Editorial review from Citysearch 8/4/2012

I have been going to Tenshi since I move to Houston (2007-2008) from NY, and have always been very satisfied with the quality of food and service. Tonight's visit completely changed not only opinion of the food but the quality of character of who is running the business. I ordered the sashimi plate which I have previously had in the past and was shocked that not only was the redfish was beyond fishy tasting the portion size was basically cut in half from my previous plates I have had ( no bigger than a quarter and very thin). When I brought it to attention, asking what had happened, if they possibly may have changed ownership, the waiter had no answer for the change in the plate. The manger finally came out after my husband and I said that would be the proper thing to do, since it was not the waiters fault, but questioning on part of the business. She sat down and then accused us of raising our voices ( which did not happen) while we were trying to explain to her that this is not what was expected from previously having the plate before. She then goes yo say we were insulting her business, which did not happen, in fact we said the plate was pathetic in size, not the business. Then goes to tell us we should not be talking this way in front of our child! I have never felt such hatred towards someone where if my child was not there she really truly would have got a piece of my mind. Worst experience dinning ever. I would rather pay more and wait to be seated at RA! Never again, manger was completely incompetent to be running a business, and needs a 101 class on customer service. more

HORRIBLE SERVICE AND OVERPRICED FOOD 10/2/2011

Someone should go Gordon Ramsay on the owner of this place. Why would you have someone answering the phone to take orders if they do not know the first thing about the menu and severely inexperienced and lacking in customer service. My $17 dollar lunch quickly became $40 without my knowledge because between the false advertising, misleading website and ignorant server I was up-charged on several items and I still don't understand how the bill came to $40--->> LUNCH for TWO. Look at the website for yourself www.tenshisushi/Lunch.html (put the dot net before the /Lunch it wouldn't let me post without removing) and try to see how you could be under the impression you would be paying $8.50 for each lunch special. However, the website does not inform the consumer of various up-charges for every single item and the server certainly doesn't believe it is pertinent information. The best things on the plate were rice and kimchi which probably came out of a jar and I am utterly appalled at the owner's believing that their food and service is even close to good and at that they are OVER PRICED for what you are getting. If you eat at this place you might as well pay $40 for a raw egg!!! -Inexperienced management and staff -Terrible Service -Overpriced Food -False Advertisement more

Hooked 4/25/2011

I've been coming almost every Thursday for a couple of years, so I'm almost a regular. The food is great, always fresh, and the staff is very friendly. Yes, it's small, but very laid back and comfortable. A very relaxing place and highly recommended. more

Quality A+++, price-reasonable, Staff A+++, Presentation A++ 10/8/2010

I live in College Station, sushi here ok, seldom go, but every time I visit Houston I try new Sushi place. Well I have finally found mine.It is a small loction with 6 seats at bar. The menu is quite large, and inventive rolls. I always order shashimi, I asked if I could get octapus, mackeral, and bonito if they had it. Answer-That is very doable. Most sushi resturants say no substitution, or if they do a upcharge, not here. The presentation was nice. I go to take my time a relax and enjoy my fish. There were 3 regulars there, small talk, they introduced me to each other, felt very at home like I was a regular. I had to try a roll, they were so different, the chef and owner Nina, was at the bar. I asked if she had any rolls with octapus and eel that was spicy, she said no but was more than happy to make one for me. She also asked what else I likd to put on it. They wait staff was also good. I noticed the rolls had names like Joyce, special rolls are named after the customer who keep asking for the roll. Fish quality was excellent. I almost did not go because of 1 bad review, this reviewer must have thought they were at the drive in of McPuke. You do not go to sushi location for fast food. I drove 90 miles to go here and will be going next week again. Talking to owner been here 7 years, that says a lot, most resturants do not last that long in Houston. more

Awesome Sushi 8/31/2010

I have gone here with co-workers and numerous birthdays. I always had a great experience. My favorite is the yo-daa roll and the crab puffs. One of the best places in North Houston! They also have a kareoke room, great for small gatherings! more

HOUSTON""S BEST QUALITY SUSHI 8/11/2010

My family and I love sushi and we are very particular about our sushi. This restaurant is ""OUR PLACE"" and for several reasons. The sushi really is the best quality in town!!!! REALLY!!! This is the first place we stop into when we come back from a vacation because the whole family misses the food!! And the staff is VERY FRIENDLY; they take the time to get to know you. more

Great Sushi in NW Houston 7/25/2010

One word... Delightful! Cons: hard to get on the phone more

Will be back! 10/25/2009

Definitely a great restaurant with very good sushi! The service was a little slow, but once the sushi came out, it was worth the wait! The seaweed salad hit the spot; the Miso soup was excellent. We ordered the sushi & sashimi deluxe platter which had MORE than enough for two people to share. Our waitress was very helpful! We will definitely be back for more! more

Decent sushi, TERRIBLE service 1/22/2009

A coworker and I just went to Tenshi for lunch. When we arrived, there was one other table of people there (which is how it remained during our entire meal). The decor is what you would expect from a low-end restaurant, certainly not one with three $$$. Pros: parking Cons: no ambiance, terrible service more

This is a remarkably good sushi restaurant by any standard 1/21/2009

I'm a 50 year old Chicago businessman who's eaten sushi from Osaka to Tokyo to New York to San Francisco to L.A. to Miami and hundreds of towns across America. Tenshi is FIRST RATE. They didn't have everything (like Toro or Uni) on my visit, but what they had was GOOD. And today, most customers care about the maki rolls - how can somebody mix fish, spices and rice into a unique set of flavors that is both good and very attractive to the eyes. I sat at the bar for more than 2 hours and was impressed again and again by the artful rolls put together to please customers. And the pricing - is REMARKABLY CHEAP. From the saki to the fish, I was impressed at what I got and the extremely attractive pricing. By the typical standards in America, they are selling #1 food at half the normal price. I'm just a traveling businessman, so there's nothing in it for me to give a review that's ""over the top"" - except that this restaurant was. Everything, from edamame to ebi with fried fish heads to rolls was absolutely first rate and about half what I would have expected to pay. This restaurant is a remarkable gem in the Houston outskirts that deserves a lot more customers than showed up on 1/21/09 when I was there. Five stars all the way. Pros: Remarkably good food in an unexpected location Cons: Limited business means they can't stock all the fish they would like all week due to freshness issues more

Best Sushi in our area! 11/16/2008

A small, intimate sushi restaurant that is PERFECT. Husband and I love this place. Great, fresh food, wonderful service and fantastic sushi rolls. Pros: GREAT food, great service, location, pricing Cons: addictive! more

Best Sushi anywhere, great service, family friendly 2/22/2008

Tenshi is simply the best! Pros: once you go, you're hooked Cons: once you go, you're hooked! :) more

Best sushi in town 2/15/2008

I've gone to many recommended sushi places but the only place I keep going to is Tenshi. Tenshi have such wonderful employees and best managers. Mike & Nina seems to remember everyone and welcomes everyone like they've known you forever. The sushi just melts in your mouth, it's so good. I've had sushi at other places that seems to stick to your mouth, but not a Tenshi, & I try different ones every time I go there. Place is small, intimate, clean, & always has a warm feeling to it. Pros: Service, atmosphere, food, etc Cons: Not around the corner from where I live in Spring more

just not so sushi 7/8/2007

Just wouldn't recommend this place for sushi. The people are friendly, but don't really make you feel welcome like other places. The setting is not so bad even though slightly small. What I would not recommend is the actual sushi itself. The sushi there is not fresh, flavorless and if it is flavored it's a bad one. The thing that bother me the most is the smell of the place....for some reason the place definitely have a strong yucky smell. Overall I came in there and came out thinking to myself...I am not going to eat sushi for awhile. first time I felt like I could not finish all of the sushi I had ordered. Pros: nothing Cons: bad sushi and smells really bad more

great place to get sushi 4/30/2007

I go there now and then and everything been great. Adriana is a great waitress and Mike and Nina are very friendly Chef. Pros: Clean & quality Cons: kinda small more
