Tavern On The Summit

The Tavern on the Summit is one of our favorite places for special occasions. I wouldn't go there to have a hamburger just like I wouldn't go to a Mexican restaurant for Chinese cuisine. The Eggs Benedict is great, there steaks have never been disappointing. The service has been fine and it's certainly worth price for a great dinner out or, better yet, their Sunday brunch. But, hamburgers? No, Johnny Rockets is the best! And the prices are what you would expect to pay for a great hamburger! more

I was in the mood for a good burger and fries, well how can you mess up a burger.. It happened Saturday night. Not once but twice I asked for a burger without mayo and onions well the first time it was raw so i sent it back well the second time it had mayo and onions on it. So needless to say I wont be going back. more

The Tavern On The Summit is one of our favorite restaurants. I noticed zosoboy gave the impression that the chicken fingers were frozed and nothing was fresh. That is not so...The chicken dishes, especially the chicken finger plate or basket (served with their prepared from scratch honey mustard) is the best in Birmingham. It is prepared from fresh brined chicken, brined daily. NO FROZEN CHICKEN FINGERS LIKE MOST RESTAURANTS! Also, on their lunch menu (served until 4 pm) they have a Chicken Salad Club made from their fresh chicken - which again is the best in Birmingham. I normally am not a big chicken eater, but most of the time I order this dish. This is the worst value ever. Its great if you like to be ignored , spoke to in a condescending manner, and like to spend alot of money for chicken fingers frozen fries . Nothing is fresh and they even have the gale to say the cobbler is fresh but in reality its a frozen grocery store brand. The owner speaks to you as if you work for him which if you are ever employed by these people you will be treated very badly so im told. I went with a group of around 15 for dinner here. The food was good but nothing special. Our waiter confused the checks and when we asked him to correct them he became very rude so we asked to see the manager. While waiting to see the manager (it took him 10 min) another waiter who was helping to clear our table accused one of my party of trying to leave without paying. Since she had already paid Rob (rude waiter #1) and had been waiting for change for around 10 minutes we were a little upset. When Cody the manager finally arrived we had plenty to complain about. He apologized reluctantly and told us that our waiter was very good. He checked on our waiter and brought back change for three of our party. He told us that our waiter would be right back with the rest of our change. After waiting another 20 minutes we asked how much longer. Rob the waiter came back to our table and said ""What do you want?"" We asked for our change. He asked how much change we were supposed to get then walked off. The manager came back out and gave a couple of people change he wasn't sure of the exact amount of change so he estimated. They still had not brought back my debit card and another persons credit card. He said he had not seen our cards but would look. He returned 15 minutes later and said that he had looked every where and they did not have our cards. He told us to check our table and our bags to see if we had them. I told him the waiter had taken my card and I wanted it back. He promised to check agin. When he returned he assured me he had looked everywhere and that they did not have my card. He was quite short. At this point it had been well over an hour since we had asked for the check and I was very upset. I demanded my card and told him that I would not leave with out it. He came returned after another 15 minutes with our cards. He maid a big production about giving the two of us whose cards they lost our meals free. He then told me he would understand if I never came back. more

Order wine & steak, came with salad and baked potato. Quality average, ok. Problem is......NO BREAD was served with the meal. Asked manager why no bread and learned that ""complimentary bread is not provided with meals."" Inasmuch as bread IS a staple with meat and potatoes, we asked why bread was excluded and received the following answer: ""Me and my partners decided not to offer it."" Well, that certainly answered my question in full. Manager was abrupt and obviously unaware that bread IS A STAPLE with full meat and vegetable meals. The city is full of good restaurants that know this. My wife and I eat out 4 to 5 nights per week and love the many breads available at the many good restaurants. We will never eat at the Tavern again. The manager should eat out more often. Pros: Average good food. Cons: Bread not offered, manager was abrupt. more

The food is really very good. I've been told their salads are all great, but I'm not much on salad. I am big on steak, though, and Tavern's is really good. I was surprised by the fries you can order with it - they were true shoestring fries, extremely thin, and had a very good seasoning salt (though they could've stood to put a bit more on there!). The service is okay, but I usually go midafternoon on Saturdays, when they only have one or two waiters for their whole dining area, and I usually eat outside (highly recommended if it's warm/cool enough!), so I suppose it could just be me. This spot is both restaurant and piano bar. If you are looking for a moderately-priced, great place to eat...you have found it. The food is wonderful and it is a great place to take a date. The lighting is dim, and the tables are spaced for private conversation. I recommend the spinach dip and the tavern salad! Although the bar has a nice woodsy dark atmosphere-there really is nothing else to say positive about this place. Pros: conveinent, good parking Cons: bad service, terrible food, no women more
