Not the best sports bar; sounds like it's a better place at night 9/10/2007

To be fair I went there to watch sports, and it sounds like there's quite some nightlife there, but I can only judge what was in front of me. There was a bar section in the front and tables in the back. The front has your regular bar TVs and I was there for football (aka soccer). Not as much as fun as Nevada Smith's, whose huge wall screen is accessible to anyone who can squeeze past the crowds. Pros: Decent overall more

fun time for casual date 7/29/2007

friendly, affordable and a little cozymantic.... great date place with very talented musicians... casual more

Best Pub in Manhattan 7/12/2007

This is one of, if not the best pub I've been to in Manhattan. The drinks are reasonably priced, the bartenders are wonderful, and the live entertainment is great quality. They even do some Bon Jovi on occassion. I have been to this pub on many occassions and several different nights during the week. It's always a great time. Highly recommended. Pros: Just about everything. Cons: Occassionally gets a little crowded. more

Friendliest New York Spot 6/27/2007

Every couple of months or so, my two girlfriends and I take a trek from where we live in Providence into Manhattan. On one particular shopping jaunt we fell into the Red Lion. We were thirsty and hungry and kind of lost. Behind the bar we found one of the nicest bartenders, George. Who not only made us the best bloody mary ever, he gave us great directions and made a resevervation for us at Mario Batalli's resturant Lupa, which is right down the block. Three months later when we returned to the city - the minute we walked in the door George remembered us. The bar itself is so relaxed. And the customers are a mix of locals and tourists. Everyone very respectful and nice. I don't frequent bars in the afternoon time as a practice. But it just felt very natural. Any-woo! The Red Lion is great place to take a breather from the city inbetween Canal Street and Soho. Ask for George. And as the past reviewer stated, try the bloody mary. Pros: Very Friendly, relaxed. Cons: Not in Providence, Rhode Island more

Ultimate Fun Pub! 1/19/2007

This is the place to catch some football (NFL & soccer) during game-time and some great live music. Famous touring musicians play here occasionally late-night, people you probably wouldn't recognize but are on tour with major acts. Last time was there was the 1st thursday in January around midnight, and we caught a really fun rock band called "Rolling Bones" (ha!). There were a ton of good lookin girls (& guys) there just looking to dance, drink and have some fun. Wound up staying until last call. One of our favorite pubs in all of NYC, no attitudes at all, a variety of friendly patrons both young + old (mostly young at that hour!), the bartender's are fantastic (Annie is wonderful) - and the pub food is very good and you get it quick and hot. If you like pubs, stop what you're doing and go right now! Pros: Friendly bartenders, great live music Cons: Can get crowded on a sat. night more

Chill and fun 12/21/2006

Went on a Thursday night with 4 girls. Everyone liked the food, it was tasty pub fare. Beers were cheap, too. The staff was friendly, and the live music was really fun! It's in a great neighborhood to start out the night at and then bar hop. more

Great Music. Good for drinks. 11/1/2006

I've only been to Red Lion for drinks.... but always have a good time. It can be a little loud when they have live music (i love to go just to hang out and have conversation...) but the music's always good, so no complaints. plus, the atmosphere is understatedly-posh. maybe even, dare i say, romantic.... :) always very nice bartenders, too. Pros: coolish ambiance; romantic vibe Cons: a little loud for conversation... more

BEST BLOODY MARY IN NEW YORK - EVER 5/19/2006

I had a mighty hangover from the night before. Walking to the groecery store in my hood I saw a sign that said: Homemade Bloody Marys with bacon bits and a Guinness head. I never even heard of bacon in a bloody mary. I went inside and there were three people at the bar already drinking the same thing. The bartender this cool dude named George filled a huge pint glass with Absolute Pepper and tomato juice. He had actual bacon, all crispy and greasy and he broke it in pieces and topped it off with the Guinness. It was unbelievable! Amazing!. I swear to God, by the end of that pint I felt like a brand new man. Honestly the best Bloody Mary I've ever had. If you need to get back on the horse Sunday mornings - George is your man! more

A great place to spend an evening with friends 4/25/2006

I went there on Tuesday night and was surprised to see it being full! Great place to listen to new awesome bands. Great value and good service. more

Best Bar on Bleeker 1/25/2006

This was the first place my friend brought to in New York after moving here from Mass. I haven't wanted to be shown any other bar in the area. This place is our regular bar and we are there at least once a week. They have the best bands, best atmosphere, and of course the best bartenders. We absolutely love Ann and George! They make the best drinks and have the best personalities that keep us wanting to come back each week. We wouldn't trade this bar for anyone else!!! George is one of the funniest bartenders we've ever met!! Thanks for all the good times so far! Love Daughter of Satan and Suzie Q Pros: Excellent Staff, Excellent bands, Excellent Service more

Best Night Out in New York 9/8/2005

If you want a great night out Red Lion is sure not to disapoint. Great Live Music everytime I have been and lets just say the crowd is HOT. The interesting thing about this venue is that it seems to appeal to all age groups everyone is there for the same reason- this place is great. The staff is super friendly and service is prompt and efficient. If you like having FUN - THIS IS THE BAR FOR YOU!!!!!!!!! Pros: Great Music, Inexpensive, Great Crowd more

best spot on bleecker 9/7/2005

As a self-proclaimed party girl..I must say the red lion is one of my favorite bars to (you guessed it) party at. The vibe is low key but very fun. Good people. Good music. Good chicken caesar salad. My out of towner friends loved it. Jack, the bartender, took great care of us. Great guy..not to mention incredibly attractive. Next time you're there..ask him to make you party juice. For a guaranteed good time in the city..the red lion never lets you down. Pros: good location, music, service Cons: can get very crowded more

Saturday morning mayhem 6/9/2005

Forget all these comments about cover bands. If you are a Brit in New York and want to watch International Rugby, this is the venue. On Sat mornings in Feb and March, by 10am this place is turning away punters willing to pay $20 to get in. Penty of screens, so no matter what corner you get squashed into, you'll see the action. If Americans want to watch 80 mins of sport with only a 5 min interval for TV commercials at half time, and played by athletes for the love of their country, not the love of their wallets, they would do well to sample the atmosphere in here. (This article might offer an explantion to the somewhat startled West Villagers & shoppers who happen to walk past at half-time, when 200 people wearing bightly coloured shirts pop outside for a smoke!) more

Good times 5/24/2005

Hey just wanted to clarify - there has been a cover charge every time I have gone to Red Lion, but only about $5. That said, the bands are great and the drinks are cheap. The crowd is a good mix, so all always feel welcome. One warning - you may have to save your conversations for in between songs, because some of the bands can get a little loud! All in all though, a great place. Pros: music, atmosphere, crowd Cons: cover charge more

Red Lion 11/1/2004

For a Wednesday night you can't ask for a better night out. The first time I went there I was on my own and I felt like I was with fiends. Not rammed out with people so great fast service and full of great looking girls. They have live bands every night. No cover charge to get in and the bad playing (Guss and the Allstars) FANTASTIC. Do yourself a favour, if you're close by go there!! Pros: Friendly staff, Great looking girls, not over pricey more

Decent Cover Bands 7/18/2004

5 dollar cover to get in on a Sat nite isn't bad for a band that was pretty strong. Played lot of U2, Floyd, some Zep. Pint were about 6 bucks. The place drew an NYU type crowd....and I guess with good reason, it's somewhat close. more

My New home Away from home 7/13/2004

I live in Chicago, but due to work, I'm in New York City two weekends out of every month. One night I fell into the Red Lion for dinner and a beer and having been going back ever since. They have live music everynight of the week till four in the morning. There's this band called the Mike Tate Band. I've heard them three or four times now. They do a cover of Cold Play's Yellow that is fantastic. The Cheesesteak sandwich is the best. And they serve Hogarten Beer. You can't ask for more. And it doesn't hurt that the girl behind the bar is a knockout. If you go in tell Ann, Jack from Chi-town send you. Pros: mixed crowd, Ann the bartender, live music Cons: , there none in Chicago more

Great Bar to Relax Eat 11/21/2003

Red Lion is probably one of my favorite places to just go, unwind, have drinks, eat, AND listen to great live music. Its an Irish Pub in the heart of the Village. The bartenders are very friendly, even the manager/owner comes out and makes sure everyone's having a good time. You can sit at the bar, or get a table and theres plenty of room, and when the weather is good, you can sit outside as well. The live music is actually a great plus. I would definitely recommend this place. Some european soccer buffs may want to come around here during the weekends, cause they also serve as a sports bar showing Man Utd games. Pros: Great Service, Great Music, Great Food more

Don't miss out 2/3/2003

I absolutely love this place. They always have great music, their live bands are up and coming artist that can bare the title stars. I regularly go to see Surrey Lane (Rock band) and to see some of their blues bands. Sorry i don't recall their names. But over all a great place to hang out with friends, drink and eat some finger food. The people that go their are the friendly type, no aristicratic types here. Pros: Live Music, Inexpensive, Original Bands Cons: Food is just okay. more
