Beautiful Theater 11/11/2005

I was quite amazed when entering the Tampa Theater. I didn't know it would be as pretty as it is. It is essentially built in an art-deco style, with Egyptian motifs throughout. If you are looking for "art house" films, this is the place to go. They regularly show interesting films that mainstream theaters wouldn't bother with. They also have a variety of other events--speakers, bands, authors, etc. A very interesting space to visit. I think they also have a "behind-the-scenes" tour on Saturdays. more

Tampa Theatre 8/19/2005

If your the type of person who likes cinema, the Tampa Theater is the place you need to go. If not, its at least worth visiting for its charm and beauty; it was built in 1926, and remains pretty unchanged with its mediterranean architecture. They don't just show movies either, musical performances are a regular occurance. more

Quaint but Uncomfortable 8/8/2005

Yes, the Tampa Theater is historic, has character, is unique, etc but the seating in the theater is just SO uncomfortable that I do not truly enjoy performances or movies there. I've attended one graduation ceremony and it was physically impossible for someone to walk by your seat while you were seated. My knees were practically touching the seat in front of me and I'm only 5'5"!! more

Great movies Great atmosphere! 8/6/2005

It is a treat for me anytime we go to Tampa Theatre. Besides great current releases, there are also a number of special events. During the summer it's great to cool off on a Sunday afternoon showing of a classic movie during their summer classic movie series. The organ is played while people are seating, there are often classic cartoon shorts, etc played at the beginning and sometimes even movie themed costume contests. They do another of these during the winter and show many classic holiday movies on the big screen, from White Christmas to A Christmas Story. They also host many special events from the Hard Music Awards to the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween. The theatre itself is beautiful with ornate decorations and a ceiling that looks like the night sky. Something for everyone! more
