flavor I was looking for, and the service was extremely proactive. About a year later I was here during the evening on a date, and the ambiance was great: we were seated inside by the front window which overlooked columbus, candles on the table and everything. The server was italian and charming and the food (we both had ravioli) was rich and savory. I plan on taking my next group of tourist friends here. Pros: Ambiance, window seating more

so so at best 6/13/2008

Sat inside as it was too cold to sit out. Had Caesar's salad to start. It was good but not outstanding. Had linguine with clams and mussels, asked them to make it with spaghetti rather than linguine. My wife had the Osso Bucco. Pros: location, service except for the spaghetti screw up Cons: roping you in off the street, more

Cute restaurant 4/27/2008

My girlfriend and I went to this restaurant and fell in love. Its a cute little place with an authentic italian feel to it. Most employees there are italian even our server who also could not understand our order but it was more amusing than bothersome. We conversed with the manager who came to make sure we got the drink we wanted. The cooks sing to themselves as they prepare the food, which is AWSOME by the way. I had chicken parmesan which was very moist and delicious while my girlfriend had the gnocci, which she said was tasty as well. The drinks were interesting and they also served us a complementary drink at the end. The bill came to around $50 and it was well worth it. Pros: Good food more

bland food, bland atmosphere, just boring 12/21/2007

My nose grew as we ate! 9/7/2007

As a NYC foodie and first time SF visitor (see my Boulevard and Gary Danko reviews), my girlfiend and I wanted to hang out on Columbus in North Beach one night and have a good Italian meal. We shouldn't have chosen Pinocchio's. From the very beginning, when the server couldn't understand the cocktail I wanted, a Scotch Manhattan! (I eventually had to get up and go talk to the bartender myself - a first!) - to the appetizer, a passable, bland Clams & Mussels, to the entrees - a dry tasteless Spaghetti Bolognese and a flavorless Chicken Limone - this place certainly put a damper on our evening. No dessert, thank you. The tab came to $64. A Waste. more

Yummy!! 8/3/2007

My boyfried took me here for my birthday a few months ago. We made reservations and were able to sit outside. It was so nice, the weather in the city that night was killer! We had carpaccio for our appitizer, cioppinio and a fresh pasta with seafood dish and a nice bottle of white wine. It was perfect. Our dessert was delicious too. The service was great and the food was mouth watering!!! I loved it!! I will be back for sure! The only thing about that area in the city is parking, that no good, but it is worth the wait! more

Good food 5/4/2007

We were able to get in with not too much of a wait on a Friday evening for outdoor dining. The service wasn't the best, but overall would rate it was good. The food was delicious. The waiter had a decent knowledge of their wines and recommended and very good bottle. With the tons of outdoor italian places in North Beach this one is up there with a few of my favs. Definitely better than Calzones across the street which has much worse service and not very good food. Will be coming back. Pros: quick seating, good dishes more

Great food with "okay" service 1/15/2007

I went to Trattoria Pinocchio a few times and the food was GREAT every time. The service could have been better, but will defintely return. Pros: Location, FOOD Cons: Parking more

Good food but not worth the while 9/22/2006

My family and I went here on a Sunday night and were seated all the way in the back by the kitchen, on the way to the bathroom. Avoid sitting here! It was loud to the point that it seemed like they were TRYING to throw around pots and pans to make noise. The bread was too dry as well. To their credit, the waitress and food runner were VERY accomadating and provided great service. We had to head out early because it was just too loud, but once I finally got to my vodka penne, it was very yummy. Still, the good food wasn't enough to make me want to go back...I can get something just as good for a cheaper price and better ambiance. Pros: Service, Good Food, Location Cons: Ambience, Noise more

I don't know ambiance but I know food 2/12/2005

The gnocci with gorgonzola sauce was excellant. My wife had linguini Palermo with red sauce shimp and scallops and black olives which was tasty but a bit salty for my taste. We had proscuitto withe melone for an appatizer. The melone was ok ;however, the proscuitto was perfect. Not slimy or stringy. The sweet aand the salt flavours blended nicely. We ate there for lunch and we shall return. Pros: good gnocci, great service Cons: hustled in more
