HORRIBLE 12/1/2010

DO NOT EAT AT TOMATILLO's unless you like raw meat and manager's that argue with customers! They served me a barely cooked picadillo meat taco. Unfortunately, I had already eatten half before I noticed...The brillant manager on duty, explained to me that the meat was not raw- that it turns pink like that when it is OVERCOOKED?!?! Seriously? Basically, not only was my food bad, but then the manager argued with me instead of just saying, she was sorry for my experience and attempt to make it better right away. I'm pretty sure she never learned that rule that the customer is right. Not until I told her I would post my experience review did she change her attitude and say that she would have a manager call me. I won't hold my breath about receiving a call. To give her a bit of credit, in the end (after I telling her I would be posting a review) she did not charge me for my dinner. Bottom line, there are waaay too many other great Mexican Restaurants in SA - why risk a repeat of my experience? I encourage you to try one of the many other Mexican restaurants nearby on Broadway instead. I'm giving the service a frown-y face rating bad rating because of this manager - The waitress was actually very good. more

Tomatillos is still my favorite 10/8/2010

My friends and I eat at Tomatillos for lunch at least once a week. The food is always good and fast. Then I come with my family at least once a month. We love the Fajitas!! We also have tried some of the new things on the menu and some specials. Sometimes we like different things to try. And the desserts are great, try the fried cookie dough, they are sooo good. I love the orhcids in the margaritas and my husband likes his big glass of draft beer. The kids have a good time, and the decorations are really neat!! more

Tomatillos --Still great 10/8/2010

My family and I had dinner at Tomatillos last week. We had not been there in a few years. But we will definitely be back. Our food was excellent, and served hot. The service was also very good, they took very good care of us. We had some of their Partida Margaritas served tableside, they were so good we had two each. We definitely recommend everyone to go to Tomatillos, especailly if you are like us and have not been there in a few years. We will be back!! more

Believe it 10/17/2009

No way, never again. I've never been to this restaurant before but visited because of a wedding dinner. We had a limited menu to pick from because of the event. We were a little late so we didn't get to eat the appetizers. The plate was okay. Maybe my expectations were a bit high but they were located on Broadway across from the Witte Museum and located near Alamo Heights. What we got for the price we paid, we could've gone to Taco Cabana and got the same amount of food, FRESH and cheaper by $6. It was weird how fast the food came out. We didn't get to eat the appetizer so when they brought me the bill, I noticed they didn't give me credit for it. The manager immediately closed her eyes and shook her head and simply said ""That's the price of the plate, sorry"". What kind of customer service is that? If she wasn't going to give me credit for the food NOT eaten that I paid for, she could've offered a coupon for a free appetizer for my next visit, a gift card for the amount of the appetizer OR offered to have them cook it for me to take to-go. Not very good customer service, would've gone to Mi Tierra's in the Market Square. Cheaper for the same food, their salsa is way better and the tostada chips don’t come from a bag, they make them fresh and waaay better customer service. On top of that, Its located in downtown San Antonio. I’m Mexican-American and do not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good food for a good price. Pros: Located on Broadway Cons: Customer Service sucked and over priced, WAY over priced more

Excellent Establishment 8/14/2009

Wow, I'm not sure what restaurant Yaxx stepped into, but it wasn't Tomatillos. I've been going to Tomatillos for several years and have never had a bad experience. The food is great, the ambience is lively, and I always have a great experience. \r \r It's convenient to my office downtown and it's one of our favorite places to go for lunch. \r \r It's a great restaurant and does get packed on the weekends, so maybe that's why yaxx found themselves waiting a bit; how loooong is lllllloooooong? I go there to take my time, be attended to, and RELAX.\r \r Overall i think this restaurant is fantastic. Don't believe everything you read, including my comments, visit Tomatillos and make your own conclusions. Pros: Close to Downtown, Great food, Great Service Cons: Nothing more

Horrible service, rude staff, disgusting food! 8/3/2009

This is the worst ""restaurant"" I've ever been in San Antonio...\r The host was so rude and didn't say Hello, Welcome or nothing... just looked at us and says ""yes""? What!? How do you say just yes!! you're supposed to say "" Hello, Welcome or something similar to greet the people!\r We had an event early this year in there... close to 40 people... and there was this lady... OMG! her name was Helen or something like that... she was rude and by the way she was looking at some of the people in our tables, she was profiling... \r Then, the food... disgusting and overpriced! and COLD!!\r It took a loooooooong time to served drinks that actually I went to the bar by myself to get us some drinks!\r I do not recommend this place! don't go there... It is actually a waste of time and money!\r First time... LAST TIME, Period!\r Too bad they called themselves ""best places in San Antonio"" Yeah right... to scare customers away!!! Pros: NOTHING! Cons: EVERYTHING! more

Best TEX-MEX in San Antonio 7/18/2009

I've come to Tomatillos on several occasions. Rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, and when I feel like eating great Tex-Mex Food! I love their margaritas, the festive atmosphere, and the great service! If you haven't been there, you're definitely missing out! Pros: 120"" Screen & Projector, Great bar, AND THE FOOD Cons: none! more

Best Mexican food I've found in SA 7/9/2009

We've lived in San Antonio for about 5 years now and have tried many of our friends' recommendations and have found ourselves to be disappointed most of the time. Tomatillos kept popping up as one to try but we'd never been there. We went for the first time the other night and found out what our friends were talking about - the food is probably the best Mexican we've had in San Antonio (and I'm picky since we're Texans), the margaritas were fantastic, and it was a great experience overall. It made enough of an impression on me that I felt I need to write a review; we've definitely found our Mexican food of choice in SA! Pros: incredible margaritas, great food, atmosphere more

Great restaurant 5/27/2009

I like their new menu! Tacos al Pastor and Tacos Albanil are my new favorites! Wash it all down with a margarita or a tomaccino! Pros: Margaritas, Food, Atmosphere more

1st time there, last time ever!!! 4/27/2009

We went to eat there for our parents 40th anniversary and it was horrible! It took the waitress about an hour to come take our order, the salsa for the chips was nothing but crushed tomatoes and water. It didn't have a taste at all, I asked the waitress for another salsa it took them another hour to bring that and it looked like Chili, like Wendy's chili, that was SUPER SUPER HOT!! The food wasn't all that and to top it off I was sick the next day. When they brought the cake for my parents they were just like here you go and walked away, no singing or anything. I wouldn't recommend this restaurants to any of my friends. It was overpriced and the service was very very slow... The only thing Mexican was the Margaritas. That's all! Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

What is this? 3/29/2008

This used to be one of my favorite places. My family and I ate there last night. My wife said her tea had a hint of sour milk flavor. I tried it and indeed it tasted funky. She ordered the Sonora Plate and I ordered the Tres Colores Enchiladas. My wife wondered why her enchilada tasted like fish, because she thought the menu said it was a chicken enchilada. I tried her enchilada and it tasted exactly like canned tuna. A blindfolded person would not have been able to tell the difference between tuna and what was in that enchilada. To be sure she didn't misread the menu, I grabbed one and yes it was ""supposed"" to be chicken. I am unaware of any mexican spices which impart fish flavor. On the bright side, the chicken enchilada which came with my plate only had a slight fishy flavor. In addition, the waiter provided decent service. Won't be going back. more

GREAT chips and salsa! 1/14/2008

I have only eaten there twice but will definitely go back. I LOVE their salsa and tortillas taste homemade. Their sopapillas are wonderful! The only thing I would say they could improve on is the service. Their staff does not appear to be very friendly. The hostess we have had both times didn't smile and there was some manager with blonde hair that looked uncomfortable because she was walking REALLY funny in shoes that were obviously too high for her. She did not smile- probably because she couldn't walk in those shoes and her feet were killing her- and did not appear to be friendly. The waiters could have been a bit more attentive. We waited quite awhile before they refilled our drinks and came to check on us to make sure we didn't need anything. \r The food WAS great! The atmosphere is GREAT and we will go back but I would like to see an improvement on the staff and service. Pros: Food, atmosphere, authenticity Cons: service, restrooms too small for size of restaurant, staff seems unfrlendly more

fun innovated tex mex! 12/26/2007

I grew up going to Tomatillo's (hey it's been around for 20 years so they must be doing SOMETHING right) but lately they have really stepped up the quality of food and service. And plus the restaurant is so big, I can always get a table quickly. They have a really distinctive, fresh salsa that I LOVE with just the right amount of chile and cilantro, and there's some cool new stuff on the menu that I haven't really seen anywhere else. So I end up over there at least once a week for the blue corn tacos nortenos and a mercedes margarita. Pros: neat setting, central location, fun, relaxed but by no means a ""hole in the wall"" more

Mexian Food, Taco's Albanil, Queso Flameado 12/20/2007

Best Taco's Albanil and the Queso Flameado...one of the tastiest things I have eaten in a long time. Make sure you ask for the side of Queso Fresco for the Tacos and a cold Modelo and you will be set. The staff was timely and the restaurant was clean. Kid friendly. If you feel like desert go for the Fried Ice Cream or the Flan...out of this world. more

Good tex-mex 11/16/2007

We frequently go to Tomatillos because the margaritas and good and the salsa is great. The fajitas are also good. It isn't the best tex-mex I've had but the best we've found in the general Alamo Heights area. The portions are very large, consider sharing. more

good food, fast & friendly service, resonable priced. 9/24/2007

recommended by a local resident. entrance to restaurant is in parking lot in rear. good food, fast & friendly service. reasonably priced. we will be back. more

Fantastic Food! 7/17/2007

I love going to Tomatillos, this is the place that I bring all of my out of town guests to. The food is excellent, you must try the mata la mula sauce if you like it hot! The drinks are out of this world, now I know why they won the best margarita award. The service has always been very good, from being seated quickly to getting our drinks and food in a timely manner. It is nice to see the management always on the floor, either talking to the guests or if they are busy pitching in. This is someplace that you can bring the family to, or bring a date to, it adapts to either scenario. Pros: Margarita's and food, quick service more

Worst Service, Worst Food!!!!! 3/6/2007

Everyone loves it when a waiter brings their order to the table promptly, but in this case it was suspiciously prompt. As soon as the waiter had taken our order he immediately returned with the meal.\r Our order of fajitas for two seemed as though the meat had been pre-cooked and poorly placed on top of the vegetables. Obviously, since the food had came out as soon as the waiter gone back from taking out order, the vegetables were raw while the meat was going cold. It also took several attempts to gain the attention of the waiter, and even more attempts to actually get service out of him. It took a total of me asking more than 3 times to simply get some lemons for our drinks and another two for getting some corn tortillas. \r \r Overall, I would never recommend this restaurants even to my worst enemy. The food was ill prepared, the presentation was ghastly, and the service was abysmal. Cons: Everything more
