Best

My husband and I love this restaurant and I am surprised about the negative reviews I read about the service because we have yet to come across an unfriendly waiter or waitress. ...

Worst

the food here is just so so, nothing to brag about. Will not come again since there are tons of other Mexican food to try out. I know Mesa Rosa definetely tastes better than Tex...

HORRIBLE MANAGEMENT 2/10/2012

Went there last saturday with some friends from San Antonio,we bragged about this place to them so they agreed to drive up 2 hrs to meet us for dinner there. Service was HORRIBLE! Spoke with the management and told her my emberrassing experience. Gives us a gift card and tells us to please come back and DON'T WRITE ANYTHING NEGATIVE ONLINE! So, we give them a chance, order fajitas to go, family size which is a pound and a half. We ordered shrimp and fajitas. I get home, only to find only 4 strips of fajita, and about a pound of shrimp! So, I call, and speak to the manager, he tells me, "that didn't happen sir", I was like, "are you calling me a liar?", his reply, " well sir, that didn't happen, you can bring your plate back and show me!" WOW, I asked for a refund, and his name, he said for me to "call the corporate office". AND THEN HUNG UP ON ME! I called back, spoke to "another manger" and he told me to come back and he'd fix the problem. COME BACK? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I politely told him I was too angry to come back, and that I know my temper, and if I come back tonight, I would be ugly, and i don't want to stoop to his level. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND AGAIN. more

Love the staff and the food! 7/22/2011

My husband and I love this restaurant and I am surprised about the negative reviews I read about the service because we have yet to come across an unfriendly waiter or waitress. We bring family and friends in often and all of them have also loved the food, drinks and atmosphere! Their texican martini and margaritas are delicious and I every meal I've had has been good enough to take the leftovers home. Try it for yourself - you won't be disappointed! more

not as good as the original..... 5/28/2011

What a difference! Food wasn't quite as good as the south Austin location- but the service was really disappointing. actually embarrassing as I had bragged about the place before we went. I'm sure that the fact that the AC had just been repaired entered into the staffs attitude....but they all kept telling us about it. We came to eat and enjoy each other's company - not to provide a therapudic outlet for the staff. Then they swiched waitpersons on us because someone from another station had requested our waiter. Had we known that the waitress that had to fill in for him would neglect us the rest of the evening we would have left then. It wasn't busy...but still took an hour and forty-five minutes to complete the slow motion disaster. We suggest take out if you must. Oh, yeah.....they told us that the manager was too busy to come over and talk to us. more

Great Margaritas! 2/3/2011

I havent had the chance to experience the food at the Texican but the margaritas are fantastic! The staff was very friendly as well! Great place for a happy hour! more

Bad beans, bad service. 10/28/2010

The refried beans tasted a bit like dirty dish water and the jalapenos tasted stale-is that even possible? They totally ruined my nachos, but I was starving and short on time so I tried to get as much off as I could and eat them anyway. I deeply regretted that later... The service was really bad, too. Our waiter said he had a bunch of parties, like that makes it ok? One positive, my friend had the tortilla soup and she said it might just be the best tortilla soup she's ever had a restaurant. more

The worst Tex-Mex 8/18/2009

The food and service was horrible. Anytime I drive by this place it brings back bad memories. more

Great Fajita's Great Mexican Martini's 7/24/2008

I have been to this restaurant 8 times in the past 12 months and love it! I have only had one experience with a slow waiter. The steak fajita's are awesome, home made tortilla's, and fried ice cream are all delicious. Finally, the Mexican Martini's are delicious and you don't get cut off after 2 of them. Pros: Strong Martini's, outdoor patio, comfy indoor booths, pleasant staff, location more

Good Service, Bad Food 1/9/2008

I read all the reviews but went to the resturant anyway. The service was very good. However the food was not. All the meat (chicken, shrimp) tasted like it was boiled. Dont want to say anthing too bad, other then I think if they just fixed their food they will be a decent resturant. more

This place is a Mexican't. 1/4/2008

So I saw this restaurant advertised on TV, and their great shrimp flautas, and had to know if it was good. So my boyfriend and I went, and was greeted by a less than enthused host staff. After we were seated, the waitress, who we will call R, finally came over to take our drink order, but just like the host staff, she had the enthusiasm of a Brit on the 4th of July. Food came, and the shrimp flautas were actually good, really greasy, but really good. My boyfriend's tamales were bland, and my beef flautas were edible to say the least. Well check time came, and our waitress, R, dropped off the ticket with an extra meal we never ordered added to the ticket. Thankfully for my boyfriend's cunning eye, he caught it, and he told her to take it off. So he and I split the ticket, and when it came to signing the credit slips I noticed that I had two different credit slips in my check folder. She had charged me for not only my meal, but another tables meal. I patiently waited to ask her about it, and she said she accidentally ran it, but voided it out. I asked her for the void slip, and she said there was no void slip. What got me, was that she didn't even bother to mention it to me, and I had to track her down myself to ask her about her error. So if you are looking for bland food, zombie like waiters/waitresses, and a host staff that are as exciting as a paper cup, then by all means visit the Texican. All I know is I wasted my hard earned money on my meal, and I guess someone else's. Pros: Shrimp Flautas are pretty good. Cons: Hosts, wait staff, and bland tamales and flautas. more

Best New Mexico style mexican food in Austin 11/30/2007

This place is an awesome place to eat, excellent mexican food period. Label it how you will, you owe it to yourself to try this place. Yeah, the atmosphere is pretty and really awesome and cool, but I mainly go to a restaurant for the food. Yes its a great place to take a date or the birfday boy or girl on your list, but go for an incredible dining experience. I have never felt compelled to write a review for a restaurant, but I want this place to prosper and stay in Austin. I grew up on authentic mexican food. My mom was from New Mexico so we had lots of dishes with green chilie and enchiladas and tamales with authentic chile colorado (red chile for you gringos). I wont tell her but their chile rellenos and sante fe enchiladas are just like momma used to make them and taste almost exactly the same. (The love she put into it aint available for sale to restaurants) So go check this place out, it'll put a smile on your face! Pros: Excellent food! Cons: Foods so good you'll tell your momma! more

Yuck, tastes like windex 8/17/2007

How on earth did this dump get so many stars? I don't know how I know what windex tastes like, but their food has to be the equivalent. The only time I haven't been able to eat Mexican food ever. Terrible! more

Very Bad Customer Service from Waitress 1/17/2007

My girlfriend and I over the last year went out to eat on average 3 times per week. We're usually pretty good with giving people the benefit of the doubt. When we experience bad service, or so-so food we will usually try them at least one more time, just to see if its the same. Anyhow, as for the Texican Cafe we have eaten there 3 times over the last couple of months. The first time was great food, and great service. The second time our waitress took 15 minutes to come take our drink order. The food was nasty, and the waitress was horrible. The third was the charm. Our server was rude and had a bad attitude. She came to our table 3 times only, 1 time for our drink order, 1 time for our food order, and the last time to bring us our check. My girlfriend and I ordered the alcoholic beverage, except I asked for a frozen one, and she got hers on the rocks . . . . . . they charged us more money for the frozen drink!!!!!!!!! Sorry, but I have to rate this place with a ZEROOOOO. Pros: 1 out of 3 times it was good Cons: BAD, BAD, BAD Service from Wait Staff and the bus boy hangs around waiting for you to leave. more

One of my favorites 4/30/2006

On first blush, one may assume this is just another cheesy Tex-mex eatery, but I assure you this place is wonderful. Being from the Rio Grande Valley, I am a Tex-Mex snob, but this place does not disappoint. The exterior is mostly tacky, but the interior is eclectic and hip with elegant lighting, stained concrete, colorful art glass, funky art, and beautiful french windows. The service is always top notch from my experiences and the food has yet to be anything other than perfect. My new addiction is the shrimp flauta, which I have ordered even twice in one week. Never overdone, the shrimp is very tastey and their salsa is excellent. I would suggest ordering a cup of salsa to go for home use. This is one of the best places to eat Tex-Mex in Austin. more

User review by cyclepoo 12/8/2005

Excellent food--love the Chili Colorado--best I've had in years. The flour tortillas are home made and VERY good. A little more than I want to spend out on a regular basis but worth it for the quality. more
