Authentic Mexican Gold Mine 1/13/2012

I discovered Sol Azteca by word of mouth. Thank God! I have continued to visit this quaint cantina at least 10 times a year. They make the best Sangria in the world. It is a blend of red wine, fresh fruit and a touch of brandy. It goes down smooth and warms you head to toe. The hand painted tile tables and antique decor on the walls is just right to set the mood. When your food comes, you can tell in the first taste just what a gold mine you have discovered. This is not fast food. All freshly made and baked in ceramic dishes. The Carne Asada is divine and the Enchiladas so delicious and delicate. The sauces are so flavorful. The salsa is hot! But it is fresh and you can see the ingredients and taste each one of them (not a soupy red dip). Thick and savory. Get ready to be awaken to a new Mexico! more

What is the big deal? Am I missing something? 8/11/2009

I had been to Sol Azteca a few years ago and wasn't that impressed then either. I decided to give it another try. The food was bland. It didn't have much taste. I ordered the Taco Frito and the Quesedilla combo. Sure the portions were plentiful and the other food items looked very colorful however the actual entree was rather dull.. I left feeling like I was missing something oh I know THE TASTE. Also for the price of a dish $12.95+ you can't split an entree with your companion. Perhaps I am looking for a more americanized taco taste if that the case then I sure won't get it at Sol Azeteca. I will not be back, two times disappointed is enough for me. Pros: nice atmosphere ,good portions Cons: The food was bland, you can't split a meal. more

Good Mexican Food at a Sit Down Restaurant 11/11/2006

This place is pretty good when it comes to the food. I recommend it if you have the money and are willing to try mexican that isn't exactly traditional mexican food. I'm not saying that the food is bad (it's definitely great to eat), but this restaurant has interesting twists on some of the plates. The one thing that threw me was the fact that the quesadilla was deep fried. It seemed more like an empanada than a quesadilla in form. It was still really good though. I liked the different style, but it just wasn't a quesadilla to me. Also, I was a little disappointed that they didn't serve any of the traditional drinks... I really wanted to have some horchata with my meal, but they don't make it. Even still, I would go back to Sol Azteca at any instant (at least if I have the money). Pros: Great Food, Ambiance Cons: Price (a bit expensive for the average college student) more

Great Food 4/2/2005

Sol Azteca has the best authentic Mexican food in the city of Boston. It really is a memorable culinary experience. I travel quite a bit for business, and it's some of the best that I've had outside of Southern California or Texas. The mole sauce is amazing. The service, at times, can be a bit spotty, but generally it is very good. They can get very busy, though, so it can be a bit hard to get in there, sometimes, especially on the weekends. The drink prices are good, and they certainly don't go light on the pour, so be prepared. I highly recommend Sol Azteca. Pros: Great Food, Great Drinks Cons: Spotty service, Can be very Busy more

Yummy but Bad Service 6/17/2004

This place has good food but the service is terrible. Every time I'm there it takes them forever to sit you down, even when its half empty. Once you sit down they don't come to the table until 15 minutes have passed by. I guess they can get away because they know people love the food. The Cadillac margaritas are really strong! Don't drink them if you need to drive. The flan is amazing, but get the regular one, not the coffee flavored one. Pros: Food, Margaritas more

You Won't Be Disappointed 3/7/2004

I have been going to Sol Azteca since it first opened (about 3 times a year). The food is authentic Mexican fare, so if you're expecting Tex-Mex Taco Bell this place is not for you. The waiters are of Mexican descent and have always been courteous to me and my friends and family. The restaurant is set up so there are waiter stations in each room. Drop a fork and the waiter will be there with a replacement before you look up. I recommend anything with a mole sauce, it is the best I've ever tasted and I've spent a lot of time in Texas. For drinks the best value is the Cadillac Margarita. If you're driving limit yourself to one. It takes about 1 hour for the entire meal (with dessert and drinks). Relax and have a good time and a great meal. Pros: Service, Food, Drinks more

It's a Must Have! 1/20/2004

This is one restaurant that I must fit in at least once a month. Everything is good! If you want authentic Mexican. this is for you........ Pros: Food, Value, Service more

poor service 8/27/2003

The food at Sol Azteca was great, but i will never be back. The service was S-L-O-W and it wasn't even crowded. There's no reason why a simple meal (no appetizers or desert) should take almost 3 hours there!! Pros: good patio, not well known, good sangria Cons: slow service, unattentive waiters more

Happy Customer 8/10/2003

We stumbled upon Sol Azteca last Friday night looking for a nice summer spot to unwind and have a decent meal, and hit the nail on the head. The service was impeccable - friendly, casual, and not overly obtrusive. The patio was perfect for the hot, muggy night, and the Sangria was divine. The chiles rellenos were delicious and VERY reasonably priced, and the shrimp in coconut milk were out of this world. This may not be the fanciest or most pretentious place in town, but the quality/ambiance/price ratio is perfect, and you will leave feeling happy and relaxed. Pros: Patio Seating, Great Service, Price more

Newton Patio Oasis 2/24/2003

Try he Newton Patio which is accessable via a little alley off the main street. The patio is cool quite dining spot with quick seating thanks to one of the best Hosts in town. The Mole is always my favorite on enchillada or whatever. I recomend the basic magaritta and extra red cabbage as your sides. Never had a bad meal in 5 years. Pros: Great Service, Yummy food, Good prices Cons: Menu never changes, city parking woes, Drooling while you wa more

BEST OF SHOW 11/11/2002

This is hands down my favorite mexican place of all time. The food is amazing, as is the sangria. I have never had a bad experience here. The most I have ever needed to wait was 10-15 minutes and the food is well worth it at either location. Pros: sangria, chips and salsa, wide range on menu Cons: parking is tricky more

Hidden Jewel 9/16/2002

This is the hidden jewel of Mexican restaurants. They don't advertise which means they don't get a lot of reviews. We've been going to both the Newton and Brookline Sol Aztecas for years and years. It's consistent and good. They DO need, however, to add a few vegetarian meals to their menu. Overall, a wonderful bet for a great meal. more

Horrible Service! 7/23/2002

My fiance and I are from Texas and have been craving Mexican food so we decided to try Sol Azteca, which we had read so many good things about on citysearch. We got there around 6pm and were seated and then had to wait a good 20 minutes for our waiter to come around (after we flagged someone down). The food was different than what I was accustomed to (Tex-Mex) so I had some questions. I started asking the waiter about some of the menu items (simple things like are your tortillas corn or flour?). He got so mad that I was asking questions and would just nod and stare off into space, he acted very snooty towards us. After we decided we needed more time to order, he got madder and just walked off grunting and shaking his head. We decided to leave and will never be back. more
