Best

Thalassa is the best Greek restaurant in New York. Fresh amazing food followed by amazing service! Must try this restaurant!

Worst

I went to this place on a Tuesday, and it was empty (only 3 or 4 tables), so ambience was kind of cold. I sat at the bar to wait for my friend and asked fo a glass of Chardonnay. ...

Fresh Fish 4/23/2003

The fish is some of the freshest you will find in NYC. The quality and variety is comparable to (and possibly better than) what you find at Oceana, Fresh, RM, Milos or Esca. The staff is very knowledgeable about the different tastes of the fish and helpful in guiding you to the winners. The octopus appetizer, soft-shell crab special and lethrini were all standouts. The bi-level space is inviting and warm. The wine list is somewhat eccentric and the desserts could use some help - although the Valhrona chocolate crepes were outstanding. You will have a great meal but you will pay a steep price for it. Pros: Fresh ingredients, Inviting room/decor, Knowledgeable staff Cons: Expensive, Weak desserts more

Nice new addition to Tribeca 4/7/2003

Nice new space downtown, Thalassa is the latest of several very good Grek seafood restaurants in the city. All of them are overpriced, but as long as the fish is super fresh, it's fine to pay up. At Thalassa, that was indeed the case. I went shortly after it opened, expecting teething problems, but the service was efficient, friendly and informative. The food was great, especially the appetizers (calamari and octopus). Recommended entrees were also very good - basically get whatever is the freshest. Wine list is all Greek, and the waiter was not that knowledgeable, so that part was a bit of a shot in the dark, but overall, a good experience. Pros: fresh ingredients, ambience, good experience Cons: a bit expensive, lack of wine choices more

Greek is getting better... 3/13/2003

Had a birthday dinner here. We ordered the barbounia and the octopus. The barbounia dissappointed the most. They came lightly breaded and (I assume) fried, but without that lovely crispiness that you get in the islands. They were a bit soggy. The octopus had an amazing flavor (and we are aficionados). Again, though, it lacked a certain resiliency, a toothiness. The other fish (dorado, sole, etc..) is excellent and on par with Milos for freshness and flavor. My mother's lamb shank was impeccable. The salads were nice as well. We drank some lovely retsina. The decor is nice, airy and the room noise is low. The service, youthful...some non-greeks ...pleasant... Pros: room, fish, wine Cons: price, soggy barbounia more

Best Greek Food out of Greece 2/23/2003

I am an American living in Athens and travelled to New York especially for the opening of Thalassa. I represent the designer of the restaurant, in Greece, and was ""floored"" by the sheer beauty of the decor!!! Well Done Jean Pierre HEIM!!!! Beautiful is beyond words!!! You really got the ambience of Greece - without it looking like a ""Greek"" restaurant! The sailing boat concept is exceptional! Jean Pierre, you have outdone yourself YET again! The Makri family, who own the restaurant, are a lovely family and are wonderful hosts! Full of Cephalonian hospitality!!! Best of luck to you all! The chef, Gregory Zapantis, is a star!!! After living in Greece for 17 years, I know what REAL Greek food tastes like - this is really the BEST Greek food I have ever had outside of Greece! Well done to all involved with making Thalassa a success! Pros: Ambience, Exceptional Food, Beautifully romantic! more

Great food, awful service 2/17/2003

They forgot about us after we checked in and then our dinners were delayed for a long time for no apparent reason. Fortunately, the food was terrific - I would recommend it just for that. more

FROM the GREEKS GODS with LOVE 2/17/2003

Straight from the Greek Gods themselves- absolutely DIVINE! Thalassa, in a class of its own. This place is classy, chic, the service is warm and hospitable, and the food is outstanding. Fine dining at its best, and for the wine lovers: a splendid collection on the lower level is a must see! Pros: trendy, chic more

Amazing Find 2/14/2003

Thalassa is highly recommended. Leaves and amazing impression and definitely not what I expected when I heard that you can ""pick your own fish from the bar."" Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Diifferent Cuisine Cons: Price more

Greece in Tribeca 2/8/2003

Gourmet, Romantic, Friendly dining are the characteristics of this restaurant. The total feeling you get is if you were in Greece. There is an incredible selection of fresh fish. The staff described the fresh fish in detail. The side order of broccoli rabe with the finest feta I ever tasted. I found out that not only is the Chef also an owner but he is also partnered with a family that is in the Greek food business for a very long time. I will definately be a regular there. Pros: Grand Menu, Quality of Ingredient, Decor-Romantic Cons: Bathroom is far more

  • The Scene
White sails pulled taut overhead, honey-colored wood plank floors, a marble bar--it feels like dining aboard a beautifully restored sailboat. The lighting is flattering, the crowd somewhat serious and service generally attentive and well-meaning.

    The Food
If the decor isn't hint enough, the fresh fish packed in ice just to the left of the bar will erase any uncertainty: Seafood is the house specialty, and it's reliably fresh. Start off with feta-stuffed grilled calamari, tender, subtly sweet veal dolmas or rare scallops wrapped in shredded phyllo dough and served with a tangy caper sauce. If they've got it, order the lethrini, a delicate white fish, simply perfect when grilled and drizzled with lemon and olive oil. The hearty braised lamb shank is irresistible as well. Don't miss almond baklava for dessert.
