Thai Orchid has really great services, but i really think the food is to plain and simple... Not traditional thai food.

Best service I ever experienced! 10/21/2011

On a visit to Portland, I stumbled into this restaurant at 2.10 pm one Wednesday afternoon. The sign said they were closed between 2.30 and 4.30 pm, so I was not sure I would get to order an eat-in meal. The waitress still greeted my heartily and took my order with a smile, saying there was no need to rush. We got to talking about my recent discovery of the wonder that is Thai ice tea and where one may find it to make at home (I am from Norway where eating out is incredibly expensive). Before I was done eating she had brought out the tea leaves from the kitchen to show me what they look like. The food was good and very reasonably priced. I went back the next day for dinner and was greeted by the same waitress as the day before. She asked if I had had any luck finding the Thai tea mix. I had asked at Trader Joe's where I bought some spiced chai mix thought to be the closest they had. Once again I was treated with the outermost courtesy and was served delicious food. When I was ready to leave, the waitress came to the table and presented me with a whole bag of the Thai tea mix and refused any extra compensation for it. Long story short: Best service I ever experienced! more

pretty much thai from a can 2/21/2010

had the pad kee mao.....all broccoli nearly no chicken and what was there was dried out. no flavor no spice small portion....very. had a green curry.....again no flavor, gross over cooked goo of eggplant . so very far from what it was a year ago when i last ate there, no resemblence to thai food any more. i will stick to going to Lemongrass, even though they are not open every day i will face the wait till days they are open. still can't figure out how what i got managed to be put into my togo bag. Cons: tasteless food more

They lie about what's in the food. 8/16/2008

They put msg in the food but on the menu they say,""no msg added"". So if you wonder why the food tastes so good, that's why. more

Worst food anywhere!!! Avoid always!!!!! 2/16/2008

This ''restaurant'' is supposed to be good, but I found out that it has the most unhelpful service and bland, untasty, cruddy food. I recomend any other thai restaurant than this one. When I walked in, there was plenty of seats but a sign said to wait to be seated. I asked the lady if she would take us to our seat, and she ignored me. Finally, after 20 minutes, I got seated. Talk about lousy service!!!! Pros: Help me, will ya? Cons: Everything? more

hands down best meal(s) of my life 12/10/2007

I love Thai Orchid. They're always happy to see me, the warm goodness of their noodles warms me from my soul to my toes, they never mess up an order, their service is consistent. Nothing makes me happier after a long day to go to Thai Orchid with a book or a good friend. Pros: pad prik, pad thai, service, their curries, mmmmmm yum. Cons: parking more

Love their yellow curry and pad thai 5/6/2007

We are hooked on pad thai and yellow curry. They taste so good. Thai iced tea is also very good. They seems to do a lot of take out. The service is good and friendly. more

Long time favorite, flavorful food, nice decor, and friendly 4/22/2007

We have been to Thai Orchid for over ten years. We have never been disappointed. The food is flavorful and consistent. We usually order panang seafood (seafood in panang curry sauce), pad thai, and pad khing chicken (stir fried with ginger). We would like to order others but we are so hooked on these three items. Pros: Very flavorful, nice atmosphere, friendly Cons: Parking can be difficult to find. more

Inconsistent Quality Food and Service for high prices 4/22/2007

I feel compelled to write this less than satisfacory review after a recent experience, especially since Thai Orchid does charge premium pricing Last time we went in we ordered Rad Na which is suppossed to be prepared with eggs in the noodles while stir frying. It was incorrectly prepared with eggs in the gravy (wrong). Ate it and it was terrible. Pointed this out to the same waiter on the next visit. Waiter remembered the previous visit and also saw that it was incorrectly prepared by a new cook and said nothing at the time, neither offered to have the dish done over properly. This second visti he recommended I try it again ""to make it right"". This time it was prepared correctly but was pretty tasteless....not good enough to be a restaurant offering in my opinion. In neither case was I offered the opportunity to order a replacement entre (at no cost) or offered a credit against a future visit. Any really good restaurant (from a customer service perspective) would have made such a complimentary offer after a customer has directly expressed having a bad experience. This was truly a disappointment. Pros: Great dish to try is Pad Prik w/ Chicken - try at lunch Cons: Inconsistent quality on some dishes and staff not trained to make things right more

One of the best Thai around 4/16/2007

I have been to many Thai restaurant; Thai Orchid is definitely one of the best. I love their red curry with roast duck, Po Hang -- combination seafood dish, and Pad Thai. Pros: Good food, friendly service more

Thai Orchid is the Best 1/14/2007

I have been to many Thai restaurants; Thai Orchid is the best. I love their #86 Pad Kee Mao. It is so flavorful. Their red curry with roast duck is so good. more

Ok if you are in the area, no need to make special trip 11/6/2006

I agree with other reviewers, try a mom and pop thai place instead. The food is alright, but the SERVICE IS THE WORST. Not that they are unfriendly, they just don't check on you or refill water, or bring you the check, etc. etc. Pros: some dishes are good Cons: some dishes are not as good, service is SLOW, no parking more

Yummy 11/6/2006

This is one of the better Thai restaurants I've been to around Portland. Much better than Typhoon, although not as good as Mai Thai. I didn't experience the same bad service the other reviewers did, but I went when it was dead and the employees had nothing better to do than give us attention, although it was slow in getting our food. I would recommend this place, except that Mai Thai is pretty close and even better. more

Food is expensive, good most of the time, but unstable depends on who is the cook 8/8/2006

The food is above average among all Thai restaurant, price is very expensive, service is ok. but Orchid Corporate is very arrogant if you run into any issue Pros: Food, and waitress / waiter Cons: Arrogant Corporate more

out of food! 7/18/2006

I went to Thai Orchid for the first time about two weeks ago. The main course-- curry duck-- was nothing to rave about, but the mango sticky rice dessert was TO DIE FOR. For the past two weeks, I've been craving it like crazy. So, today I finally had time to stop in. I walked in, asked the waitress if they had the mango sticky rice. She said yes. I was seated and said that was all I wanted. Well, ten seconds later she comes back and says they don't have any afterall. NOOO! I was really disappointed, but it did say ""seasonal"" next to the rice on the menu, so I couldn't fault anyone. Instead I said I'd have an appetizer and the coconut ice cream-- ice cream first since I was starving and wanting sweets. Two minutes later she comes back and says they don't have any ice cream, either. In fact, they're all out of dessert! So I end up ordering one appetizer and a side of rice and paying $9.50 and going down the street to Walgreens and getting a candy bar. I'm very sad! (and likely will not return) Pros: it's close to my house?... mango sticky rice is amazing when it's there Cons: don't have the food listed on the menu, waitstaff doesn't know what they have more

Best Thai food ever!!! 5/9/2006

Simply stated, best thai food ever!! It was amazing, we loved it. Parking is hard to find though. Pros: great food, good service Cons: parking more

Awesome Thai Food! 10/16/2005

I didn't know what to expect in a strip mall by a Bi-Mart, but I gotta say... I LOVE THIS PLACE and everyone I refer has fallen in love also. I would highly recommend it! Great food for a great price. Pros: Price, Flavor, quantity Cons: Ambiance more

Best Thai ever! 9/22/2005

I love there spring rolls (fried and unfried) and the sweet n sour with tofu. The curries are good also. It's nice that most everything can be made with tofu if you want it like that. Thai Orchaid is one of my favorite Thai restaurants. Pros: value is good more

User review by honestlybroken 7/10/2005

Easily one of the best Thai restaurants in Portland. Try the Duck Curry, Evil Jungle Noodles or the Pad Kee Mow. Their Tom Yum and Tom Kha soups are divine! more

Wonderful!! 6/3/2005

Great vegetarian dishes! I would reccommend the Pad thai and the fried tofu appetizer. That appetizer even turned someone on to the joys of tofu. Pros: excellent food, nice waiter Cons: needs louder music, too quiet more

Pretty average food, too greasy and mushy. The wait staff, while not rude, are not at all helpful. Pros: Fairly Cheap, Good Location Cons: Not very good servic more
