very smoke filled bar. Service was excellent, however, they kept pushing drinks and wine, sort of trying to run up the bill. Atmosphere was a bit too plastic. Not a warm romant...

Never again!!! 11/5/2006

We had reservations for 8:45 pm. Had to wait atleast 30 minutes to be seated. The waiteress had to be asked twice to bring me a cold glass for my beer (beer selection was also very small as well). Had to ask for water for my date and I, after our glasses had been empty for some time. It was so loud, that we almost had to yell to talk to each other. My date wanted to order a shrimp app. because she wasn't very hungry..the waiteress informed her that the shrimp app. was only 3 shrimp($6.00) and she would rather have the shrimp entree, which was 6 shrimp. Got our bill and the shrimp entree was $25!! How can they charge $6 for 3 shrimp then turn around and charge $25 for 6??!! Doesn't make sense to me...The shrimp were over cooked and they came with about 3 teaspoons of bean salsa. I got a 24 oz ribeye. The steak was cooked properly and very tender, but I wasn't very inpressed with their $30 steak. I've had better steaks at IHOP. Dessert was the key lime pie...very good.\r My over all impression of Sullivan's is that it is a highly over rated and over priced place to eat. I guess it's nice if you want show off how much money you have and how dull your taste buds are........ more

good food, good atmosphere 8/27/2006

Went to Sullivans in July 2006 and had a great dining experience. Food was outstanding. I had always heard this was a great steakhouse, but I ventured out and tried the seafood. I had the salmon and my wife had the sea bass and it was great. Waiter was very knowledgeable of menu and wine list. I would highly recommend for any special occasion or if looking for an upscale dining experience. more

Don't go here for a romantic dinner. 7/27/2006

Just ask my long time girl friend to marry me...and she said Yes! We thought we would go to Sullivan's and have a great romantic dinner. Look into each others' eyes and recount our great life together so far.....not exactly what happened. If you want to go out for a ""romantic"" dinner, this is not the place. The food was WONDERFUL! The service could not have been better! But my fiance' and I had to basically scream to each other across the 3 foot wide little table they sat us at. It was as loud as the buffet at Golden Coral on all-you-can-eat fish stick night. I am not discouraging anyone from this restaurant, but I just don't want anyone else to spend $250.00 on dinner for two and have the same surprise we did. Next time we want romantic setting we will be going to Second Empire. Pros: Great food, great service Cons: Loud and non-romantic more

Second Best Steak Ever served by ditsy waitress 7/14/2006

Visited Sullivan's for the first time last week with visiting relatives. We really enjoyed the food and swanky decor but found the service to be the only thing lacking. Mom claimed it was the second best steak she's ever had which is high praise from her. We really enjoyed the oscar topping, bernaise sauce and creamed spinach. Unfortunately half our side dishes were forgotten and finally delivered at the end of the meal with no apology. Our waitress was very friendly but requires a refresher course on how to serve wine. I fear she was hired more for her ability to look good in a fitted outfit than actual skill, which is fine at Hooter's but at these prices I expect more. Will continue the search for a place with food this good coupled with better service. Pros: Perfectly done steaks. Cons: Clueless waitstaff. more

GREAT! 7/10/2006

Great food, great service.A lot of energy-while still getting personalized service.(YES! THE STANLEY CUP WAS THERE FOR AN HOUR AND WE ALL GOT PICTURES WITH IT!!!).A very fun night and great experience all around..I highly recommend Sullivan's ! Pros: food, service, valet Cons: none as of now more

Yummy! 7/4/2006

Great food, the best steak I've had and the garlic mashed potatos are amazing. It is expensive, so it's not somewhere I'd go often, but for a special occasion I'll be there! more

Great food, great jazz, great service! 7/1/2006

My husband and I had both been to Sullivan's in IL, but it definitely wasn't as memorable as this experience. I called on a Friday afternoon and was able to secure an 8:00 reservation for the same night. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive (hostesses could even tone it done a little) and our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and wines. We both had steaks cooked medium well, absolutely no pink center, and a side each to share. This is not a place for a quiet dinner, but can still be special and romantic. The dining room is a little loud but that's just because there's good jazz playing and people are laughing and having a good time. After dinner, we went into the bar to listen to the live jazz and had the BEST ""Georgia Peach"" martinis. They are dangerous because they taste like candy and it's easy to drink them fast. I'm looking forward to going back to Sullivan's in the near future! Pros: Location, food, service Cons: A little pricey more

Service Doesn't Match the Scene 5/12/2006

Five of us compared Ruth's Chris to Sullivan's. Our findings? Great food at both; prices on par. Sullivan's ambiance is tops. Sullivan's service is NOT! Picture this - an almost-empty restaurant at 6:30, with lots of waitstaff ready to serve. Strangely, no one looked our way for 20 minutes! Someone finally came and explained that no one was assigned to our table. It went down hill from there. No one asked if our steaks were prepared properly. The waiter reached across people to deliver meals and drinks - my colleague noted, 'even my kids know not to do that!'. We ordered grand marnier souffle and got lemon souffle - we pointed this out; no apology was offered. We walked past at least 10 employees when leaving; no ""thanks for coming"", ""goodnight"" or anything. It's a shame that a restaurant with such talented kitchen staff doesn't deliver with the same quality. Pros: Great food, Nice Ambiance, Good music Cons: Very poor service more

AMAZING DELICIOUS 3/29/2006

Best steaks around. The staff is always friendly. Go there very often. Always great. You are missing out if you do not try Sullivans Pros: FOOD, SERVICES, ATMOSPHERE more

Worth every penny! 1/17/2006

Sullivans is by far the best steakhouse. Anyone looking for a romantic dinner with your significant other has got to eat here. The steaks are outstanding. I love the filet mignon ""oscar style."" Of course now, you cannot eat just the filet. You MUST have the horseradish mashed potatoes if you even step foot in the place! Every dining experience I have with Sullivans is wonderful. The waitstaff is great and the food is superb. If your looking for that upper class, relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a great meal and service, Sullivans is for you! more

Worst experience ever!! 1/7/2006

I will never go back! My last trip to Sullivan's was worse than usual. The server forgot to bring the drinks that we had paired with our appetizers until after we were finished our first course. After waiting 20-30 minutes for those drinks we decided to get new drinks from the bar and the waitress was rude when she realized we had gotten drinks ourselves. Then for the next course she brought our wine in dirty, dried-juice(?) covered glasses and the plate that my steak was served on was messy too. Finally after we had dealt with horrible service all night, our chocolate souffle took twice the time to come out because it fell( not their fault) but tasted like eggy bread. No chocolate look, flavor or smell. When we tried to check if the souffle was correct the different server we asked was rude as well. NEVER AGAIN! more

Best I've had in Raleigh 7/1/2005

Sullivans is by far and away the best restaurant Ive eaten at here in Raleigh. The service is superb, wine selection amazing and the food from start to finish is outstanding. Every experience I have had at Sullivans has made look forward to returning. Pros: service more

Great bar! 6/12/2005

Very nice bar...excellent 30's feel...great jazz, great drinks! Can get a little smoky though! more

Not Again 2/28/2005

5 of the 8 diners, in our party, experienced problems. My filet was so salty, it had to be sent back to the kitchen. When the replacement came, it turned out to be the same steak I had sent back. Is it possible the chef ran it under the faucet, to rinse the salt off, then sent it back to me? Cons: Had great meals previ more

Not recommended 2/18/2005

Went to Sullivans with a confirmed reservation, but was unable to get a table without waiting for an hour. The personnel were unvilling to do any thing about it while they tried to convince me to stay saying that the table was ready soon. Appearantly the restaurant is highly overbooked. Don't go there. more

Decent Steak 9/1/2004

A good upscale steakhouse. I have had a few better steaks, but overall taste, texture, and cut compare favorably to a Smith and Wollensky type place. Superlative wine list, great old-style big city steak-house decor, good service. Wait staff was appropriately attentive without imposition, and the jazz trio in the too-crowded bar was OK. Thank god for the valet parking - downtown Raleigh on a Friday or Saturday means wearing hiking boots without the valets. Pros: Good Steaks, Ambiance, Service Cons: , Noisy, No Parking more

Good Food 8/28/2004

The food was great. I ordered Filet and it was cooked perfect which can be tricky when you order medium rare. The service was good and the waiter was very informative however because of that it made for a very lengthy stay. Definitely not a place to go if you are in a hurry. On the otherhand, if you have time to sit back and enjoy a nice evening out the atmosphere is great! Pros: Great steak, Romantic, Great Desert Cons: , Slow Service more

Why go anywhere else 7/16/2004

Sullivans Steakhouse is the Best dining experience in Raleigh. The staff is extremely friendly and very helpful (you feel like you are in their home). We had the New York Strip which was sooo tender, and the swordfish which had great texture and was very moist. It is a little pricey, but for the experience you get, the value is tremendous. Pros: Staff, Food, Atmosphere more

Great Experience 5/16/2004

I'm from out of town and brought my new girlfriend to Raleigh for our first romantic getaway. We sent to Sullivan's for dinner and could not have picked a better spot. The atmosphere was perfect, the service extremely friendly, and the food impressive. While Sullivan's is a bit pricier than some other restaurants, it was well worth it. I look forward to dining there again. Pros: Atmosphere, Staff more

I've had better... 4/14/2004

The only thing that place has going for it is its wait staff. My filet had so much salt and whatever on it, you could barely taste the fine flavor of the meat. The mushrooms were sauteed in a salt gravy, I could only eat one and mushrooms are my favorite. $46 for 4 drinks at the bar before dinner is uncalled for and rather offensive. I could listen into any neighboring tables conversation without trying to. Too close for comfort, and too much on my Visa at the end to make the experience enjoyable. I will never go there again if its on my bill. I will never recommend it to a friend, nor a foe. Also, do people who hang out there realize we are in Raleigh, NC, not downtown Manhattan. The Robert Gulay's of the crowd were sights for sore eyes. Pros: wait staff, wine list Cons: , food, people in the crowd more
