Editorial review from Citysearch 1/31/2013

CitySearch has done a HORRIBLE job, with their ""new"" design. First of all, where is the REVIEW button? Don't see one!\r \r Anyway..............I LOVED Spring Cafe! The green beans were piping hot - hot, hot! Delicious - with onions and bacon. Real Southern style. The sweet tea was perfect - just sweet enough and the grilled chicken breast, wonderful! more

usually love these kind of places 1/12/2011

i usually love these kind of cafes but i'm sad to say this is not one of them. i went there for lunch today for a good home cooked meal, i entered and imediatly notice a strong foul smell but sat down anyway ordered country style steak and a couple of veggie. food was delivered promptly but steak was two different colors bottom grey and dark brown on top tasted so so but would have rather had dog food. what topped it all off was when i was waiting forever to pay while owner or manager stood at the register talking to a friend while i stood there with cash in hand ready to pay was the 85.5 B sanitation grade hiddin in back corner behind the register, had she not mad me stand there and wait so long while gabbing to her friend i would have never noticed it the only good thing about this experience is waitress she was fast and friendly checking on me often. but over all i give it disappointing because love these kind of places. more

Amazing Home Cooked Food!! 5/10/2010

Spring Cafe is one of my absolute favorite places to dine in Raleigh. Their food (breakfast and lunch/dinner) is exactly what I have been trying to find for the past few years since I have lived in the area. Thankfully, I have lucked out! There is nothing pretentious about the restaurant. It is low key and you could easily be stepping foot in a restaurant in any small town in NC based upon the decor and clientele. I'm actually happy to find a place like this in Raleigh as I am originally from a small town, but some people may be initially put off. However, if you are simply looking for some serious southern comfort foods, you've found the place! Pros: food, prices Cons: decor, early closing time more

Skeptical at 1st, now frequent diner 2/7/2010

When my husband and I first sat down in a booth at Spring Cafe we wanted to find an excuse to leave. We decided to stay and give it a chance. Let me just say that we left and have been back several times a week since (seriously)! We are regulars now! The reason we were skeptical at first was because the whole look of the place is very out dated, menu's look old, and employees are not thrilled to be there. That being said, people may confuse ""old"" with ""dirty"", but the place is SPOTLESS! Once we tried the food we were able to over look the flaws. Everything is made from scratch tastes just like my mom's old fashion cookin'! The chicken and dumplings, turkey deluxe sandwich, and the Ruben sandwich are my favorites. I have not tried their breakfast food yet. I would recommend this place to someone looking for delicious home cooked food. I would not recommend this place to someone who is going on a date night. :) Pros: Amazing home cooked meals! Cons: closes early on weekends more

People actually eat here? 9/25/2009

Went there once on 9/25/09. As soon as we walked in we could tell it wasn't going to be a great experience. The place didn't appear clean or well kept, table cloths torn, seating ripped, trash on floor, etc. Looked for the Wake County sanitation rating and it was a 90.0, which means the owners care very little about cleanliness for their customers. We ordered a cup of coffee and started looking at the menu, but we couldn't stop looking around at the place and it just gave us a creepy feeling. I paid for the coffee and we left. Other reviews say the food is good, but if it's not clean, you can keep it. Cons: ugh..see below more

Great breakfast location 9/22/2008

Spring is a ""Cheer's"" kind of place. Reason is they have a lot of dedicated customers that come back time after time. My wife and I go there every weekend to have breakfast. Great omelette's, wonderful home made home fries( ask them to be made crispy!) and great grits. Service is friendly. May have to wait at times. Never had to wait if get there before 9am for weekend breakfast. Inexpensive. We eat for under $15 combined easily. Pros: Quality of food, easy parking, fairly quick service Cons: Ambience, plain-jane enviroment but I don't care more

Decent home cooking type of place 6/13/2008

This is a ""home cookin"" type of place - nothing fancy but generally nice people and decent food for decent prices. Pros: Great breakfast food anytime Cons: bacon can be ""iffy"" sometimes more

Great dinner specials! 12/8/2006

This place is fantastic for lunch and dinner, great down home cooking. Specials that I'd recommend are Lasagna, Turkey Manhatten, Ground round, Smothered Chicken, and more. As for breakfast, expect crowds & long waits, the only reason I didn't give it a ""10"", also, it's a bonus to know a little Spanish or Portugeese as most of the staff are not from the USA, though they do provide exceptional service! It's a family owned place and I'm self employed & try to support other small business owners. All in all I give it a ""9.5"" one of the few remaining places you can get a true home cooked meal! I also give them a ""10+"" for catering! Pros: Great home cooked dinner specials and fast lunch & dinner service Cons: crowds & confusion & long lines for breakfast more

My grandmother might be jealous... 7/7/2002

This restaurant should not be classified as strictly ""Mexican,"" because their country breakfasts and down-home-cooked meals are about as Southern as you can get. I've been quite impressed by their culinary talents! Pros: inexpensive, good food, good service Cons: location more
