Wonderful Vets, Worth The Price 11/22/2011

I have been bringing all my animals here over the course of the last 16+ years - cats, a rabbit, and now a dog - and I have to say that the service has consistently been high quality. The facility is clean, the staff is professional, and they make every effort to stay up-do-date with current best veterinary medical practices. That having been said, be prepared to pay a lot. However, it's been worth the expense as my animals have received consistently great care over the years. That they also provide care for exotics, have convenient evening and weekend hours, take the time to help you make informed decisions, and have shown lots of compassion during the rough moments makes this my vet of choice. I highly recommend Dr. Shana Loomis, who has been taking care of my dog with kindness and patience over the past few years. She's been wonderful to work with, even when surgery was needed to remove a stubborn bladder stone. It was so nice to know that I was leaving my dog with someone not just competent, but caring as well. For me, that's priceless. more

Money grubbers 1/26/2011

I did not like this vet office. Rushed me in and out. Did not make me feel comfortable. Lied to me about access to certain meds. Overloaded me with information without making me feel like I understood what was happening. Overall very insensitive to patients. Clearly in it for the money. more

very expensive and not worth it 10/23/2009

This veterinary office is so close to my apartment that it's easy when by dog has a problem, but I keep swearing I'll never go back, and really won't this time. It's so expensive that I never get out of there with a bill less than $500. They always recommend tests that my dog doesn't need and guilt you into them. They've charged me $700 to have my dog's teeth cleaned- A CHIHUAHUA! I just had his teeth cleaned by a fantastic vet in L.I. for $250. Don't waste your money. Pros: close to my apartment Cons: shockingly expensive more

Scarey 5/24/2009

I was nothing but dollar signs to Dr Newmans eyes when my cat and i walked in the door. She falsely diagnosed my cat as hyperthyroid - an endocrinologist @ AMC told me to stop paying for all these lab tests and that he was not hyperthyroid and take him off tapizol. Newman ran lab work over and over and turns out had him as a canine - not feline - which i caught, prescribed meds and prescription food that contradicted one another - which i caught, ROLLED her eyes at me when I brought in my cat as an emergency because of a urinary block, he stayed there for 4 days and I had to take him elsewhere because when I got him out he was still not unblocked. At that point I finally learned this place was bad news - yes it took me a while. I later met a vet who worked there who left because he felt it was morally wrong the way customers are taken advantage of @ St Marks....Newman saw the same # of patients as he and billed 2-3x the amount. Bad news...stay away. I now go to Dr Sullivan at the cat practice - he is honest and a great vet. Pros: None I can think of beyond being in the EV Cons: Too many to list more

You've lost a customer! 3/28/2009

I adopted a cat from the Manhattan ACC. I was given a certificate which showed Clinics that offered complimentary basic exams with the adoption. There were offices listed on the back, and an additional page I was given that also listed St Mark Vet as one of these clinics. When I set up the appointment on the phone, I was very clear with the receptionist that I had this certificate. After I was ALREADY IN THE EXAM ROOM with the vet, he tells me they don't accept the certificate. Was it ok with me? No. I could have saved time and money with a simple answer from a receptionist. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. What should I do? Walk out the door, and add more stress to a 10 year old cat who has been put through Hell in the last few weeks? So, I lose 86 dollars to this shady office. I understand pet ownership comes with a responsibility and a cost, but I could have saved myself some cash had they been up front with me on the phone. So much for a good deed. I just moved to the area and considered making this my new vet - I also own two other cats. Forget it. I will not return. I urge you not to go there either. Give your business and hard-earned money to a Vet that actually cares about animal welfare. I can't even get past this issue to tell you any pros. Cons: Shady Business more

Do not recommend 9/17/2008

When I got my first dog a friend recommended St Mark's so maybe at one time they were good, but not in my experience. In retrospect (and after having found a great vet since), I actually feel preyed upon by them. Constantly ordering tests that weren?t needed (and even the good reviews admit St Marks is very expensive) - I literally could not get out of this place without a ballooning bill. Some of it was my inexperience being a novice dog owner and thinking everything they suggested was necessary, but that almost makes it worse in my opinion. Examples include a biopsy on a bump (on the suture from his neuter) my current vet said he never would have looked twice at, a heartworm test as part of a ""routine"" checkup when my dog was on medication and had tested negative on his initial visit eight months earlier(!), and his neuter. The neuter estimate was jawdropping. When I balked, they then admitted some of the services included were optional ? two different painkillers for example. I asked if one of those could possibly go the response was a guilt-inducing - ""but you wouldn't want to put your dog through pain would you?"" The catheter? What if my dog is a hemophiliac and bleeds to death before they can put one in? I finally pushed back and pared the services down (cruel dog owner that I am) but still paid over $500. Left there ever time with an uneasy feeling I'd just been swindled. more

overcharged 8/24/2008

although the satff was really nice, they over charge for everything. i looked at all the medicine they prescribed my dog online and it was a fraction of the cost. Pros: friendly staff Cons: expensive more

st. marks veterinary - thanks to the wonderful staff at st. marks vet, I am able to enjoy Mothers Day with my parakeet - BUBBA. Dr. Haddock, Dr. Kurowski and the rest of the staff are always caring and dedicated to the health and well being of the pets and their owners. They have convenient hours and the clinic is always clean - they even let you go into the exam rooms with your pet so that you can see what they are doing and keep your pet calm. I think they have outstanding service and would recommend them to every pet owner. Pros: friendly staff more

St Marks Vet Is Great 3/22/2008

I really don't believe some of these reviews. I have been going to The ST Marks Vet for 15 Years. None of the things mentioned here have ever happened to me. Dr. Haddock has never suggested any un necessary tests and is a great vet. For years my pet got her vaccinations every year and a check up. As the pet got older and some problems arised and the doctor did run some tests. Without these tests I am not sure how she could diagnose the problem. How could someone say you are not allowed into the exam room with your pet ? That is just crazy and not true Pros: Great Vet, Office is clean and modern Cons: Vet Care is expensive more

Worst possible experience 2/27/2008

We had been taking our dog to St Marks since he was a puppy. We loved the vet that was there previously and then one day about a year ago I had to take the dog there for an emergency. When we got there his vet was no longer there and we were assigned to a new doctor. I won't go into the long of it, but suffice it to say they had us pay for multiples of the same test. I was treated very rudely by the young reception guy who refused to let me take my dog if I did not pay up. I left my wallet in my car, and he simply refused to let me out. We had been going there for 8 years! So we switched to a different vet. And just last week we had a new emergency. I went back with St Marks thinking perhaps the last time was a fluke. I was left in a waiting room for almost an HOUR. WITH My infant baby. WHen I asked the receptionist about it she shot me a look and said in her most sarcastic voice - ""your appointment was at 7:30!"" It was 8:25. Pros: Conveniently located in the village Cons: Terrible experience. Even worse customer service. more

Do Not Go There! Ever!!!!!!!!! 2/2/2008

They have no knowledge, no experience, and care only about their $$$. Pros: 00000000000000 Cons: Young - No experience Vets. Only Money Counts. Can not go with pet inside for diagnose. more

Most stressful vet visit ever 1/9/2008

I used to love the vet that was once there, but this time I had a totally different experience which made my life hell. I took my cat for a regular check up. She is a very scared and nervous cat but usually does well with an experienced vet who knows how to handle her. This new vet lost her grip on my cat in the middle of examining her and my cat ended up falling off the exam table. Then, after getting some vaccinations, she apparently escaped the 3 techs working in the back room. I sat in the waiting room in tears for half an hour as they would not bring me my cat or allow me to get her even though they were done. They told me they were going to let her have a ""moment to herself"" hiding on a metal shelf before they tried to get her down, she was terrified. Then they added a ton of over priced junk to my bag and I was so anxious to get out of there I just paid and left. I will never put my cat or myself through that again. Do not go here. Cons: Terrible vet, techs, over-priced more

The doctors questioned EACH OTHER'S diagnoses 10/16/2007

I had been a loyal user of St Mark's Vet - even traveling all the way from 9th Avenue & 16th Street because one of the vets there had been so good with my mini schnauzer. However, after that particular doctor left, I brought my dog in with the same symptoms the prior doctor had tried to diagnose. I won't get into the specifics (well, why not... she'd said it could be a calcium deficiency, so crush hard boiled egg shells and feed it to my dog for direct calcium). When I'd explained this to the ""new"" doctor at St Marks, she ridiculed me, all the while wasting time trying to diagnose my dog. It was embarrassing, unnerving, expensive and ultimately they couldn't even diagnose. Finally a different vet, Heart of Chelsea, dianosed my dog. Pros: I initially liked Dr. Iglesias Cons: Ultimately, utter chaos among the doctors more

never go back to Newman Sara DVM 5/20/2007

my dog died about a month after receiving Rabies shot and regular check up from Dr. Newman. more

They're pretty much just after your money 3/3/2007

The worst vet I've ever been to - they are just after money, pushing you to do unnecessary procedures, playing on a pet owner's desire to do the best thing for their animal. I wound up paying $700 for a dental on my cat. In addition, they tried to get me to do annual vaccinations after just 8 months for a few hundred dollars more. You WILL waste your money here and put your pet through treatments it likely does not need. more

St Marks Vet saved my dog's life! 12/2/2006

I recently had to take my golden to the vet and I chose St. Marks Vet because a friend from the dog run highly recommended them to me. It turned out that my dog had eaten chicken bones from the garbage. She was in a critical situation and St. Marks Vet took her to emergency surgery and was able to fix the hole where the bone had cut through the intestines. Dr. Haddock and the staff were all very professional and compassionate and they saved my golden's life. I would highly recommend St Marks Vet. Pros: Compassionate and professional more

Wonderful vets/staff, but outrageous prices... 9/12/2006

Dr. Neuman, along with other vets and staff, provided wonderful care for my cat, who was facing serious health problems. I was always able to get last minute emergency appointments for him when necessary. The vets were great with follow up and kept me well-informed. The prices, however, were so OUTRAGEOUS! Pros: Dr. Neuman is wonderful! Very helpful staff & great with emergency appointments Cons: EXPENSIVE!!! more

Long wait and high charges for routine procedures 8/30/2006

I spend 3 hours there, and it wasn't even crowded the day of my appt. And I showed up on time. Then came the bill for tests, etc. that was almost $500. I love my cat, but this seemed excessive. Plus, I'm pretty sure they recommended unnecessary tests. Since then, I've found a talented, loving vet who charges about half what St Marks charges.\r If you have an exotic pet, perhaps it's worth it to go to St Marks, but there are skilled, loving vets all over town who don't price gouge. Pros: skilled vets Cons: long wait, high prices more

User review by clemens1 3/7/2006

Recently brought my ill cat in for a kidney infection. Dr. Kurowski diagnosed on exam with urine tests run confirming her diagnosis. My kitty is feeling much better! Definitely will be my vet now! Pros: easy to talk to , friendly more

Love the place but just too expensive! 2/16/2006

I took my dog to St. Mark Vet Hospital for her first vet visit. The waiting area was nice, office staff was friendly and the exam room was clean and comfortable for my dog. Though it cost alot, $200-$400 per visit with the medicine, shots and etc. Since I had a puppy that needed shots, and test to be done on her for the first few months. You could imagine that I had to take my puppy there 3-5 times until she got all her shots done and etc. Over all a great place for your pet. Pros: Friendly staff, Nice location, Great exam room Cons: Cost too much more
